Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Penguincw: The home team of an NL WC game has not scored a run in 29 innings! 18 by MadBum.

Giants win, but would be nice if they stop winning right about now. Although a Dodgers-Giants NLCS would be something to see. Can't believe these 2 teams have never met in the postseason (minus the 1889 WS and 1951 tiebreaker), although the way the postseason has been set for decades definitely discouraged it.

WannaBe: MadBum, complete game, 0R 0ER 120 pitches. But he probably won't face Cubs Monday at the earliest. Tuesday for game 4 of NL Division Series is the best possibility.

Which means, the Wild Card caused Giants to burn their #1, and can't use him for 2 games in the next series.

< Which means, the Wild Card caused Giants to burn their #1, and can't use him for 2 games in the next series. >

That's kinda the point. The Jays however, use their 3 strongest pitchers (Estrada, Happ, Sanchez) in the weekend series vs. Boston, so resorted to #4 guy Stroman in the WC game, and won, so they'll have their top 3 guys ready to go for the ALDS.

However, the matchups for the first 3 games in CHC-SF look to be Lester vs. Cueto, Hendricks vs. Samardzija and Arrieta vs. MadBum. Wouldn't really say the extra game gives a team a huge disadvantage.

saffuna: Yesterday I read two stories that said that Rivera may have run the Mets out of a run last night. He was on second and tried to go to third on a grounder to short. He got caught in a rundown and was eventually tagged out.

But the batter made it to second during the rundown. So the situation was exactly the same as if he'd just gone back to second, right?

Penguincw: Woo, Jays head home up 2-0 on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.

But of course, last year Rangers won the first 2 games on the road before blowing it. Hopefully Jays won't do the same.

Jays tomorrow will have the AL ERA leader, Aaron Sanchez (15-2, 3.00) on the mound.

Rangers, they don't have many great options. I also wouldn't be surprised if they bring in Hamels on short rest and Darvish for Game 4 and 5, if necessary.

Penguincw: Uh oh, BOS falls behind CLE 2-0 in the series (I had another bet with that friend, and looks like I'm about to lose my quarter). Would be something though if CHC and CLE, the 2 MLB teams with the longest World Series championship droughts, meet up in the World Series.

Dodgers also beat the Nats, yay.

Oct-08-16  Travis Bickle: Holy Cow! 1 swing of the bat by Cubs 2nd baseman Baez crushed into the teeth of the wind & it still got of here! Cubs Win Holy Cow!! http://m.mlb.com/player/595879/javi...

saffuna: Giants pitchers have given up seven hits and one run in 18 innings in the postseason, yet they're 1-1.

Baez absolutely blasted that ball, but the wind almost kept it in the park. He didn't run at all, assuming it was out, but it only made it by about a foot, Landing in the netting.

Giants only have three runs in two games, and that on a single home run. Need to start hitting the ball.

Oct-08-16  Travis Bickle: <saffuna> I don't either side hit much because of the way Cueto & Lester were dominating the hitters.

I can't believe the way Baez really crushed that ball it barely made it out.. He has tremendous power as in batting practice he has actually hit the scoreboard in centerfield!

Penguincw: < WannaBe: LAD @ WAS postponed to Sunday. >

Almost as worse is if the game manages to stretch deep into extra innings (just like 2014 NLDS G2). Sucks that they have to play a game and then travel across the country and play the very next night.

---

I also just realized the Cubs played a Friday night home game yesterday. The last time they did so I believe was Game 3 of the 2003 NLDS. Hmm, Cubs 2003...
