Mariano Sana, Argentinian by birth, in the US since 1995. Naturalized US citizen. I hold a PhD in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania, and I am an associate professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University: https://as.vanderbilt.edu/sociology.... Previously, I was at Louisiana State University (2003-2009).

My published academic work can be seen here: https://vanderbilt.academia.edu/Mar.... My review of Gary Alan Fine's "Players and Pawns" is here: https://www.academia.edu/69647923/P....

My avatar comes from a cartoon of mine drawn by a friend. My username, besides the pasta, is my late cat's name (he died in March 2021, age 19), inspired by this cartoon: https://condenaststore.com/featured....

My first tournament was at age 12 in 1979. I finished 8th in the Argentine junior championship in 1985. So, I was good enough, but not great. (That same evaluation might still be apt today, on a good day.) Unfortunately, no game scores survived from those years. I started to play again after grad school. I play between 0 and 4 tournaments per year.

I won the Louisiana State Championship in 2007. I lost the first game and then won six in a row. This was my last round win, where I got lucky after playing the opening pretty terribly: J Rousselle vs M Sana, 2007.

I also won the under 2200 section of the US Open in 2014. Again, Swiss gambit. Lost the first one, then won five in a row, lost game 7 (M Sana vs J Sheng, 2014, a rather atypical game), and won games 8 and 9. My last round win was featured as a Tuesday puzzle: K Gulamali vs M Sana, 2014. (Try it! Black to play at move 29. But you can also do black to play at move 22 as a principled-move puzzle.)

I'd say that I am essentially a good but inconsistent player. My playing style is a mix of strategic and tactical. I'm usually very willing to sac a pawn or allow positional weaknesses in exchange for active piece play. For years I hovered around 2200, down to mid 2100s a few years ago after a disaster and a 50-point loss at the 2019 World Open. (Aging and MS fatigue had much to do with that.) On good days, I have had nice wins: T Bartell vs M Sana, 2009, R Burnett vs M Sana, 2012, M Sana vs C Blocker, 2014, M Sana vs R Burnett, 2015. But on a bad day, I can play horribly and lose against whoever is sitting in front of me.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2011, but it didn't cause me trouble until 2018/9. I have a weak right leg (I often use a cane now) and I fatigue easily. Medication, well-timed naps, and exercise help.

I play blitz games on chess.com under the username RealFusilli.

My participation on this website goes through ebbs and flows, and the majority of my posts are about chess. I often post on my own forum just to keep records for myself. Everyone is welcome to visit and share! (But please don't post about politics here.)

Fusilli: Back in the day, I would sometimes resign by picking up my king and placing it in front of my opponent. And one day I read that a GM (I think Sosonko) did the same thing, while saying, "here's, it's yours." So, sure, one for the crowd, why not.

SoƱar no cuesta nada!

Right now I'm just trying to get back up to 2200, since I managed to go down again. I'm playing the finals of the Nashville city championship this weekend. I'm rated fifth out of six players. It's a round robin. I'm looking forward to it.

Fusilli: Thanks! I have played against four of my five opponents before, with mixed results: IM Ronald Burnett (+1 =1 -1), FM Todd D Andrews (=1 -2), David Justice (+1 =1) and Ezad Elezaj (-1). The sixth contender is a kid in the 1900s. I assume he is getting better, as kids do.
Dec-31-14  WinKing: <Fusilli: Best wishes for 2015, Greg!>

Hey Happy New Year Mariano! I see that you have a tournament coming up. Good luck in Nashville this weekend. Hope you have a lot of good games that we can look at when it's over. :)

Dec-31-14  morfishine: <Fusilli> Best wishes to you sir! Please, post some of your games here at <CG>. I think there is a core interest in active play and players here at <CG>. I for one am keenly interested in such things. To a great 2015! morf

Jan-15-15  Shams: <Fusilli> Are you still playing this line as Black? H Itkis vs M Sana, 2011

What do you think of White's scheme against it in this game? Sakaev vs Savon, 1992

