| Apr-08-12 | | MarkFinan: <OCF> Just keep pushing the white pawn surely?? I haven't had a really good look, but the pawn can only stop being promoted with black being forced to sac a Rook and the Bishop follows (the Bishop cant stop whites pawn as g8's a light square!), and white can stop both blacks pawns with his king, forcing a R+K v R+K draw?? |

 | | OhioChessFan: I have been playing this over and wonder if the puzzle is totally cooked. The solution posted only considered 2 replies to the obvious 1. g7 The first is 1. g7 Rf1+ 2. Rxf1 Rg4 3. Kxd2 and White easily draws R vs R + Rook Pawn. I found the interesting 1...Be3 2. g8Q Bxg1 3. Qxg1 Rff4 4. Qg7+ Kd6 5. Qxa7
and I think White still has work to do, though if the White Queen starts checking I don't know where the Black King can hide. I suspect the tablebase says it's a draw.
click for larger viewThe proposed solution starts
1. g7 Rg4 2. Rxg4 Bc3 and is the real point of the puzzle. I am looking at the proposed line for Black there and think Black might still have a win. |

Says God Made the World as a Space for Knowledge and Truth> VATICAN CITY, APRIL 8, 2012> Benedict XVI welcomed Easter at Saturday night's vigil with a reflection on the meaning of the creation of light, which "means that God created the world as a space for knowledge and truth, as a space for encounter and freedom, as a space for good and for love.">During his homily at the Holy Saturday Mass, the Pope spoke of the liturgy's presentation of creation: "Easter Day ushers in a new creation, but that is precisely why the Church starts the liturgy on this day with the old creation, so that we can learn to understand the new one aright."> Referring to the first reading that provides Genesis' account of creation, he emphasized two elements as especially important: "On the one hand, creation is presented as a whole that includes the phenomenon of time. The seven days are an image of completeness, unfolding in time. They are ordered towards the seventh day, the day of the freedom of all creatures for God and for one another. Creation is therefore directed towards the coming together of God and his creatures; it exists so as to open up a space for the response to God’s great glory, an encounter between love and freedom.> "On the other hand, what the Church hears on Easter night is above all the first element of the creation account: 'God said, "let there be light!"' The creation account begins symbolically with the creation of light. The sun and the moon are created only on the fourth day. The creation account calls them lights, set by God in the firmament of heaven. In this way he deliberately takes away the divine character that the great religions had assigned to them. No, they are not gods. They are shining bodies created by the one God. But they are preceded by the light through which God’s glory is reflected in the essence of the created being."> The Holy Father proposed that the meaning of this is that "light makes life possible. It makes encounter possible. It makes communication possible. It makes knowledge, access to reality and to truth, possible. And insofar as it makes knowledge possible, it makes freedom and progress possible. Evil hides. Light, then, is also an expression of the good that both is and creates brightness. It is daylight, which makes it possible for us to act. To say that God created light means that God created the world as a space for knowledge and truth, as a space for encounter and freedom, as a space for good and for love. Matter is fundamentally good, being itself is good. And evil does not come from God-made being, rather, it comes into existence only through denial. It is a 'no.'"> Beginning anew>
Easter is a re-creation, a time for God to say again, "Let there be light," the Pope said.> "Now it is the first day once again – creation is beginning anew," he reflected. "'Let there be light,' says God, 'and there was light': Jesus rises from the grave. Life is stronger than death. Good is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Truth is stronger than lies. The darkness of the previous days is driven away the moment Jesus rises from the grave and himself becomes God’s pure light."> The Holy Father affirmed that this applies not only to the darkness of those days, but means that "light itself is created anew."> "He draws all of us after him into the new light of the resurrection and he conquers all darkness. He is God’s new day, new for all of us."> Changing our lives>
Benedict XVI did not give a homily at this morning's Mass, but at the noontime blessing "urbi et orbi," he continued his reflection on the meaning of Easter.> "Every Christian relives the experience of Mary Magdalene," he said. "It involves an encounter which changes our lives: the encounter with a unique Man who lets us experience all God’s goodness and truth, who frees us from evil not in a superficial and fleeting way, but sets us free radically, heals us completely and restores our dignity. This is why Mary Magdalene calls Jesus 'my hope': he was the one who allowed her to be reborn, who gave her a new future, a life of goodness and freedom from evil. 'Christ my hope' means that all my yearnings for goodness find in him a real possibility of fulfilment: with him I can hope for a life that is good, full and eternal, for God himself has drawn near to us, even sharing our humanity."> After the blessing, the Pope sent Easter greetings to the whole world in 65 languages.> |

