Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <Ohio> Sometimes I do *high definition*, sometimes I go for *low definition*. That one was maybe on the low side.

As we all know from hearing me yap on about them, 'false friends' or 'faux amis' are words in one language which are easily mistaken for unrelated words in another language.

I've found a rare example of a meta-false-friend ("and where did you meet this person, eh?").

The Danish word 'befriende' means 'liberating'. As in "det befriende ...e5".

Domdaniel: <mworld> Although I have *some* empathy with a mind that can leap from Germans to pedophilia without leaving Akron ... no, we're not going there.

On reflection, my mirror and I have decided to end the day in benign mode. I choose to interpret Ohio's <Wish there were more kinder kind in the world.> both literally ("I wish more people were kinder") and as a pun on the children/kinder thing, which has history round here.

And I *do* wish that people were kinda kinder, or the kinder kind. And that the younger ones, in particular, didn't seem to produce such large numbers of empathy-free conscienceless psychopaths (like Breivik in Norway, admittedly the outer reaches of the nastiness spectrum). Maybe it comes from interacting with machines. Maybe it's toxic media. Maybe I'm an old fart.

But I think it's happening -- what e.e. cummings called 'manunkind' -- and I wish it wasn't.

Wish there were more kinder kind in the universe.

Do I get three wishes? There's always a catch, isn't there. I say "world peace, obvs" and all the Muslims hug the Jews, the Americans invite Castro to Washington, Putin admits he has a body double for the physical stuff, like standing up ... but they decommission their nukes, beat their Kalashnikovs into tractor parts ... and then the Goa'uld invade in spaceships.

Always with the catch. *Kinder* will do.

Dec-01-11  achieve: Good to see Ohio picking up on my kinder kind reference, I've always been interested: Kinder, in German, means children; Kinderen, plural, in Dutch, and singular it spells the same as 'kind' but translates to 'a child' (one) = uni --> united --> united spirits --- <kind>'red spirits...

No need to emphasize that recently I am very much involved in protecting <Kindzijn> (being [allowed to be] a child - literally tranlates to: kind-ness (kind-zijn), Kinderen, Childeren, as in Brethren, Children, but children are smaller and more fragile, than brethren, and in much greater need of protection. How can I ignore and stay passive? I could not. But the struggle against the powers in place is immense. They refuse to beat their arms (not Kalashnikovs, but real arms and hands) into tractor parts, and somehow I am beginning to lose patience. Ca, c'est Frogspawn, aussi.

Their arms are their extremities, extensions of their vulgar minds, where the truly explosive material develops and houses.

Sigh, <Dom>... I'll try and play some SF on my piano now.

<OCF: That's only your definition.>

Oh goodness, I forgot some of my basic German. I was under the temporary misapprehension "sein" was German for "your", and looking at it today, I am at a loss why I thought so. I'm sure it's not the first time, but I bet <dom> was trying desperately to make sense of that which was nonsensical. Dare I try to rehabilitate myself?

LIFE Master AJ: I began talking about doing something about this back in July. I did ask for input many months ago, a while back (over a month ago?!?!?) <Morf> and <Patriot> picked out this game: M Rodshtein vs Zhou Jianchao, 2011.

My annotations of this game can be found here: http://www.ajschess.com/thegotmman/....

Input would be nice, but not required.

On a side note, about a week ago, I downloaded a new security patch for MSIE. (Microsoft Internet Explorer) I already e-mailed CG about it, nothing I can do will allow me to sign it.

I can visit (and sign in) using another web browser, (like Google Chrome); but I DON'T like it ... not one, little bit ...

which means, together with the trolls running amuck, its a good reason to spend a LOT less time here!!!!!

Domdaniel: <AJ> That browser problem is weird. I have the general impression that CG go to great lengths to be platform-friendly, and will try to solve any such glitches that arise. However, I'm not familiar with the security patch in question either.

Downloads are the new spam.

I see where you're coming from, btw, regarding our old pal with that oddly English form of dyslexia. It would be a strange coincidence indeed if the CG universe contained two individuals with identical spelling problems.

It's an idea, though. You take a well-earned rest, and F Troop finds itself without a reason to live. In frustration, the hardcore element turn cannibal and devour each other ...

OhioChessFan: I can affirm chessgames.com is very AOL unfriendly. I always use IE because very bad things happen when I use the AOL browser. I know other people in the real world who've mentioned it also.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> David Bowie had a song about it ... "Who'll love a lad in Seine?"

But is it about the moral danger of canoodling on the quays of Paris, or the physical risk entailed in making love on board a fishing trawler?

Hmm.

http://youtu.be/q2y9inP4CqE

It's coming back to me ... "saddening glissando strings ... Paris or maybe hell ..." Or is it "Paris or maybe Hull"? Hard to say, with Dave.

Dec-01-11  Thanh Phan: <LIFE Master AJ> What form of download was your new security patch for MSIE?

There are "Fake" security updates for Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 3 http://mynetx.net/4739/internet-exp... What you would really install upon downloading these “updates” is a trojan horse.

Domdaniel: In my youth, chessplayers of all nationalities spoke the magic words <j'adoube> when they wanted to touch a piece without moving it. We were told that this French phrase, meaning "I adjust" was part of the international language of chess.

Lately, however, I've begun to notice younger players uttering the words "I adjust". Maybe they feel self-conscious using French. But it isn't even good idiomatic English -- something like "I'm adjusting" or "Just adjusting" would sound more natural.

Even our CG Librarian says "I adjust" -- but at least that's *funny*.

Dec-04-11  Thanh Phan: <Domdaniel> The <j'adoube> word, maybe my attempt is wrong when I try to repeat it

For some reason the accent confuses, I can't hear where to stress the word correctly

Dec-05-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <Thanh> Now that you mention it, the stress is tricky. It should really go on the 2nd syllable - zhad-OOB - but the first 'a' sound should also be enunciated.

Strictly, the French 'ou' isn't the same as 'oo' ... but we can overlook that.

Hmmm. If you unvoice the consonants and change the vowels, you get 'shut up'. That's, um, interesting. Probably best not used OTB.

Dec-05-11  Thanh Phan: <Domdaniel> Thank you, that might have explained the raised eyebrows during my last game ~ I need to work on Accents more after your comments lol
