 | | Annie K.: Well, we could just talk about Wesley So, like everybody else... nah, better not. ;s Caruana's federation change? Carlsen and the upcoming Norway tourney? Kasparov's highly impressive recent revisitation of Caissa's fields? Any games you played lately? ;) |

 | | Domdaniel: <French Defence Fans> Does anyone have any comments on the Gambit line with b4 in the Wade Variation of the Advance French? I made some comments here: S Tidman vs S Chang, 2006 |

 | | Domdaniel: More French notes: it's about two years since anyone played either 3.Nc3 or 3.Nd2 against me in the French -- and these used to be regarded as the main lines. Recently, all I seem to see is the Advance (3.e5) or the Exchange (3.exd5 exd5, often with the Monte Carlo line 4.c4). I'm not sure whether this is due to a general shift in French fashions, or whether my opponents are playing like this specifically against me. |

<Beware of Geeks bearing Grifts> That's some bon mots if I ever heard them. So concise, in the best sense- there's nothing really more to say on that topic. Talk about your conversation killers!
Sadly, I fear our acolyte is on a mission from GHOD.
Tough to slow down these folks with Messianic Complexes. I hope you are well, old sod- it's been ages. You know I often think of something you said once, and I'm not exaggerating, I think about it all the time. You said something like "There's almost nothing worth getting your dander up over." I'm certain that's not what you actually said.
Do you remember?
What is a dander? I'd google it, but as <doggimus> once remarked, "googling is jejune." I don't know what jejune means either, but it seemed rude to google it in that context. I don't think you actually said dander.
Dander Freeman. He almost never gets *his* dander up. |
|
May-27-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Yanno, I'm not quite sure what a dander is either ... but if it's listed among the things that people get 'up', then it may be improper to talk about here. In case the Freeman Dander makes one of its rare vertical excursions. Jejune, on the other hand, is French for the act of being born in June. Not to be confused with Dismay. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> In Dublin slang, 'mot' means a young woman. So you're the original bon mot... |

I am gonna cross post this on OCF, too. |

 | | Domdaniel: <WannaBe> Weird Al Jankovich? A Mensch of the highest order ... a GrandMensch. Though I have some doubts about anyone who prefaces their name with 'Weird' ... where would we be with Weird Bob Dylan or Weird Paul Simon ... or even Weird Captain Beefheart, though it wouldn't be far wrong. Weird Frank Zappa, anyone? |

Found his chocks out of synch with his lander
So he turned on his tail
And rather than fail
Flipped his ailerons up to his dander." |

 | | OhioChessFan: <A suburban Philadelphia county was victim to an embarrassing misspelling on signage posted around the local community: the word "commissioners" with only one "m" on 26 signs. Montgomery County officials say it will take about 10 days and $4,000 to correct the error with adhesive labels.> http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/06/1... |
|
Jun-22-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> One of my favourite signage errors was a notice erected on a nearby seafront wall, advising the public that parking would no longer be possible "ass bollards are being erected..." My mother pointed this one out to me. And when the things were built - and, naturally, sat upon - she took great pleasure in referring to them as the "ass bollards". |

 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> Heh. Interesting, and a victory for the little guy-ess. For what it's worth, I think the Ohio woman's argument was sound ... but there's something dubious about the idea that failure to understand the law is a valid defense. OTOH, the law was badly worded. Didn't they used to say "Ignorance is no excuse" ... ? Or am I thinking of "He that killeth a man while drunk, sober shall he hang" ...? It's been a while since I studied law. No, I don't mean it was the 18th century.
Oh, never mind, happy 4th July. |

 | | Annie K.: <Dom: <At my advanced age, I've said everything at least twice.>> You can say *that* again... ;) |
|
Jul-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> Heh ... but, uh, if I *did* say it again, wouldn't that be four times? Leading us to an equation like
Vox = 2^n + h
(add variable h because original definition said 'at least' twice...) Now, this can be differentiated, giving us the rate of change of saying... |

 | | Domdaniel: Innaresting chess item, also, somehow, vaguely depressing. The 2015 Irish Championship ended in a tie between two FMs, Phillip Short and Stephen Brady - both in their 50s. Where are the young players? Where are the IMs? I beat Brady last time I played him, in the 1980s. And I drew with Short back in the late 70s, then lost a couple. While I'm pleased to see my generation still doing well, it's sad that no younger players are coming through. Either Short or Brady now qualifies for an Olympiad place - Short last played in 1986, Brady in 1996. |
|
Jul-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: According to the Irish Chess Union website:
<Phillip wins the automatic reserved place for the Irish champion on the Irish men’s team for the 2016 Olympiad with a better tiebreak. It has been 19 years since Stephen has played in an Olympiad anyway (Yerevan, Armenia 1996 being the last time) with Phillip last playing in the Dubai Olympiad 1986.> |

 | | Domdaniel: I played in a rapidplay one-day event last Saturday, despite being, by my own admission, a weakie at rapid rates of play: this was 15 mins with a 30 sec increment, I think. It was also a fundraiser for the Irish junior due to play in the world juniors. I won't mention any names, as I beat him in our game. After 5 rounds I had just one loss, to IM Alex Lopez, and was well in line for a prize ... but I tired and lost the final two games. Not so bad, though, and thanks to that good start all my opponents were pretty strong. Must try this rapido stuff again sometime: I'm hopeless at blitz, but rapid is different. |
