Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

May-06-14  Thanh Phan: We have been talking some about the differences in languages, and Hânh revealed an interesting conflict,

she has had no problems with German, Russian or Chinese, she has a fear of being Americanized or losing her Việt identity, and has asked me to attempt to express her thought here

That might be one of her main language blocks with learning English

  Annie K.: <Dom> Happy Birthday, sweet! :)

<Thanh> that's a very good insight. :) Please tell your sister that we all change in all sorts of ways in the course of our lives, as we gain experiences and understanding, but more knowledge to go on in deciding in what ways she wants to change, and what to retain of her earlier self, is never a bad thing, and these decisions will always be up to her. She need not be afraid of changing in ways that she won't want to.

Domdaniel: <Thanh> Perhaps because America is so culturally dominant, many of us who aren't American sometimes worry about being Americanized. But I think that if the original identity -- Viet, Irish, whatever -- is reasonably secure, then there should be no fear of it being submerged. Paradoxically, those who worry about losing their identity are often the most secure. People who never worry about such things often shed their original identity without a thought.

Domdaniel: <Annie> -- < these decisions will always be up to her.> In North America and most of Europe, yes, I agree. But there are still far too many countries in Asia and Africa (etc.) where a woman is not free to decide when and how to change. Which is, of course, deplorable and greatly regrettable.

Annie K.: Indeed, although also completely irrelevant to the issue at hand... :)

Are you doing anything novel, daring and reckless to celebrate your birthday? Such as trying out Emrald, or playing chess online? ;)

May-07-14  Alien Math: Happy Birthday <Domdaniel>!

Thank you <Domdaniel> and <Annie K.> appears I collect much to think about, interest to note several problems with English are mine own limits from worry

May-08-14  Thanh Phan: Happy Birthday <Domdaniel>! Hope you have a good day!

  Annie K.: <appears I collect much to think about>

A-ha... now I get it!

<Hanh> you used 'collect' to avoid 'gather', right? ;)

The word you are looking for is 'have': 'I have much to think about.'

'Have' and 'has' are used a lot in English:

I have, you have, we have, they have;
he has, she has, it has.

Have a good day, you two too. :)

May-09-14  Alien Math: Some confusion, I collect or gather many notes about, how or when sentence become "I have much to think about" not understand sorry

Domdaniel: <Annie> -- <Are you doing anything novel, daring and reckless to celebrate your birthday?> Um, no. Unless some Indian food counts?
I still prefer not to play chess online ... but I have two club games on Saturday, the last of the season. My score so far is a poor 3/8, so I really need some wins.

Domdaniel: 'Recollect' means much the same as 'remember' ... but 'collect' is not the same as 'member'. Funny, that.

'I have much to think about' = 'There is much for me to think about' ...

Now that I have their notes, I realize I have much to think about, or I realize there is much for me to think about,

Domdaniel: <A> Woohoo yourself. I'm exhausted - the 2nd game went to a 65-move queen ending where both sides had mate threats, but I somehow hung on to win. And win with a mate, ackshly. In both games I had a lost position earlier, but scrambled a win. Viva Korchnoi!
