Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: <His "racist" "anti-racist" routine> Well, I give up - I can only think in this context of some "anti-religion" jokes like: <A lot of people say to me, "Why did you kill Christ?" I dunno... it was one of those parties that got out of hand, you know?> or <If Jesus had been killed twenty years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little electric chairs around their necks instead of crosses.> But that's not the kind of thing you mean, probably.

 | | jessicafischerqueen: LMAO I love <Lenny>. Ok here's the incredibly short paraphrased version... "If we all pulled together... black with white, race with race, we could really accomplish something worthwhile: Get rid of the Greeks."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH
heh |
Jan-19-07 | | Shams: jeez, read too far back on this board and a guy gets to feeling stupid. jess, where's the forum for the only mostly brainy types? |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Shams> You're already here. These are the smartest people with the most catholic interests. They'll talk about virtually everything. There is a Renaissance-like atomosphere in here. They never put anyone down or make them feel dumb, I should know. So I'm sure <only mostly brainy> types are allowed in here, though I can't speak for our venerable <master>... at least not till he gets back. Heh
Right now I'm pretending to be <Voltaire>, for example. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: So "Enlightenmented" am I, for instance, that I just imagined <Voltaire> was a Renaissance figure. I must have had a <fugue> episode, I <fuguer>. |
Jan-19-07 | | Shams: it so happens our friend here is only <mostly> brainy. there's a big difference between being <mostly> brainy, and being <all> brainy. hey, you just taught me a word! had never heard that sense of catholic before. thank you. /why can't they just allow italics? and no, I'm not looking for a coder's answer. |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Well, there may be a few <bona fide> <Papists> around, but it would be difficult to discern such an animal given the prevalence of irony in this, our online <Arcady>. |
Jan-19-07 | | Shams: jess, haven't you read Yeats?
The hills of Arcady are dead
And over is their antique joy...
/non-Catholic who reads (and dates, for that matter) mostly Catholics |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: I don't recall that <Yeats> line but I think his work is sublime. I was thinking of <Ode on a Grecian Urn> with the Arcady reference. What's a Grecian Urn?
About a buck and half an hour.
That groaner's in tribute to <Lenny Bruce> RIP. |
Jan-19-07 | | Shams: testing the eclecticism here-- this from Conan the other night (not exact): "Britney Spears in the news again. Apparently she vomited in a taxi the other night, coming home from a nightclub...yeah, she actually puked in the cab. Music critics are calling it her best release in years." |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: What people say when they see Jess walk down the hall at University: "What rough beast is this, slouching towards Bethlehem?" or something like that |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: LOL good one <Conan>. Reminds me of the Two Word review of <Spinal Tap's> record <Shark Sandwich>: "@#$% Sandwich."
Lets see if the censors let this post stay? |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: sigh
lost in the translation |
Jan-19-07 | | Shams: why did Lenny choose the Greeks, just out of curiosity? check it out-- one of my favorites. I don't care what the scholars say, I read "Chronos" as a reference to chess. http://www.kalliope.org/digt.pl?lon... |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Not sure. I've thought about that. I think because the Greeks invented Western Civilization, no one dares make up a derogatory term for them. Perhaps <Monty Python> should have been given the task. They certainly did a cracking job on the Belgians with their <Invent a Derogatory Term for the Belgians> Contest. My favorite was the second- runner up: "Let's just ignore them."
And the winning entry wasn't bad either:
"The Phlegms."
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: <And the winning entry wasn't bad either: "The Phlegms."> That wasn't the winning entry, actually. <the winner was undoubtedly from Mrs No-Supper-For-You from Norwood in Lancashire... Miserable Fat Belgian Bastards> (and a Mr St John of Huntingdon said he couldn't think of anything more derogatory than "Belgians") |
Jan-19-07 | | Eyal: And one more Lenny Bruce classic: <I won't say ours was a tough school, but we had our own coroner. We used to write essays like: What I'm going to be if I grow up.> |
Jan-19-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> do you by any chance have a copy of that record? I'm relying on memory of TV broadcasts on PBS. LOL Lenny!! Thanks for all the laughs today <Eyal>. A nap, and then getting up at 4 in the morning to see <Anand v. "The Radiator."> Heh |
Jan-20-07 | | Eyal: <Eyal: I would have answered that, but I'm afraid <cg.com> would erase your post again (as in the Pope incident), and then MY post would remain again looking a bit bizarre.> <jess> And isn't it ironic ... don't you think (as your countrywoman says) - I didn't think they would REALLY delete your post, but they HAVE, and now my post AGAIN remains without context. And they also deleted the Lenny Bruce "racist" "anti-racist" routine which I quoted! That's even more ironic, because Bruce's aim was exactly to de-mystify the kind of prudish mentality towards the use of "racist" language (and "bad language" in general), which led to this act of censorship. At least they're not so sensitive about the Belgians... <<Eyal> do you by any chance have a copy of that record? I'm relying on memory of TV broadcasts on PBS.> I'm not sure what you mean - if it's the Monty Python sketches, I do have all the "Flying Circus" shows on video, but for quotations I usually consult the transcripts in http://orangecow.org/pythonet/sketc... or http://www.ibras.dk/montypython/jus... |
Jan-20-07 | | Eyal: From the Corus page:
<Delusional Patzer: Been betting on Shirov this whole time and I'm still gonna do it! Just you wait..
I'm not giving up on ya, Alexey!>
<keypusher:
Well-meaning fan: Cheer up, Shirov! I know one guy who is still betting on you!Alexey Shirov: Oh, yeah? What's his name?
WMF: Um, it's...<Delusional Patzer>. Shirov: *Hangs self*>

Jan-20-07 | | Nibiru: I think I know why Lenny chose the Greeks. In old Greece it was widely accepted that men did 'it' with other men. (not joking) As for Monty Python: check out You Tube! |
Jan-20-07 | | Nibiru: Haha good one, Eyal! Reminds me of a joke:
Fan to famous writer: I've read your book!
Famous writer: Ah, you're the one! |
Jan-20-07 | | hitman84: <Nibiru>Another joke/fact ? Classic is a work that everybody know about but nobody read. |
Jan-20-07 | | Eyal: <hitman84> As it happens, that (approximately) was the "quote of the day" in this site a few weeks ago: <"A classic is a book, which people praise and don't read." (Mark Twain)> Alas, by that standard much of Twain's own work has achieved classic status. |
Jan-20-07 | | mojoXX: Besides Monty Python on youtube, there's a Lenny Bruce Sundance documentary that someone posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVaB...
The related links show the remaining ten parts.
Here's Dustin Hoffman from Lenny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wcoc... It's clear that Lenny Bruce was an important social critic but was he really funny? Usually the aim of a comedian is to provide a release that makes people feel happy. Lenny's style of comedy made people feel really uncomfortable because he was busy exposing our hypocrisies. |
