   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Oy, Larry-David didn't last long. FSR leaped in the right forensic direction ... I was checking games with 2.Qh5.

Because she likes to stand by her man, I think.

FSR: <Dom> 2.Qh5 - you mean the Parham Attack/Wayward Queen Attack, I take it. Why did you think those games were relevant? I don't get it.
Dec-11-11  achieve: <Dom> Did you happen to catch a glimpse of Snooker's pride, <the UK>, over the past few days?

Young new superstar Judd Trump again making a mark... Final starts now, and the new kid is like a breath of fresh air, as Jimmy said of Ronnie, all those years ago, a new People's Champion?, like Alex Higgins, White himself, Ronnie, and after a bit of a wait, dry spell, Judd trump looks to be the next in an exlusive line... He does lack some "sophistication," but there is some compensation, as they say.

You might want to check out the second and final session tonight at 8pm.

Domdaniel: <FSR> I remembered a comedy routine - maybe Larry David, maybe not - with a line about "bringing your queen out too early...".

Totally on the wrong track. After Woody Allen and this, it seems to be Comedy Year.

Which is fitting in oh so many ways.

FSR: <Dom> Ah - way too deep for me. Luckily for me, the simple-minded analysis was the correct one this time.

Domdaniel: <Niels> I'd sort of neglected snooker of late. A case of "Who *are* these kids anyway?" ... but thanks for the tip.

I bet Donald Trump wishes he was called Judd.

Dec-11-11  hms123: <Dom> I think that <Headstone> must be new. The publication date is October 4, 2011 (at least over here it is):

http://www.amazon.com/Headstone-Jac...

Dec-11-11  achieve: <Dom> Just check out the kid in case you have three minutes left, he's got history on his side, and the frightening thing is that history in this case is influentiable, Trump has got more than just his name going for him. Will it be enough?

But yeah anyone would have lost interest in Snooker if you tracked the main contenders of the last 15 years.

Take your time, pal. I'm on a break.

O Nuklu.

Domdaniel: I'm trying to solve these things with stone knives and bearskins. That was fast.
Dec-11-11  hms123: <jess>

<<H> you can guard against that <disintegrating with each turned page> by not reading the paperbacks in the bathtub. My Dad gave me that protip years ago, before the war.>

I only read in the shower. I think that is a big disadvantage for Kindle. It puts out the fire.

Domdaniel: Curses, foiled again, and again. Got so immersed in Tal/Shirov hunting that Quylthulg snaffled the God question before I even saw it.

Quylthulg has God Question answered shock.

Domdaniel: And then FSR beat me to Shirov. It couldn't happen to a nicer lawyer.

Congrats ... rats ... ts.

Domdaniel: <Jess> - < Did the clue have something to do with "butterfly"? >

Don't let on, but *all* the clues have a butterfly angle, due to the butterfly effect.

This is the secret behind the success of Quylthulg and FSR. They are good at mothing.

Dec-12-11  whiteshark: Darn, I've lost track of my script, can anyone tell me... is Cameron playing the role of Chamberlain, or Churchill today?

  Domdaniel: <Sharky> Aethelred the Unready.

It meant 'ill-advised' in Anglo-Saxon, apparently.

  Domdaniel: Quylthulg is King.

I passed a few minutes looking at the prize-winning microphotographic images for the past few years, but didn't actually get anywhere.

O Nuklu, thy servant Switch will be disqualified soon.

Dec-12-11

Domdaniel: That was Switch's 16th Klu win, by my count: 2-4-5-1-4 over 5 years, with one still possible this year.

MAJ, on 13, and *me*, on 11, have yet to feature this time.

Domdaniel: I've been reading the contents of this forum from this time last year. Sigh.

And <Stonehenge> gave me a prezzie of this: http://youtu.be/BqfZUX5svCg

Happy times.

Dec-12-11  dakgootje: No luck yet either then this year?

The clues are either impossible, or solved. The reason must be I have no particular liking for either butter, or flies.

It would be nice to actually point to a reason.

But I have no clue.

  Domdaniel: Hear us, O Nuklu.

Let the hex on thy occasional servant, well, valet, Dom, be lifted.

Let <dak> rise from the gutter and see the stars.

O Nuklu.

Dec-12-11  dakgootje: O Nuklu,

Dost Thou actually lend Thine Ear to complainths? Were that it be, Thou art Awesome.

Dec-12-11

Domdaniel: If I was a deity, last thing I'd want is a bunch of sub-deities and lesser beings wailing prayers and invocations at me, and telling me how awesome I was. However true.

- "Get these creeps offa me already!", I might say.

Or I might just give 'em what they want. It can be less troublesome.

Dec-13-11  dakgootje: The first Rule in my 'Book of Rules that ought Not to be Broken <OR ELSE>..' would be that I'd turn a blind ear and deaf eye to complainers. Also, I find that -as a deity- you should try not to define the ways anyone you dislike get tortured in. The threat is stronger than the execution. As long as the execution is inevitable.

Or I'd pretend to ignore them, and increase the agony a bit more, in a subtle way. By having stupid people, with surnames starting with B, be their leaders.
