Jan-18-07 | | Eyal: <Wasn't that just a common or garden nuke?> Yes, as it turns out it's "just" a nuke. The basic device of carrying something glowing and mysterious in a case during most of the movie is very similar, though. Tarantino just goes one better by not letting us know what it is even at the end, thereby turning it into a speculation cult. |
Jan-18-07 | | Eyal: <Dom> Some chess-related issue, for a change: <anti-computer rant> Following the posts of certain anti-computer ranters in our white vs. black challenge game made me realize something I haven't completely grasped before: these people tend to equate "analysis" with the concept "computer/engine" – or, in other words, they include under the heading of "computer-play" anything related to analysis - the very moment they see concrete and detailed lines, it seems. The fact that quite a lot of analysis is made with the engine-produced lines as a base probably contributes to this confusion, but it's as if they won't ever consider going over these lines and actually make the effort to figure out the logic behind the moves. For such people, a discussion of what to play next in a game can only remain on the vague level of "I don't like our queen on this square, so let's move it to that square. We're threatening their pawn and maybe we can make some trouble for them", etc. Maybe it's a far-fetched analogy, but it reminds me a bit of how in certain lit crit circles anybody who tries to think rationally and systematically about anything is immediately tagged as "structuralist". |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Metropoli other than Dublin> You mean there are some? You might get an argument from people who don't think its worth going to <London> if you're already in the ONE TRUE , <Emerald Isle> (not England), but I'm no expert on the <Erse>. I was aware that <Erie> was it's own place southwise thanks to <Michael Collins and DeLeverra>. I think <Liam Neeson> may have helped but I'm foggy on the details. Something about <Easter>, <bloody Poms> and something <Oliver Cromwell> did a few years back? I raise a glass to <Eire>- free at last. |
Jan-18-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Great to see you drop by <Dom>
There's a <Melvillian tribute> to you a few pages back, my circumlocuitous compadre. <Caesar to Marcus Antonius> after the battle of <Gergovia>: "Never mention this battle to me again." <Jess to Eyal> after the battle of <filmtrivia>: "Never mention Herzog to me again." Heh |
Jan-18-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: PS thanks for the <Strozek> arcania, <Eyal>-- very pertinent stuff for the <Herzogophile> Dom <Ant movie> I thought this was one of <Herzog's> wierdest, like a <faux> version of <the Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith>. He seems to have forgotten about savage irony, making the film close to unwatchable. <Dwarves> documentary: Amazing, hilariious, and very respectful, full of pathos. A little like the tone of <Hauser>. <Herzog> had many sides, the <dodecahedron> of the <Not so New Now German Cinema>? OK i'll shut up now.
Cheers |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ok one more- Best lines from <Repo Man>? <Harry Dean Stanton> to <Estevez>: "No communists in this cab...
No Christians either!"
or,
<CIA operative watching all hell break loose in final sequence>: "Fudge" (fill in the blank dang these censors) I love this job!" |
Jan-18-07 | | Eyal: <Best lines from <Repo Man>?> I would add: Good evening, Otto. This is Agent Rogersz. I'm going to ask you a few questions. Since time is short and you may lie, I'm going to have to torture you. But I want you to know, it isn't personal. |
Jan-18-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: LOL giggling here. Well chosen my <filmity friend>. I thought the final sequences of the film were quite beautiful, redemptive, and <Romanticist> in a "good" way. One more line-
"Otto? What's your last name. Parts?"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
oooh just woke up I watched all the games last night. <Rad> and <topa> games were very exciting, <Svidler> blew a gasket. What the heck happened to him? |
Jan-18-07 | | Eyal: <Svidler> As the report in the official site put it, he "had a slight brain freeze"; but as the Tal memorial had already shown, he seems to be getting these freezes quite a lot lately. <Navara-Radja> I watched this game live - it was very exciting indeed, and must have been a terrible experience for Navara. Radja messed up the opening completely (he played a gambit where Navara came up with both the pawn AND the compensation...) and Navara was practically winning, until 21.e4? After that he lost his advantage, but seemed as if he was refusing to accept that and kept playing for a win, and after the atrocious 28.Rb6? collapsed immediately. |
Jan-18-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> good reprise of the <Rad> game. Can we forgive <Navarra>? One of the most exciting things to me was the time trouble he got into... Anyone who thinks live chess is not exciting is nuts. It's like watching the <Indy 500> in slow motion... |
Jan-19-07 | | Colonel Mortimer: <Anyone who thinks live chess is not exciting is nuts.> The world has gone bonkers... |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi Colonel, pleezd to meetchya |
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: <jess: Also, in terms of plot, this is how <Odysseus> escapes the <Cyclops>. He blinds the Cyclops, and he asks his other Cyclops friends for help. They ask, "Who did this to you" and he replies, "Odysseus" (Meaning 'no one').> That's the general idea, but a bit inexact. Odysseus gives Polyphemus (and Polyphemus repeats when he's blinded) a shortened nickname - not "Odysseus" but Oυτις, transcribed 'oudeís' or 'outis' (see http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bi..., line 366) - which COULD easily be misinterpreted as "Noman". But of course this lingual joke is effectively lost in translations. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> I wish you were one of my professors. Thanks for that rigorous emendation/correction to my point. |
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: I would have answered that, but I'm afraid <cg.com> would erase your post again (as in the Pope incident), and then MY post would remain again looking a bit bizarre. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Well, as a <Stalinist>, I'm all for strict censorship. BTW, have you checked out this excellent book? It's one of my favorites of all time. It's called <Stalin: the Humorous Years> Heh |
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: Did you know Stalin actually had a (supposedly) humorous periodical, aptly named "Krokodil" (crocodile)? |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> no, I didn't. Really? I wrote my <Stalin> joke for a standup comedy piece I performed several times. Have you read <krokodil>? Actually, come to think, there are many photos of <Stalin> smiling... He's still the number one mass murderer of all time? Or do we count <Mao> as well? |
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: <Have you read <krokodil>?> No, I didn't. It's rather funny, really...I figured <Stalin: the Humorous Years> was just a joke but I wasn't 100% sure, so I googled it - and that's how I got to "krokodil". From the little I've seen, though, it was very strong in antisemitic caricatures and the like. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ouch- hard to argue in favor of antiSemitic humor.
On the other hand, are you aware of <Lenny Bruce's> very famous stand up routine-- His "racist" "anti-racist" routine? If you know this joke I'll be more impressed than I am already. If not, I'll post a shortened version after I next hear from you on this topic. |
Jan-19-07 | | Boomie: <Eyal: Is there such a thing as a...> Well, to get all the jokes in here you certainly have to be a cunning linguist. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Boomie> welcome to <Dom's Pandemonium House of Arcania> (Also known as DPHA) Yes, there are some very clever folk in here with the <wordplay>, especially our host and <pun master> DomDaniel. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: LMAO <Eyal> yep that's a great one alright. Not the one I'm looking for, though... Take one more shot if you like and I'll post the joke. I've "borrowed" (stolen) the joke several times in my standup "career." It's a mortal lock to bring the house down, too. Never fails. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: BTW- Is <niger> allowed at <CG> because it's the name of a country? If so, we should form a country named the <F word> so we can use that one too... Although I loved <Dom's> "Former United Kingdom" approach... still giggling over that one |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ahhhh Friday... Why go to class when I can learn more in this forum? Plus there's chess to analyze and watch. Life during Big Matches and Tournaments is surely grand. |
