Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Jailer: "And how are our two hunger strikers this morning?"

moronovich: So kind of hegdecock variation ?

On a more serious note.
You asked for another opening than yourr beloved frrench,a while ago.

And here is one idea.1e4-c6.2.d4-d5.3.Nc3/d2-dxe4.4.Nxe4-and now Nf6(!).5.NxNf6-exf6(!).This is the tabya. For the price of the doubled f-pawn and
only 3 pawns vs 4 in the center, black
has an easy development:Bd6/0-0/Re8 and
N to d7 playing with going to e6 or g6.
Both bishops are in a way pointing at the white King(No bad french bishop:). Playing with the doubled f-pawn is not easy, but neither it is for the opponent! The last 2 games with this opening?
Nepo-Carlsen 0-1,rapidchess
Kajakin-Navarra 0-1 rapid as well.

So it was meant as an idea for thought and inspiration. And sometimes it can be so refreshing to get away from ones own welltrotten pattern.

All the best.

Sep-15-17  Boomie: <On a more serious note.>

That's allowed here? Who knew?

Domdaniel: <moronovich> - thanks for that. The Caro-Kann is something I toy with from time to time. I usually persuade myself that (a) White may get a dangerous kingside attack, (b) the Rubinstein French is just as good, and (c) Black has ideas in the French that improve on the CK.

That said, I suspect the Caro and French are close in overall potency - the French has maybe more lines.

Domdaniel: <Boomster> Of course it's allowed.

  Domdaniel: <moronovich> - your opening line reminds me a little of the Katalymov variation of the French -- 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2/c3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Qd5!? and then either 5.Bd3 Nf6 or 5.Nc3 Bb4.

I haven't played this seriously for years - I remember playing it repeatedly (without much success) against the then Irish champion Kernan in the 1970s, when we both played for the same university team.

I've tried it occasionally since, but it's the kind of opening that deserves to be refuted.

The inventor, Boris Katalymov, sprung it on Keres in the mid-60s ... and then tried it again about 35 years later.

Domdaniel: <moronovich> On further reflection, I see your Caro line is actually one that I sometimes play in casual games -- though I prefer 5...gxf6 to 5...exf6. This was a favourite idea of Larsen's, as I recall.

I just reckon that if Black is happy to play 4...Nf6, accepting an exchange of knights and doubled pawns, he may as well open the g-file and create a serious imbalance.

Domdaniel: When they say "Find your worst piece and improve it" they do *not* mean "pick it up off the floor and put it back on the board".
Sep-19-17  Boomie: <Domdaniel: When they say "Find your worst piece and improve it" they do *not* mean "pick it up off the floor and put it back on the board".>

I thought it meant "girl friend". People are always trying to improve their better halves.

W: DM (1407)
B: GM: (1812)

1.e4 e6
2.d4 d5
3.exd5 exd5
4.Bd3 Bd6
5.Ne2 Nc6
6.0-0 Nf6
7.c3 0-0
8.Bg5? Bxh2+!
9.Kh1 Bd6
10.Ng3 h6
11.Be3? Ng4!
12.Nf5 Bxf5
13.Bxf5 Qh4+
0-1.

My opponent was aged about 13 and rated in the 1400s ... am I a bully, or what?

Actually, he's better than this. Another year or so and I may not get the chance again...

Sep-23-17  Alien Math: nice game <Domdaniel> as for bully or not, by playing your best you give your opponent a chance to see what needs to be improved in their games, one of the benefits of playing above your rating (or theirs if they are the lower rating)

Domdaniel: Hi <Alien> and thanks. Yes, you're right - one should not ease up against younger players. Apart from everything else, they're unlikely to return the favour when they 'get good'.

  Domdaniel: <Ohio> Me too.

Where did you find that quote, if I may ask? I thought I was familiar with the main Duchamp sources - I have a book of his correspondence, and a biography, plus a couple of (deeply cryptic) art theory works...

In any case, not taking the world too seriously sounds like a good recipe ... and then I remember that Duchamp lived in the era of Hitler and Stalin ... and perhaps being flippant was not the ideal way of confronting their evil.
