Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Terribly nice of you, <moronovich> ... but I do *not* need cheering up. I am quite cheered up enough as things are. Any more cheering up and I'll break down.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Ah yes, indeed, <The Van> ... a fine Stephen Frears movie, set in Dublin. I probably interviewed Frears and the van and the guy from Star Trek... and yes, I am actually a fully qualified Saint.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Thanx ... but *my* national ant-thing is "Antarctica Starts Here" ... all songs from north of the Antarctic circle are enemy propaganda.

"Her schoolhouse mind has windows now
Where handsome creatures come to watch
The anaesthetic wearing off
Antarctica starts here."

Domdaniel: A fatal stabbing in Dublin has been linked by police to a dispute over a game of chess: http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0112/49...

This is a dangerous hobby, people.

Domdaniel: <Garda sources say that the pair were playing chess when one of the men attempted to move his king. That led to a dispute over the movement of the piece. The victim was then bludgeoned with a dumbell, before being stabbed.>

I can understand people killing one another over the en passant rule, or the Knight's move. But the King? Must have been in check, I guess...

The moral: never play chess in the presence of dumbells.

Domdaniel: I am reminded (don't ask why!) of the words of the late Viv Stanshall, playing Sir Henry Rawlinson ...

"You're supposed to *love* me, you vile jelly! Take that!" (Thwack!)
Fortunately, Henry hit him with the soft end of the pistol...

OhioChessFan: This bothers me every year and every year I type out a post or 10 about it and delete all of them. This year I thought I'd change the karma and leave the posts. And it's happening again. Seriously?!

Domdaniel: <Ohio> I know, I know. Something is very wrong. Is it a kind of cosmic inertia? Whatever has happened before is more likely to happen again? Or is it a self-fulfilling prophecy?
Incidentally, I reckon that the current Caissar system offers a premium to those who pick up early votes in each category -- later voters might not be sure of the contenders, and some will just copy what they've seen.

I'm not really complaining, as a couple of my earlier votes turned out to be winners.

Domdaniel: <Ohio> As you've probably noticed, it's not just the likely winner ... at least two of those in runner-up positions aren't funny either.

There, I said it.

OhioChessFan: One of the runnerups isn't remotely funny. I really don't get it.

  Domdaniel: I don't get it either. Unless ... maybe everyone else has a <sense Yuma>, and we don't ...?

Nah, I don't buy it.

OhioChessFan: On a related note, last year I emailed one of my correspondents and asked about their vote, whereupon they admitted their candidate wasn't funny but it would mean a lot to him to win. I sort of want to ask all the other people "What exactly do you find funny in him?" Next year I'm just closing my eyes. Maybe you can close your eye. Maybe this is all unsporting, but your forum is hidden from new kibitzing after all, and I do hope it's not found out I'm whining here.

<The moral: never play chess in the presence of dumbells.>

Rhymes with bumbles maybe?

There are people who can make their fellow kibitzers smile and laugh by borrowing from joke books and internet humor sites, and there are people who can make their fellow kibitzers smile and laugh because they have an actual sense of humor. A few members seem to be unable to tell the difference, or don't care about it; not that surprising, really.

Domdaniel: That 'chess killing' in Dublin gets weirder: now certain media outlets are reporting a cannibalism angle, which clearly trumps chess on the tabloid weirdness scale.

The man charged with the killing is from Sicily, which may point to the opening used.

Domdaniel: <Switch> Internet *humor*? Who knew?
Jan-14-14  MarkFinan: <Yet, even so, I don't think that Ray should be demonized. He has done good things and bad things. Who hasn't?>

From Karpova forum.

Too bloody right, and thank god for some sense that I call "working class sense". Common sense.
