| Dec-23-13 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <MostlyAverageJoe: ... Alas, not this year, I am afraid.> Glad to admit that I was wrong.
Came back from a party, turned on the computer, the clue appeared soon thereafter and luckily, it was simple enough... |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: Anyone who can solve any of those clues after being to a party deserves a bigger prize. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <MAJ> -- < and <JamesBJames> is done for this year with 13 total.>
Seems he wasn't quite done ... he picked up #57 as well. |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Yeah, I mis-counted... |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: I missed #57 completely ... a pity, as I've previously solved Klus involving both short narratives and chemical elements. Oh, well. And I don't actually have the periodic table memorized, so somebody would no doubt have been faster. <MAJ> Um, haven't you got places to be? Parties, etc? |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | perfidious: <Domdaniel....(T)hose Keene cases involving large-scale copying are just indefensible, I agree....> This is pure plagiarism.
<My point is just that chess notes aren't always easy to write without (seemingly) borrowing from other sources.> Indeed not. |

Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <Mark> That game, Rubinstein vs S F Lebedev, 1903, *is* the Fort Knox Variation. Rustemov plays it regularly. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <perf> I know we agree with one another to a ridiculous extent ... so maybe we can (mildly) agree to differ on the Keene case? I accept that he has erred (to put it, again, mildly), and I have no wish to defend him ... but I think the attacks on him, though often amusing, are over the top.
I don't believe in fawning to GMs -- I've met a few of them (and played Keene), and they're all just human beings, with everything which that entails. But Keene's crimes in this case (though real enough) do not warrant the degree of opprobrium generated. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: "I can't believe that until I see a fictional TV program espousing your point of view."
- Homer Simpson.
"I heard that science was used to make bombs."
- Ditto. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: Lo, where art thou, Nuklu?
We wait
And the waiting is long.
We are waiters.
We also serve who only stand and wait. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: I wonder whether a Klu would ever use a FIDE ID code to indicate a player?
Mine, I think, is 2501414 ... which reminds me of root-2. |

One would hope that, having been caught with one's hand in the cookie jar on multiple occasions and exposed for all to see, that the person in question would exercise a degree of cleverness. Still and all, these multiple offences hardly equate to being, eg, a murderer. As you say, a little perspective would be of use in all this. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <perf> Heh, yes, indeed. In my experience, those who have been caught with a hand in the cookie jar often try to bluff it out ... by pretending that it never happened, nobody saw it happen, and it didn't much matter anyway... |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | MarkFinan: DOM!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT (ChANnEl >)?
Seriously mate, I can't find it. What channel? I love it when Blackadder gets the visits from Robbie Coltrane! Sooooooo funny lol. What channel? 🎄 |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | MarkFinan: And of course.. Happy Xmas to you too mate. |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | dakgootje: <Regarding Operation Doubtful Existence of Cookies in Schrodingers Jar.> I admittedly haven't been following the issue closely - but I suspect the main reason for those keen on attacking Keene is that he doesn't stop. Normally you catch someone, they are embarrassed and/or aggressive and everyone else points and laughs. But Keene isn't playing according to those rules. Instead he's happily taking a cookie shower, during which the Times is a-okay with the matter. But perhaps I'm misinformed concerning the continued nature of cookie snatching. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <Mark> Sorry, it was RTE -- Irish TV. You don't have it, I think.
Brilliant, though. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <dak> In my experience, almost everyone who writes for The Times is like that (I used to, but I escaped!).
They know they're doing bad things, they know that Rupert wants them to go on doing bad things, so they do. |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | dakgootje: For some reason years and years ago I used to think the Times was one of the proper quality newspapers. Suppose the reason is that it sounds rather old and distinguished. So surely it has to be the zenith of newspaper quality. Power of names :) |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: Oh, crap. I've only seen one Klu today, and that was snapped up before I got anywhere. I suspect it's not worth my while waiting for another one.
OK, so some of the big hitters are now Pentakluers, and thus out of the running. But there are still plenty of smart people left. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <dak> It *was* a proper quality newspaper, for more than 100 years. Then Murdoch bought it. |
|
| Dec-23-13 | | hms123: <Dom> I just got a complete set of <Black Adder> and am watching from the beginning while on the treadmill. Today's episode involved <Witchsmeller Pursuivant>. They tried to burn the Black Adder and his pals at the stake. It didn't work. Good thing, because I have a bunch more to go. The subtitles help. |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <hms> Enjoy. I haven't seen *that* many episodes, but the ones that I have seen are great. And Mark's enthusiasm helps.
As I said, enjoy! |
|
Dec-23-13
 | | Domdaniel: <hms> -- While on the *treadmill*?
Isn't that an extra quantum of punishment? |
