Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Ohio> And yet Mr Presley, the King, was anything but silent, and had many female fans.

Mr Dylan had a line about "The Ohio, and all of them rebel rivers".

Is there a connection?

Domdaniel: <duchamp64> Hi, Allan. Nothing new to report, I'm afraid - a fire in my home last year destroyed many of my books and papers, including Duchamp-related material. I'm trying to rebuild, but there was stuff there that took me years to find.

Annie K.: <Dom: <It may even be possible to play e4 *three* times in a single game>>

And that's just White... ;)

Jun-18-13

Domdaniel: <A> I tried to calculate the max number of pawns that could reach e4 during a single game, if (a) it didn't matter whether they were white or black, and (b) they could reach e4 via a capture as well as a normal pawn move. It looks like five white pawns and seven (!) black ones can get there, though I don't think there are sufficient captures available for that.

Domdaniel: <hms> You've retired? Congrats. Are you an Emeritus or an Escapee?
Jun-18-13
Premium Chessgames Member
Annie K.: Nice. :) Well, maybe there would be enough possible captures without clause b, particularly since _xe4 is arguably not "the classic e4 move" anyway - then you have 3 White pawns and 5 Black ones. Can't play e4 too often, I always say! :D

Domdaniel: <A> Yep, e4 is like voting -- for full democratic effect, vote early and vote often.
Jun-18-13  hms123: <Dom>

Emeritus officially; Escapee psychologically.

We are in Maine chasing down lobsters, scallops, and craft beers. Our luck is in thus far.

Bar Harbor?

Jun-20-13  hms123: <Dom>

Yes. Bar Harbor. It is stunningly beautiful. Rocky coastlines are everywhere.

Btw, in your honor, I have just about finished re-reading <Snow Crash>. Stephenson was prescient back in 1992. The book is even more impressive as time passes.

I should get to some of your current recommendations when I return to the hot and humid southern realm.

  Annie K.: <Switch> Brilliant. Thanks! :D

Hmm... if statistically Black could get more pawns to e4 than White, how come de facto White seems to play e4 more often?? ;s

Jun-21-13
Premium Chessgames Member
SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> It's easier for White to get <one> pawn there :)

When it comes to getting four or more pawns there, Black does do it more often; similarly, White is more likely to get four pawns to e5. Here's a fun example of the latter:

T Gillani vs S Belkhodja, 2006

The game opens with <1. e4>... and the pawn patiently sits there for the next 96 moves. In the meantime, three Black pawns and three other White pawns visit the square e5. Finally, well into the endgame, the original e-pawn gets into the action with <98. e5> :)

Domdaniel: <SwitchingQ> Brilliant, sir. A wonderful achievement, a vital addition to chess lore, and a theoretical improvement on the classic Murphy-Endon game (which also featured men in white coats, though one of them may have been playing).

Domdaniel: <hms> I've never been to Bar Harbor, although my brother used to work there. There's a rocky coastline much closer to me, in West Cork. Also pretty stunning.

Annie K.: <Switch> not to mention the part about how just because something is possible, doesn't necessarily mean that it would be a good idea to actually do it? ;D

Thx for game. :)

Pics or it didn't happen, as they say on the netz... ;)
