 | | Domdaniel: A traditional Irish curse: "May she marry a ghost and bear him a kitten..." |
|
Jan-02-14
 | | Annie K.: Heh... not much of a curse, is it?
Hope things are going well. :) |
|
Jan-03-14
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hoppy New Year <Dom>! Did yer get out for St. Paddies this year? Or am I early... Remember <The Slid> |
|
Jan-03-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Yep, maybe a tad early ... though it's mebbe best to get the ghastly thing out of the way, eh? |
|
Jan-03-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> It's from a poem by James Stephens, I think -- "May she marry a ghost and bear him a kitten, and may the high king of glory permit her to get the mange."
And yes, even with that addendum, it's not the world's most devastating curse, is it?
I recall an incident during my schooldays, when a 'daring' fellow pupil scrawled an F-word on the blackboard just before the teacher arrived. The teacher walked in, and sneered: "F---? A coarse Anglo-Saxon curse! If you want to swear, use the Irish language!" -- and he wrote the words "Buineach ort" on the board, glossing it as "A diarrhoea upon you" or "may you have a laxity of the bowels!" |

If you want to swear, use the Irish language!" -- and he wrote the words "Buineach ort" on the board, glossing it as "A diarrhoea upon you" or "may you have a laxity of the bowels!"> For real swearing, you need to use Slavic languages. This one (Polish) certainly improves over "Buineach ort": "A żeby cię obesrało grząskim gównem!" == "May slushy @#$% be crapped upon you!" BTW, I see that CG filters certain words, e.g, in the above, @#$% should be a near-homophone of "sheet." |

 | | Domdaniel: <MAJ> Indeed. I've heard that Hungarian is particularly rich in this regard. Trust the Magyars. |
|
| Jan-05-14 | | MarkFinan: I knew I had something to show you, Dom. No! Not that mate! I like you, but... (lol? ) .. Anyways. I looked in the database the other day for an early frenchie and found what I personally think has some great points. I commented there the other day because I found some odd things as I looked over the game with droidfish, and I planned on going back and posting my odd engine 'findings' probably today at some point, but thought I'd show it you first and see if you had any specific thoughts on certain moves? Paulsen vs Kolisch, 1861 |
|
Jan-05-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Mark> That's strange ... I also found myself looking at some of Paulsen's games the other day. About all I knew of him before was that he played very slowly, which annoyed the otherwise unflappable Morphy. But he was an interesting player, quite modern in some ways, eg his use of the Sicilian as Black.
As for early French games, a lot of White players played the exchange e4xd5 rather than create a pawn chain with e5 etc. I think that, more than most openings, the French has a definite history, with different strategies in use at different times. |

 | | Domdaniel: There was a young girl in Quebec
Who was buried in snow to her neck
They asked "Are you friz?"
She said, "Yeah, I is,
- But we don't call that cold in Quebec". |

| Jan-06-14 | | MarkFinan: <As for early French games, a lot of White players played the exchange e4xd5 rather than create a pawn chain with e5 etc.> This is what I do too Dom. I'm not quite sure why, maybe I had a really bad thrashing with it a couple of times a few years back, and my brain just tells me to avoid it altogether, but either way. I don't like it from whites perspective one bit! What's your opinion on Steinitz, Paulsen and Morphy and the other mid-late 19th century greats? I like their games more than modern players but only because there's more mistakes, which of course make for more exciting games. And have I pissed you off at all lately? As in, more than usual, lol. Or do you *really* think I'm trying to insult someones intelligence when I use that acronym, because i'll tell you now. I'm not! I know you're a bit of a wordsmith, so you could probably find some fault in 99% of my posts here, but I sense there's something else I've done that's pissed you off? Maybe im wrong, but id appreciate you letting me know so we can deal with whatever this problem is, and then move on, because I really do plan on making this year a good one and not just when I visit this site, so let's iron out any differences we may have as soon as.. ✌ |

Jan-06-14
 | | Annie K.: Heheh. No, Mark, don't take it personally. Dom has a bit of a hang-up on this subject, going way back... Put <user:Domdaniel lol> in a kibitz search, and see for yourself. This just... happens sometimes, lol. ;p |
|
| Jan-06-14 | | MarkFinan: Thanks Annie.. I just thought I'd done something wrong, but if Doms an anti loller I understand now. Lol 😆 |
|
Jan-06-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Mark> Yeah, Annie is right ... I was complaining about LOL years ago, even before you arrived. Definitely nothing personal. Eh, lol. |
