<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

OhioChessFan: Hey <TCE> I am hanging on to employment, barely. I became eligible to retire in March, and can't quite pull the trigger. I'm not sure why, but I guess it's mostly inertia.

I've had some half hearted attempts to play chess, but my utter incapacity to visualize leaves me frustrated. The ability to play a game blindfold, which I've been told isn't that tough for a 2000, is so far beyond my hopes that I realize that zero visualization skills is a permananent and unsurmountable barrier to improvement. That leaves me in the realm of correspondence chess, which is all engines anyway, or team chess, where I can still suggest ideas and big picture plans, and let someone else work out the details. cg.c has hinted a team game is coming up, but no details. I was surprised at their recent claim that GM vs Team chess is yesterday's news and not to expect it any more.

How are things with you?

Jun-12-17  The Chess Express: I went down to the club awhile back. It was embarrassing. I lost to a 1600 with the white pieces. I've been out of the game for so long it's scary how much I've lost. I'm trying to get back into it. We'll see how it goes. I've revamped my repertoire. I'm now a 1. Nf3 player. I usually try to get a reversed Benoni or Benko or something. I tried that correspondence chess. Yeah, I was doing well until I started playing 2000-2100 players. After analyzing the games I'm 99% sure they were using programs to suggest moves.

Recently I've gotten into truck driving. It's fun, but it keeps me away for long stretches. I plan on doing it for a few years and then retire as well. The way things are going I'm not sure how much longer we have before a major collapse happens. I'd like to enjoy whatever time we have while things are still going good. Anyway, I hope your employment situation works out for you.

OhioChessFan: d4 with White. Apparently there's a new rule that 1...Nf6 is required, so I know what to expect. QGA and Caro-Kann with Black. A simple repetoire, but it works for me. It's ridiculous how unpreparted most people are and you can pretty much bust out 10 moves without thinking. Anyway, since I can't see tactical shots, I have to play positional openings.

If you play a few games, you'll stop losing White games to 1600s. Although obviously a club player at that level knows how to play the game, so no shame in them beating you.

I tell everyone I can that truck driving is a permanent guarantee of steady work. I am considering doing a little in my retirement. It's not for everyone, but it's easy pickings for the person wanting employment.

Jun-12-17  WinKing: Tomorrow, Tues. 6/13, is a rest day for the players of the Altibox Norway tournament. No games are scheduled. Play will resume(Round 7) on Wed. 6/14.
Jun-12-17  The Chess Express: I like the QGA. It gives black natural development. Do you play the 4. e3 Bg4 line? The Caro-Kann does to, but I'm uncomfortable playing against the advanced variation. For black I'm building a repertoire around e6. I usually get into a Nimzo-Dutch hybrid or a French. The downside is lower rated players sometimes play the exchange against me.

If you decide to get into trucking give me a shout. I can save you some grief. If you're just starting you've got to be careful what company you go with. A lot of training companies screw the rookies.

"OhioChessFan: Hmmm. Just discovered I'm on <ketchuplover's> ignore list."

How can you tell?

Jun-12-17  Big Pawn: < The Caro-Kann does to, but I'm uncomfortable playing against the advanced variation.>

Why is that?

Jun-12-17  diceman: <OhioChessFan: Hmmm.

Just discovered I'm on <ketchuplover's> ignore list.>

Does that make you "Mean Mr. Mustard?"

Jun-12-17  The Chess Express: <Big Pawn> Positions like these seem better for white to me.

where white plays a4 and attacks on the queenside.

Jun-12-17  diceman: <The Chess Express:

I love that stuff.

<The Caro-Kann does to, but I'm uncomfortable playing against the advanced variation.>

If I knew they would play the advance, I would play the caro.(you get the queen bishop out of the pawn chain)

<I'm now a 1. Nf3 player.>

I played 1.c4 for decades.
Later switched to 1.Nf3.
I would play 2.b3, and try and get into
nimzo-dutch reversed.

Like Fischer did against Mecking,
getting into a Birds formation.

Jun-12-17  Big Pawn: <the chess express>, thank you for that detailed answer. I play the French and the positions are similar. I used to play the advance caro with white but switched to 3. Nc3 because I felt black was solid and comfortable against the advance.

Years ago I read the Tal vs Botvinnik wcc book, written by Tal (first championship) and there were a few caro kann's, Tal playing white, that were wonderfully annotated. Botvinnik apparently played it very well.

Jun-12-17  Big Pawn: <The downside is lower rated players sometimes play the exchange against me.>

I've played many thousands of blitz games over the years on Fics and elsewhere. Once in a while I will browse through my stats. I've come to realize that my best results are from the exchange French.

I almost always castle queenside, play f6, g5, h5, h4 and set up g4. On my queenside I play kb8, nd8!, re8 and it slows down whites attack nicely, giving me a somewhat freer hand on the other side of the board.

When I play ...Bf5 in the opening (usually move 7), I never capture on d3. I let white capture me, bringing my pieces to his kingside with tempo. If I can get rooks to h8 and g8 I'm happy.

If white plays h3 in the early middle game and my bishop is on d6 with queen on d7 and ne7, I will sac on h3 for two pawn and swing the knight to g6 and h4, often winning.

  OhioChessFan: ** Round 6 Recap **

<sea otter> had a strong round to move onto the medal podium in all 4 Rankers, including a tie for the lead in #1 Ranker. <WinKing> is very quietly leading/tied for the lead in all 4 Rankers. <Switch> is continuing a furious battle, as he is tied for the lead in 2 Rankers and second in another. <Penguincw> and <wordfunph> continue in the shared lead of #1 Ranker. <chessmoron> and <GE> still don't have a #1 prediction.

<GE> expressed his great dismay that playing the game of chess was actually in evidence on this forum and demanded a day off for our contest. The tournament officials agreed, so we hope to get all this chess talk out of the way and let people concentrate on their predictions again.

Can <WinKing> realize his dreams of a Quadruple Crown? Will <Switch> make a move himself? Can <sea otter> or <Penguincw> or <wordfunph> steal the gold medal in #1 Ranker? Will <GE> and <chessmoron> ever hit a #1 prediction? Stay tuned for the answers to these and many more exciting questions. Only 3 rounds to go.

Jun-12-17  The Chess Express: <diceman> I'll sometimes try a Larsen attack after 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. e3 d5 3. b3 I like this move order better than 1. b3 because it avoids the ... e5, ... d5, ... f6 setup.

Jun-12-17  The Chess Express: <Big Pawn> I guess it's preference really. I like white's extra space in the advanced. Thanks for all the pointers in the exchange. I'm just getting into the French, so it's all helpful. I've been trying an early c5 with mixed results. Your methods sound interesting. I'll have a look.

OhioChessFan: <DomDaniel> is probably the strongest French proponent on the site and I'm sure he'd be happy to discuss it with you. No question c5 at the right time is the key to Black's success.

Of course there are many positional similarities in the French and Caro-Kann. I'm mostly serious when I say that the French grinds me down because I have to consider that White might play BxP+ every single move and I am always afraid I'm missing the possibility.
