Dec-30-14
 | | Domdaniel: Now, if I only had time to rebuild my openings between now and Friday... |
Dec-31-14
 | | Annie K.: Don't be Russian to play the English, now... I suppose the French is ok too. ;) |
Dec-31-14
 | | chancho: Happy New Year, <Dom>! |
Dec-31-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Alien Math> I'm sorry, nothing too sinister was intended. "Mathilde" is simply a name that begins with the letters M-a-t-h... I'll try not to do it again. |
Dec-31-14
 | | Domdaniel: Remove those ear-muffs, be natural ... Hippie Nude Ears, everyone! |
Dec-31-14
 | | Domdaniel: To those in China, Israel, etc, whose years turn over on another date, and who may be bemused by this talk about 'nude ears', I say: "Bare with us". |
Dec-31-14
 | | Annie K.: But my ears will freeze...? ;s |
Dec-31-14
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <Domdaniel> Happy New Year! |

Dec-31-14

Jan-01-15
 | | Domdaniel: This event, the Mulcahy Memorial Tournament in Cork, is the first I ever played in ... in 1975, almost 40 years ago. Scary, that. Because it is traditionally run as one open Swiss tournament with no sections, there's always a danger (for me) of meeting much stronger and much weaker opponents in alternate rounds. This happened to me several times over the years - especially in the 1980s when the event had a strong entry. I used to score 3/6 ... 3 easy wins, 3 losses. In recent years, the Mulcahy Memorial has not been quite so strong, and I've scored 4/6 a couple of times. But there was usually someone like IM Alex Lopez between me and the prizes. This year's entry has a couple of 2300+ players, De Verdier and Daly. I seem to be seeded 15th. We shall see... |
Jan-01-15
 | | Annie K.: In 1975, I was just beginning to talk. :)
And I haven't stopped since! ;p |
Jan-01-15
 | | Domdaniel: You youngsters ... I bet you know how the interweb works too... |
| Jan-01-15 | | Shams: In January of 1975 I was a zygote. I've never been anything as cool-sounding since. |
Jan-02-15
 | | Annie K.: Nobody knows the mysterious ways of the interweb. :) <Shams>, what, you're younger than me? Toddler. ;p |
Jan-02-15
 | | Domdaniel: Well, OK, so I won the first game: a French, Advance Var., Wade ...Bd7-b5. Not very exciting: I exchanged off the LSBs and Queens (didn't feel like being attacked), won a pawn, ground out a win in a Rook ending. My opponent was rated about 1200. In the morning I face FM Colm Daly, more than 1000 points higher. These kind of oscillations tend to happen in a one-section open tournament like this. I've only played Daly once before - a loss in the 1980s. We shall see... |
