<MissScarlett> I thought about you this morning for another reason- I stumbled upon a book whilst researching Vladimir Fedorovich Ostrogsky and it features extensive information on <Pillsbury> blindfold play, including a robust list of game scores.

At any rate they are offering a free pdf download of the book here:

Hmm the owner of the "web service" is not shy about letting folks know who he is. He offers a wide (and exceedingly incongruous) list of books, or "stories" as he calls them, and gives contact details:

MissScarlett: I've seen some of that book via Google Books. On Pillsbury, I prefer to wait for Pope's book. That'll mean another 500 games on the queue.

  jessicafischerqueen:

<MissScarlett> Yes, we all await The Pope to be sure. I have no doubt the work will be stellar.

In the meantime, I've been perusing the book. It features a very large number of Blind Simul game scores from <Pillsbury>, <Reti>, and many others, including the perhaps overly ambitious Vladimir Fedorovich Ostrogsky .

It seems he *did* break Pillsbury's world blindfold seance record, when he was but a Category 2 player.

However, his results in his record breaking seance were arguably less than stellar. In addition, he didn't play "23" opponents- many of his opponents played 2-4 boards against him. So he really played against 10 different people, not 23, scoring 58.7%

To be fair, we are told that most of his opponents were Category 1 strength.

Did you find out how the editor page produced a duplicate game, one with patronymic and one without?

On related news, the editor page will not parse any foreign accents at all.

FSR chessforum (kibitz #2783)

So if you process this game currently in your box:

[Event "Bad Wrishofen Open t"]
[Site "Bad Wrishofen GER"]
[Date "1994.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Eckhard Schmittdiel"]
[Black "Julian Michael Hodgson"]
[Result "0-1"]
[Source "Chess Monthly, July 1994, p.10"]
[PlyCount "78"]

1.e4 c5 2.c3 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.d4 e5 5.Nf3 cxd4 6.cxd4 Nc6 7.Nc3 Bb4 8.Bd2 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 e4 10.Ne5 Nxe5 11.dxe5 Ne7 12.Qe2 O-O 13.Rd1 Qc6 14.Rd6 Qa4 15.b3 Qa3 16.Qd2 Qc5 17.Bc4 Be6 18.Rd4 Nf5 19.Rxe4 Rfd8 20.Qb2 Qc6 21.f3 Qc5 22.Ke2 Bd5 23.Bxd5 Qxd5 24.Rc1 Rac8 25.Be1 Qb5+ 26.Kf2 Qb6+ 27.Ke2 Qh6 28.Rxc8 Rxc8 29.h4 Qa6+ 30.Kf2 Qb6+ 31.Ke2 Qg1 32.Bf2 Qxg2 33.Rg4 Qh2 34. Kd3 h5 35.Rg5 Qf4 36.Qe2 Qc1 37.Ke4 g6 38.Qd3 Re8 39.Qc4 Nd6+ 0-1

Then the (#65533) will get even uglier, looking something like this <> in the published game header.

I had to fix that ex post facto for FSR.

So no foreign accent marks at all. Only Roman alphabet letters.

<Good evening>

I wonder if you know how to get the "official correspondence type" in the published game header?

I just uploaded this correspondence game with the following tags:

[Event "BCM Corr prelim-02"]
[Site "United Kingdom"]
[Date "1908.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[Result "0-1"]
[White "William Timbrell Pierce"]
[Black "Fred Dewhirst Yates"]
[Source "Quarterly for Chess History (Dec. 2004) p.223"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. d4 exd4 4. Qxd4 Nc6 5. Qe3 Be7 6. Bd2 O-O 7. O-O-O d5 8. Nxd5 Nxd5 9. exd5 Qxd5 10. Bc3 Qxa2 11. Qg3 g6 12. Qf4 Bf5 13. Nf3 Rfd8 14. Bd3 b5 15. g4 Bxd3 16. cxd3 b4 17. Be5 Rd5 18. d4 Rad8 19. Rhe1 Na5 20. Bxc7 Nc4 21. Kc2 Bg5 0-1

W T Pierce vs Yates, 1908

You can see that the game type in italics does not appear in the published header.

So my question is = is there a special "game type tag" and what is the syntax of it?

Example a tag that looks like this:

[GameType "Correspondence"]

MissScarlett: <So my question is = is there a special "game type tag" and what is the syntax of it?>

I believe there must be an algorithm or whatever it's called which assigns game type. I'd assumed it was set by the admin who uploaded it, but when I've uploaded games with blitz in the event field, it recognises it and lists the game type as blitz. So I would assume it recognises <corr>, <rapid> and variations thereof. The default would be classical.

Stonehenge: After uploading a game it says <This game needs to have its gametype assigned.> for a while. It takes a few hours or so.

Other similar software doesn't work.

For example Carlsen vs A Diamant, 2003.

I've changed the ECO code in November but it still says <Scotch Game: General>.

Also, after changing a player's name I don't think it gets updated in the PGNs.

<Stonehenge> Where does it say <This game needs to have its gametype assigned>? I have never noticed that.

If I do notice it, how do I "assign the gametype"?

Jan-17-21
Premium Chessgames Member
Stonehenge: Where it normally says <This game is type:>, under the kibitzing area.

As long as it says <<This game needs to have its gametype assigned.> you don't assign the gametype.

When it's finished and it has assigned the wrong gametype, you can submit a correction slip.

  jessicafischerqueen:

Aha! Ok thanks <Stonehenge>. I believe I understand now.

So I see that the game type has indeed appeared in the header of this game: W T Pierce vs Yates, 1908

It just takes a while to process I guess.

No, but you could do it manually.

<Good Evening>

I put this here because I'm not sure I want to put any noise on Sultan Khan vs R N Coles, 1929 .

Just this evening my copy of Daniel King's new biography of <Sultan Khan> arrived, and I'm still reading the first chapter on the "All-India championship" in Dehli 1929. I just skimmed a bit more after reading your post, but I didn't see anything about <R.N Coles> or "Hybern." There might be something in there though.

This is a good point:

Biographer Bistro (kibitz #21591)

I will switch the tags out to put "-" in, but I would prefer to type out the word "match."

Anyways I will do this on <Sultan Khan> and <Atkins> pages.

<Good Evening>

I finished converting the <Sultan Khan> match games to this format now:

<Scarlettborough - Zanzibore m>

I was just going on to the <Henry ? Atkins> page to convert the match game notations when I noticed this:

Henry Atkins

Henry Atkins

I am certain you will figure something out. What about an international law to prevent people from naming their nobody children after world historical chess masters? Might be the simplest solution.

Anyways.

I'm glad you, and now also <Stonehenge>, are taking point on rationalizing our player names.

Long overdue.

MissScarlett: As with the various <Max Lange>s (helpfully there's also a <Maxwell Lange>), I think we need to just suck it up and accept that duplication exists as to names as well as games. Need we employ middle names or initials to differentiate them? I'm not so sure.
Jan-28-21  Z4all: <I'm not so sure.>

Of course you're not, for your purposes things are just ducky, ducky.