Fusilli: <Shams> Well... not that it was really part of my repertoire. The problem is, I don't have a defined repertoire! In that game with Itkis, she missed a few opportunities to get clear advantage. Those two games you listed are bad beatings, enough to dissuade someone from playing that line with black! On the other hand, there is Seirawan vs Ulf Andersson, 1983.
Jan-19-15  WinKing: Hi <Fusilli> I have been looking at your games from the Nashville Championship. Some entertaining games! Your game against David Justice caught my attention. I've always had a fondness for the Pirc. Your game with him went:

< 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.g3 c6 5.Bg2 Nbd7 6.Nge2 e5 7.O-O Bg7 8.h3 O-O 9.Be3 exd4 10.Bxd4>

This position can be found in our opening explorer reached by transposition: Opening Explorer

10...Re8 looks natural here but you played 10...b5. I have never seen this move & I find it very interesting. Have you played this before or is it in some opening book somewhere? Your opponent responded 11.Be3 which I think was a slight concession in the position. I think 11.a3 is a little better. After < 10...b5 11.Be3 b4 12.Nb1 > which was played in your game we have this:

Here you played 12...Qc7 which is definitely ok but did you consider 12...Nxe4!? here? Play gets very interesting.

Maybe 12...Nxe4 13.Bxe4 d5 14.Bg2 Bxb2

...then perhaps 15.Nd2 Bxa1 16.Qxa1

Black has two pawns & a rook for bishop & knight. Not sure if it is really that good as I hate to give the opponent the Bishop pair. Would need some testing.

I always enjoy playing over your games <Fusilli>.

Fusilli: <Winking> Thanks for stopping by!

I had played David Justice twice before, both times with the black pieces, and both games were Scotch games. I did not want to play a Scotch game again, as I've been having trouble playing the black side of the Scotch. (I lost my first game at the US Open in Orlando last summer playing the black side of the Scotch against a much lower rated player... I think that got me a little traumatized!) So, I played the Pirc, which was an old tool in my repertoire. All this to say that I have not studied the Pirc lately, so I was unaware whether what I was playing was correct.

You are right that 11.a3 was at least a natural move. Honestly, I don't know if I considered Nxe4, but it is not the kind of move that goes with my temperament. I'd be very reluctant to part with my black squared bishop, worried about the subsequent dark-squared weakness, especially as White keeps his own dark-squared bishop.

But what I do remember is that when I ran the game by Stockfish, the computer suggested ...d5. Frankly, I don't remember if it suggested it right away as move 12, but it was for sure before my own 15...d5, which came a bit too late, when the pawn is going to be subject to too much pressure. The strategic point is that the pawn in d5 makes it more difficult for the knight that just retreated to b1 to come back into play actively, since its jumps from d2 will be controlled by the d5 pawn. Black can probably send the knight to b6 and think twice about where the queen should be. (BTW, I'm pretty sure that 12...d5 13.exd5 cxd5 14.Bxd5 Nxd5 15.Qxd5 is bad for white. Either 15...Nb6 or 15...Ba6 seem to be good, but I am not looking at the board or running it by the computer. Notice that white has to control b2 and maybe loses the h3.)

The way I played, I ended up in trouble. I don't think 12...Qc7 was accurate. But there was no need for David to get into 26.Qxd7. Instead, 26.Qa3 keeps the pressure and black is uncomfortable.

  Fusilli: <Mating Net> That's easy... Boca!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boca_J...

That Santiago Sana named there was my grandfather. The founders were all teenagers at the time. Baglietto was the only adult. Later, my grandpa was president of Boca twice, before the era of professionalization that started roughly around 1930.

My father didn't care about soccer at all, and we lived far from the club, so I never got involved with Boca in any way. One of my uncles ran for president of the club twice (defeated both times by Alberto J. Armando (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert...), who had the approval of Peron. Currently I have a cousin who is on the club's women's soccer committee. On my last visit to Argentina she took me to the club to meet some of the officialdom at a small event. They treated me like royalty!

Feb-10-15  Mating Net: That's great! I was hoping you were a Boca man, but I had no idea you were club royalty. Must be why you are so good at the royal game.
