Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <waustad> I understand, believe me. I've also turned into a hopeless slob - yet I wasn't always like this. I used to cook quite well, too - but these days the lure of the microwave and the takeaway tends to win out.

All the climates are changing anyway. We've had a succession of cold, wet winters and mostly poor summers.

Or maybe complaining is an essential element of the 50/60-something condition?

Apr-01-14  waustad: Now Kasparov is in Ireland. That adds to the likelyhood of some really foolish press commentary. Not because it's Ireland, but because most journalists haven't a clue about chess. Have you seen anything really funny?

Domdaniel: <waustad> Kasparov's Ireland visit - to Dublin - coincided with the Cork Masters tournament, near to where I live. So I didn't pay much attention to Gazza, apart from watching his TV interview -- in which nothing of any great interest took place. Though I heard that he had cancelled an earlier event with chess-playing schoolkids because he wanted to conserve his energy for the TV show. This, as you might imagine, did not go down well.

Domdaniel: <Alien Math> Yes, my old friend William Gibson is a brilliant writer. About ten years ago, we used to look very similar, so he called me "that handsome man". But now I think we've diverged.

As for English usage, if you want to give your own opinion, it is generally better to say "I", as in "I think...". Saying "her" instead is awkward.

Yeah, Gibson doesn't look so good anymore. :(

Domdaniel: <Annie> Yes, William seems to have lost some hair, and I haven't. But of course he's about ten years older than me.

Domdaniel: Twenty-plus years ago, the first time I met Gibson, was a hoot. We looked alike - skinny guys with floppy hair and glasses - and we were dressed alike - black leather jackets, dark clothes. The publisher's PR person had trouble keeping a straight face. WG and I were both amused, though I was also embarrassed in case he thought it was a deliberate act of impersonation. But we then spent some time discussing whether the similarity was due to genes (his putative Irish ancestors) or memes (my adherence to certain cultural norms). The fact that I'd been trying to write fiction not unlike his was a further source of confusion.

Domdaniel: <Alien Math> If you understand the use of pronouns - <he her she I him (etc)> - then you should use them. For example, instead of writing "think have the <he her she I him> understood", it is better to say something like "I think I understand the use of English pronouns now", or "I think I have understood the use of <he her she I him>".

The point is simple. If *you* are the person who understands (the same applies to other actions) then say so. Avoid indirect constructions such as "think have ... understood" -- it is much better to say "I think that ... I have understood...".

The same principle applies to such phrases of yours as "when try type here" and "still favour Gibson". Better, always, to use a first-person pronoun ("I") in such cases: "I still favour Gibson..." and so on.

I hope you don't mind me pointing these things out. As I said before, your use (and comprehension) of English is definitely improving -- but the use of active pronouns seems to be a difficult area. As <Annie> said, this could be the influence of Vietnamese usage.

Domdaniel: BTW, I have never taught English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), though I *have* taught English Language & Literature at University level, and I have discussed English language teaching with friends who were actively involved.

Of course, TEFL *also* stands for "Teaching Ewok as a Foreign Language"...

Domdaniel: I wrote this to <Alien Math>: < Better, always, to use a first-person pronoun ("I") in such cases: "I still favour Gibson..." and so on.>

I should have taken my own advice and written something like this: "I think it is always better to use a first-person pronoun..."
