   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: Still (kick!) kicking myself (kick!) over Klu #5, which (kick!) I should've got at once. Because I can read international cc notation, and even (kick!) knew the game.

But no, (kick!) I decided to investigate postal (as in zip) codes instead...

Domdaniel: Apparently two of the first five clues contained slight errors.

Note that, while some people point to these errors as reasons for their failure to solve the puzzle, others carry on and work it out anyway.

Dec-11-14  Thanh Phan: That was interesting, when I couldn't figure what to do at the Look at the Squares stage, I entertained myself with trying to figure how it became spelt wrong, deciding I must have made a mistake somewhere, not thinking there might have been a mistake in the clue

Domdaniel: <Thanh Phan> Ouch! It sounds as if you were very close to solving it. I hope you get one soon.

Annie K.: Stop the violence! STOP THE VIOLENCE!!! ;s

Heh. Nice work, Thanh, I went to sleep yesterday after solving cryptoklu stage 1 and alerting the relevant authorities. ;p

Mebbe I'll have smore time for klus during the weekend. :)

Dec-11-14

  Domdaniel: <chancho> Uh, a *hashishin* ... man?

Or, alternately, Rear Admiral Sir Francis Bottomley, of MI5...?

Dec-11-14

Domdaniel: <chancho> I don't think being smart has much to do with it ... unless you mean *smartass*, of course ...?
Dec-11-14

  chancho: No.

I meant that I knew you'd find that question of mine ridiculously easy.

:-)

Domdaniel: Well, thanks, seriously. Now hang around and see just how dumb a supposedly smart person can be.

Domdaniel: Argh. In Klu 13, I quickly saw 'palimpsest', had the right idea, but stuck on 'H' ... and gev upp.

See previous note.

Dec-13-14  Alien Math: Not a total loss here, palimpsest,

now I know my anagram software isn't broken,

and find slightly amusing game video asdfoc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDM...

Domdaniel: <Alien Math> I use this website for anagrams: http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/

It gets a lot of use, as I'm a fan of cryptic crosswords.

In Klu 13, I wrote down 'palimpsest' and then 'IICIOV' ... close to the solution, Ilchov.

Then, brilliantly, I tried to turn IICIOV into numbers...

Domdaniel: Ouch - I missed Klu 15, Seliger, completely. Another not-so-difficult one ... but it didn't last long.

I see there is only one Seliger game in the database - this has also been the case with a few other solutions this year. Which is good, I suppose ... if you work out the name, you don't have to plod through a list of possibilities.

Domdaniel: Oy, another Klu gets away ... and we're 1/4 of the way through already...
Dec-14-14  Thanh Phan: The only time I find clues are when I'm almost asleep or almost awake, at least a couple of the super fasts are near their claim limit
Dec-14-14

SwitchingQuylthulg: I think 12 of 19 klus so far have gone up when I was sleeping, and two of the other seven went up after midnight, when I probably <should> have been sleeping. I'm starting to worry this is another "we live in the wrong time zone" year... but I hope CG's made sure it's a fair distribution, and more klus will start showing up in my waking hours later on.
Dec-14-14

Domdaniel: I'm sleeping too much to catch many of them in time, and I also seem to miss several while technically awake.
Dec-14-14

chancho: I identified Miles Davis, so I knew it was Tony Miles.

I went for Miles vs Davies.

No dice.

Then I see the clue was solved.

Luther?

I've never seen that damned show before, so there goes that.

Dec-14-14

Domdaniel: <chancho> A couple of other routes to the same end:

(1) Feed the image of chessplayers to an image identification site. Find out about something called 'Luther'. Then see the clue has been solved.

(2) Miss it entirely (my strategy).
Then see the clue has been solved.

Dec-14-14  waustad: So often I can remember somebody's life story but can't remember the name. It happens with real people and with people I've read about like baseball players or chess players. With chess players part of the problem is often the names themselves, which come from languages I know almost nothing about. Looking at a junior tournament being played in Hungary now I saw a Mongolian player whose first and last names both began with "Uu". My knowledge of Mongolian chess is pretty much limited to "Chimi" and the other one.

Domdaniel: <waustad> Without looking it up, wasn't there a Mongolian who played Fischer? Was it Tumurbator? No, I don't think it was. Myagmarsuren? Myagmasuren?

Then there's Batchimeg, of course.
