I live in Stredokluky (a village near Prague, Czech republic). I play both practical and correspondence chess. My rating in practical chess (Czech national ELO) oscillates somewhere between 2010 and 2060, in correspondence chess I have rating 2155 (my best was 2220 in the middle of 90's). I have no special favorite player but I like to view good games of old masters (Tarrasch, Schlechter, Chigorin etc.)

   Jan-02-26 N Theodorou vs L Dominguez Perez, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 37.Rb7! was a lovely shot. But black's position was already precarious anyway. For example, 36...f6 37.Qg3 Rc6 38.h6 Qe7 39.Nxe6 +-, or 36...Nf5 37.Bxf5 exf5 38.h6 f6 39.Qg3 Rb8 40.Nd7!! +-

   Jan-02-26 A Elo vs Fischer, 1957

Honza Cervenka: 42.c4 was absolutely incomprehensible move giving black practical chance to play for win. 46.Kg3 was decisive mistake but it was just a logical consequence of the bad decision made four moves earlier.

   Jan-02-26 Goutham Krishna H vs M A Tabatabaei, 2025 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: 30...Bxc4 was necessary. Black was badly spanked for his too passive approach to this game.

   Dec-29-25 K Tsarouhas vs X Mastalerz, 2016 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: <goodevans><I reckon Black actually played <58...Rf4?>> It looks quite plausible. And the continuation making most sense could be 58...Rf4 59.h7 Kg7 60.h8=Q+ Kxh8 61.Kg6 Kg8 62.c6 Rf2 63.c7 Rg2+ 64.Kf6 Rc2 65.Rxa2 Rc6+ 66.Kg5 Rxc7 etc. In this line 61.Kg6 ...

   Dec-27-25 Schlechter vs J Bendiner, 1893 (replies)

Honza Cervenka: This is one of those mating attacks, which is played by itself. Instead of 23.Rxh5 I was considering more prosaic 23.e6 Qf8 24.Qe4, which practically forces 24...Qf5 25.Qxf5 Nxf5 26.Bxf5 with decisive advantage of white but Schlechter's solution led to a forced mate.

   Dec-18-25 Jansa vs Suetin, 1974

Honza Cervenka: 23.Qd1 with intention 23...Rac8 24.Ne4 would have been better. In the game 24.Ne4 allows 24...Nxe4! with idea 25.Bxd8 Rc1+ 26.Rf1 Nf2+ 27.Kg1 Nxd3+ 28.Bxb6 Kf8 ⩱

   Dec-18-25 Jansa vs Smyslov, 1974

Honza Cervenka: 21.h4 and double trade on f5 led to deadly attack of black. 21.c4 followed by 22.Ra3 was the best way to meet Smyslov's planned 21...f5.

   Dec-15-25 Velimirovic vs G Tringov, 1971

Honza Cervenka: Quite sad end for black Rook.

   Dec-04-25 P Szakolczai vs M Donko, 1990

Honza Cervenka: I guess that the result should be rather 1-0 here. At least, 32.Rc2+ Kb7 33.Rxd5 Rxd5 34.Rc7+ Ka8 35.Bxe4 leads to a forced mate, for example 35...Re8 36.Rc8+ Rxc8 37.Bxd5+ Rc6 38.Bxc6#.

   Dec-04-25 E Gereben vs O Troianescu, 1952

Honza Cervenka: If 19...h5(?), then 20.Ngf6+! +-

Honza Cervenka: <SwitchingQuylthulg: <Benzol> I suspect Aneta's prize will be a new vote against other winning babies. ;-)> That's correct guess. Babies of week are voted again in babies of month polls and winners of those polls are once again voted in final baby of the year contest. The first three babies of last year's poll got some toys from a toy-shop firm sponsoring this event but as far as I know there is no official prize in this contest. Personally I hope that my wife will be satisfied with "baby of the week" title as another round of hour by hour night voting would surely kill me...:-)))
Mar-25-10  chesstoplay: Vote # 1053

When is the contest over?

I'll try to keep voting.

Best of luck to you and, especially, your wife.

Just let us all know early. A good start at the outset of the contest might get the others discouraged.
