   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: This event, the Mulcahy Memorial Tournament in Cork, is the first I ever played in ... in 1975, almost 40 years ago. Scary, that.

Because it is traditionally run as one open Swiss tournament with no sections, there's always a danger (for me) of meeting much stronger and much weaker opponents in alternate rounds. This happened to me several times over the years - especially in the 1980s when the event had a strong entry. I used to score 3/6 ... 3 easy wins, 3 losses.

In recent years, the Mulcahy Memorial has not been quite so strong, and I've scored 4/6 a couple of times. But there was usually someone like IM Alex Lopez between me and the prizes.

This year's entry has a couple of 2300+ players, De Verdier and Daly. I seem to be seeded 15th. We shall see...

Domdaniel: Well, OK, so I won the first game: a French, Advance Var., Wade ...Bd7-b5. Not very exciting: I exchanged off the LSBs and Queens (didn't feel like being attacked), won a pawn, ground out a win in a Rook ending.

My opponent was rated about 1200. In the morning I face FM Colm Daly, more than 1000 points higher. These kind of oscillations tend to happen in a one-section open tournament like this.

I've only played Daly once before - a loss in the 1980s. We shall see...
