   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

   Jan-06-19 Anand vs J Fedorowicz, 1990 (replies)

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Ohio> "If you see someone drowning -- LOL".

Insane, obviously, if taken in that sense. But many of the LOLs on this site are no less inane.

I'm continually baffled as to why anyone, in kibitzing on a game, should regard a good, bad, unusual or original move as an excuse to laugh.

Haven't they heard of *awe*?

As the John Wayne story (apocryphal) put it, Wayne spoke a line of dialog ("Surely this man is the son of God") rather woodenly, and the director asked him to try again, "with more awe".

Wayne complied. "Aww, surely this man is the son of God".

But I digress. A plague upon Lollards.

Intending to rob the stock exchange with my trusty computer, I found I had accidentally broken into a French financial site. "Aaargh", I groaned. "I've hacked the wrong bourse!"

Dec-25-14  wordfunph: <Dom> Merry Christmas!
Dec-25-14  waustad: Looking at the BBC website it seems Ireland has developed some sort of "12 pubs of Christmas" phenomenon. Where I live this sort of drinking herd is known as a "shuffle" and usually happens at the end of the school year. It started as a way to sell tee shirts. I usually try to avoid bars during these amateur hour events, like New Years, St. Pats, ...