Whilst painting eggs and hunting for chocolate, we will learn what painting eggs and hunting for chocolate has to do with the Resurrection. Good heavens.

| Apr-16-12 | | goldenbear: I just found out about all the dramatic happenings around here... care to fill me in <OCF>? What happened? Why were people banned? Was there some kind of "last straw" incident? What's your opinion on all this? I want some juicy gossip. I read your comment on <Benzol>'s page and I'm also one to not criticize <AJ> too much for his ridiculousnous. Don't get me wrong, <AJ>'s some kind of crazy, but knowing that, as anyone should, why provoke him? Here's a timely favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ0H... |

 | | OhioChessFan: <What happened?>
What happened was the 2 sides in the AJ vs. the World dustup kept on keeping on to the point that Chessgames.com felt they had to take action. <Why were people banned?> Previous admonitions hadn't worked. CG.C had to something. That was painfully obvious. <Was there some kind of "last straw" incident? > I don't think there was a last staw incident. I do think a number of respected old timers made clear they had had enough and were threatening to cancel paid memberships that CG.C paid attention. <What's your opinion on all this? > I am not a trained mental health professional so I won't offer a diagnosis of AJ. I think I'm on safe ground affirming his behavior is not rational. I am amazed a group of adults finds pleasure/humor provoking an irrational person into poor behavior. I think The Troop is a bunch of childish punks and think they should be embarrassed of their behavior. I was so tired of it, I had given serious thought to leaving the site forever. <Don't get me wrong, <AJ>'s some kind of crazy, but knowing that, as anyone should, why provoke him? > Bingo. |
|
| Apr-16-12 | | goldenbear: I see. Well, one of the things I like about this site is that there are so many different pages in which to discuss, that it's possible for people to form their own cliches. What I hate is when that spills over in to pages it shouldn't belong, particularly games pages. It's one thing to be a annoying on the Ken Rogoff page and another to be a rude on the latest Carlsen game page. There ARE a lot of crazies around here (when the mood strikes me, I am one of them), but as far as the internet goes, this is still the best site around in terms of the people. Incidentally, I've never used the "ignore" button and I forget exactly who has me on ignore, but I believe there are several. |
|
Apr-17-12
 | | OhioChessFan: There's any number of points that irritate me. The AJ Wars was the worst. But the people who spam the Kasparov/Fishcer/Carlsen pages with endless arguments about who was the best ever is a close second. I'm not quite sure what is in it for them, even if they <did> persuade the other side is right. Great, one more person thinks Fischer is the best ever after I've spent a few thousand hours persuading them. Maybe they think the same about the Rogoff page, though the political opinions of others <does> impact my life whereas opinions on Kasparov do not. I use the ignore at times and then take them off. I know a few have me on ignore. I am shocked whiteshark has me on ignore and have no idea why. I don't care, but it is a bit of a mystery to me. |
|
| Apr-17-12 | | goldenbear: <the people who spam the Kasparov/Fishcer/Carlsen pages> Yeah, that's the second most annoying thing. <I am shocked <whiteshark> has me on ignore> That shocks me too. I like <whiteshark>. That's like when I found out <acirce> had me on ignore. I don't think I had ever spoken to him before. |

| Apr-17-12 | | Jim Bartle: "I am not a trained mental health professional so I won't offer a diagnosis of AJ. I think I'm on safe ground affirming his behavior is not rational. I am amazed a group of adults finds pleasure/humor provoking an irrational person into poor behavior. I think The Troop is a bunch of childish punks and think they should be embarrassed of their behavior. I was so tired of it, I had given serious thought to leaving the site forever." I agree with that. I was a person who argued with AJ quite a bit, though I think it was about issues, not just bothering him in order to provoke him. A particular issue was his playing on to mate against Tkachiev when he was a piece down without counterplay for the last twenty-five moves. AJ does silly things, aggradizing himself, but all in all fairly innocent. "The Troop" seemed to take delight in tormenting him and provoking even more angry and insulting replies. I think the reason for the suspensions was that the spats spilled over onto game pages (not AJ games) and player pages (not just AJ's). It didn't bother others when it was just on the comments for AJ games and on his forum and player page. But when they intruded into other areas it bothered a lot of people. The unending and repetitive arguing on the Carlsen, Nakamura, Kasparov, etc. pages is silly and irritating, and for once I've decided not to get involved beyond a sarcastic comment now and then. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I agree <JB> that the spillover onto player and game pages was the real catalyst. |
