 | | Annie K.: <and the anti-kibitzer walks among us> Lurkers will lurk. ;p
I just got the last of Jean Auel's series (published a month ago) here yesterday, and got about 1/3 through it last night. Therefore, I too will mainly lurk for a while. And avoid any imaginary celestial vacuum cleaners. The kittehz advise me that vacuum cleaners are not cool, anywayz. So there. :) |

<Dom: <Now we must go forth and Educate the Public. It is no longer true that champion chess players are guys whose names begin with the letter 'K'. All those Kamskarov and Krapsky guys are dead babies. The new letter is 'G'.>> I sooooo picked the wrong decade to take up chess again. :'( ;) |

Harold Camping is reportedly "bewildered". Next time I'll let <Annie> and <Dom> be my canaries in the mine to know if I only have a few hours left. |

 | | Annie K.: I won't sing! :p
But I'm glad you find us useful, <Ohio>. :D I'm still an atheist, thank God. However, I <believe> I'll go and have a cup of coffee now. ;) <Dom> congrats on fixing your profile... ;) |
|
| May-22-11 | | crawfb5: One way in which I have been attempting to keep myself out of mischief has been by researching early US championship matches. In one game from the Game Collection: Showalter - Lipschutz 1892 match, Showalter played the French. A bystander asked him, <"Don't you feel ashamed to play French?"> Showalter replied, <"Yes, I do, but I can't help it."> I thought a Francophile such as yourself would appreciate the sentiment. |
|
May-22-11
 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> He couldn't help playing the French? Or he couldn't help feeling ashamed? There's a masochistic streak in all Francophiles. And wasn't Showalter's middle name 'Whipps'? Jackson Whipps Showalter? (Don't go beating yourself up, now ...) |
|
| May-22-11 | | crawfb5: <He couldn't help playing the French? Or he couldn't help feeling ashamed?> Probably both.
<There's a masochistic streak in all Francophiles. And wasn't Showalter's middle name 'Whipps'?> Yes, it was his mother's maiden name. |
|
May-23-11
 | | Domdaniel: I *think* it was Blackburne, playing an elderly gent in a simul, who groaned and jokingly said "I resign" when his opponent played the French. And the old guy held him to it. |

Oh, I tend to do as instructed. Can take years, though. |

 | | Domdaniel: <How to Lose with White ... an all-too-regular series of Chessical Adventures> [Event "Cork masters op"]
[Site "Cork"]
[Date "2011.04.02"]
[Round "3"]
[White "McCarthy, Gerry"]
[Black "Cichonski, Bartolomiew"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "E67"]
So Black is rated a few hundred points above me, went through the tournament unbeaten and was among the prizewinners, but I had him on the ropes, and he knew it... 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.d4 O-O 5.O-O d6 6.c4 Nbd7 7.Nc3 h6 (Unusual, but not bad)
8.e4 e5 9.h3 c6
(Here 9...Nh7 is normal - Black is mixing up variations, with some slight risk) 10.Be3 (10.d5 is good but I prefer not to close the centre) 10... Qe7 11.Qc2 Nh7 12.Rad1 f5 13.exf5 gxf5 14.Nh4 Qf6 click for larger view A fairly typical Fianchetto King's Indian position. Round here I began to think of exploiting the Black Nh7, by some sac or skewer. But 15.Nxf5 Qxf5 16.Be4 runs into ...Qxh3 - so I decided to lure the e-pawn forward and *then* sac a knight... 15.f4 is good, but I wanted an open d-file... 15.dxe5
(another try is 15.c5 dxc5
16.dxe5 Nxe5 17.Bxc5 Re8 18.Rfe1 Qg5 19.Qb3+ (19.f4 Qxg3 20.Qf2 Qxf2+
21.Bxf2) 19... Be6 20.Qxb7 f4 21.Ne4 Qh5)
15... dxe5 16.f4 e4 17.Nxe4 (The skewer idea again, but now White has a loose Bishop on e3) Qe6 (17... fxe4 18. Bxe4 wins)
18.Rd6?!
Missing a win due to my old reluctance to let pieces be taken with check. White can just let the Be3 go, and emerge with a huge advantage:(18.Nd6! Qxe3+ 19.Kh2 Ndf6 (19...Nhf6 20.Rfe1 Qc5 21.Nhxf5 Nb6 (21... Kh8 22.Nxg7) 22.Nxg7 Kxg7
23.Re7+) or (19... Nb6 20.c5 Nd5 (20... Qe7 21.cxb6 axb6 22.Rfe1 Be6 23.Ndxf5 Bxf5 24.Nxf5 Qf6 25.Ne7+ Kh8 (25... Kf7 26.Qc4+ Ke8 27.Ng6+ Qe5 28.Rxe5+ Bxe5 29.Qe6#) ... among other lines. Meanwhile, back in Realityland: 18... Qe8 19.Nxf5 Rxf5 20.g4 20.Rf8 21.Bd2 Nhf6 22.Ng3 Qf7?! (not best - now 23.Nf5 gives White the advantage. As should the move I played...)
23.g5
23... Ne8
Now 24.Rg6 is winning, eg 24...hxg5 25.Bc3 gxf4 26.Bxg7 Nxg7 27.Nh5...

Instead I went totally gonzo with 24.Rxc6?? and lost after 24...bxc6 25.Bxc6 Nc7, when White has nothing for the material. That's how you lose with White. Repeat often. |
|
May-25-11
 | | Annie K.: <That's how you lose with White. Repeat often.> No, don't. :)
Pardon, but was your opponent a cat? It's just that that's soooo a cat's name... well ok, the fact that "cica" means "kitty" in Hungarian may have something to do with my impressions, but really, Bartolomiew? Meow! ;p <Dom> - you know, I think it would help your game if you played more often. This game has "stress" written all over it, and practice would help lower it, significantly. Don't just play in tournaments now and then - go to the club and play unrated games more often, or even - gasp! ;) - play online. Online play is not just blitz or correspondence - you can find anything in between too. FICS is a good site, and there are many others. <craw: <One way in which I have been attempting to keep myself out of mischief [...]>> Does it work? ;) |

To the extent that it chews up time that could be misspent elsewhere, yes... :-) |

A bit of denial, perhaps? |
|
May-25-11
 | | Annie K.: <Ohio> no, it's just that <Dom> always thinks he's playing Black. :) <craw> good enough... heh. |
|
May-25-11
 | | Domdaniel: 1-0, oops, 0-1. Ms Annie, she right. I think Black.
'Play more' is good advice. Recently it's been less than 20 games per year. Any kind of games. But, hey, I found something new to do this week. It's healthy. I may be accused of speciesism here ... but I've been taking a *dog* for walks. Quite enjoyable too, once you get used to the idea that the critter isn't a cat, likes being on a leash, and doesn't think it's top of the pecking order. |
|
May-25-11
 | | Domdaniel: Playing online doesn't work for me. I need to smell the fear. |
|
May-25-11
 | | Annie K.: Perhaps you could see if some company's manufacturing a fear-scented air freshener. ;) OK, take thee to a chess club, then. You want to wear down the novelty value of playing. Of course rated tournament play will always be more stressful, but it can be made less stressful than it is when you play rarely, and every game you play is rated. :) Um, you didn't get yourself a dog, did you? ;s |
|
May-25-11
 | | Domdaniel: I reluctantly agreed to look after a spaniel for a month. All the things I thought I didn't care for in dogs ... their soulful eyes, eager wagging tails, needy willingness to volunteer ... turn out to be OK, rilly. Don't worry, I ain't gonna convert. |
