   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

   Jan-06-19 Anand vs J Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Nuklu, let <dak> and <mack> win some. After that you can hand out prizes to Zak, flak, paddywhack, usw.
Dec-13-11  dakgootje: Interestingly, I came up with the first 3 leading B's in the same order ;)

Ended with Balkenende - but, truth be told, he isn't stupid. Lack of charisme, sure, but objectively quite capable.

<B's make good writers>

And at least 1 bad writer: Brown.

Oh, we might actually add Gordon to the list of leaders - but I'm not up-to-date with his leading prowess.

Dec-13-11  dakgootje: I've always felt the word 'prowess' would be much better suited describing a lioness.

Domdaniel: <dak> Yep, strange how we both skipped Brown at first and thought of Blair. I suppose, like Brezhnev, poor old Brown seems a historical relic. Or Gordon of Khartoum.

Gordon's is also a type of gin, of course, though much inferior to Dutch varieties.

Domdaniel: Dammit, I missed the short life of Klu #16, despite being in the vicinity of a 'puter all day. Now, how could that happen?

Wouldn't have got it anyway. I'd have been checking on my own games.

Domdaniel: And so we bid farewell to the Alpha quadrant, in which we scored a fat null.

Top scores after 4.25 years and 272 clues:

SwitchingQuylthulg: 16 (2+4+5+1+4)
MostlyAverageJoe: 13
Domdaniel: 11

Dec-13-11  dakgootje: I could theoretically triple my clue-count this year ;)
Dec-13-11  mworld: very strange event. I just now clicked on it, only to find out it was over.

Domdaniel: <mworld> You mean the Snowdrops & Daffodils, Old Farts vs Young Tarts thing? Or the first quarter of the rite of Nuklu?
Dec-13-11

Domdaniel: Weird. They cut the top off the list of current/recent Klu winners, so it now starts at #5. I assumed it meant another one had come and gone, but apparently not.

Domdaniel: <Theory of Everything> Most people are part of the crowd, life's lookers-on. Which isn't necessarily bad, as long as they actually bother to *look*.

Then there are the others - not all insanely extroverted, though it helps - who are metaphorically either funambulists or ecdysiasts. I'm more of the former, I reckon.

An occasional genius manages to be both, doing a strip-tease on the high wire.

Dec-13-11  mworld: Nuklu - I missed his coming apparently. I guess I'll just have to wait for the Mahdi now since apparently the messiah has come and gone as well =]

Btw, i happened to like your Big TOE.

Domdaniel: <mworld> You say the nicest things.

I once wrote something with the line "They were waiting for the second coming, but nobody expected a third".

Domdaniel: Another quote, nicely cited by <mack> in the Kib Kaff earlier today, was "Combinations and Chemistry are your only men". Now the top novelists are latching onto my ideas, just like they always do.

Even though it's not due to be published until April, I just got an advance copy of Peter Carey's latest, "The Chemistry of Tears".

It's probably very good. The cover image looks a bit like my avatar would, were it closed and, er, leaking slightly.

"Wells teared up in his eyes ..."

Domdaniel: And Good♘ to all devotees of Nuklu. I no longer have the energy to wait up for clues that I then won't be able to solve.

Leave one for the morning, huh?

Domdaniel: <dak> Nuklu smiles! Great news! I'm using screamers!!

Couldn't happen to a nice Dutch guttersnipe and polymath.

I'd woken up and blearily checked out 'Lambert' but didn't follow through ...

Thanks, dakkie, thakkie.

Dec-14-11  Benzol: <A barber who lived in Batavia Was known for his fearless behavia

<Dom> I'm sorry I missed this first time around, it's classic.

Domdaniel: <Benzol> Yup, one of my faves. 'Jakarta' doesn't work as well as Batavia, though. The barber had to move to Belgravia.

Domdaniel: ... which reminds me of the old comedy routine ...

- The wife and I went on a cruise to Indonesia and Malaysia ...

- Djakarta?

- No, she went of her own free will. Then she took me to some weird place in Northernest America.

- Where?

- Dunno. But hold on, Alaska.

Dec-14-11  dakgootje: Even better news! This means Nuklu, Great be His Name, actually listens to complaints!

In other news, I think I've used a tenfold amount of exclamation marks on this shirtwinning day - compared to a normal shirtless day.
