Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Apology accepted. I was born in Arkansas. But, to tell the truth, I didn't even know Bobby Petrino was the coach.
Apr-10-12  playground player: <Phony Benoni> OK, here is my move #20 for the Pietrzack-Posthoff game which you posted on my forum, challenging me to "find the crusher." I grappled with it all night--I hate to play when there's a clock involved--and finally came up with...

20.Bf6

If this is wrong, don't tell me what the right move--I'll try again.

If this game ever gets to be the Game of the Day, my suggested pun is "The Posthoff is Closed."

Apr-10-12  King Death: Jim McMhon makes the news today and he may be there for awhile.

Apr-10-12  Jim Bartle: I'll bet McMahon never paid the slightest attention to the bank's activities.
Apr-10-12  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Hooray! I found the move! Thanks for a most entertaining puzzle.
Apr-10-12  Shams: Jim McMahon's memory is just about shot. I think he'd be a poor choice for a co-conspirator.

WannaBe: Looks like I get to watch the Dodgers and Rockies play on May Day, in Denver... Two tix for $27 bucks, super nosebleed!
Apr-10-12  Jim Bartle: I thought behind the dugout was nosebleed in Denver.

  WannaBe: Poll at Yahoo.com

<Did Ozzie Guillen deserve suspension for his Fidel Castro remarks?

Yes, they were out of line. 32%

No, he's entitled to his opinion. 68%

I voted for 'No'.

Apr-11-12  King Death: Guillen sure is entitled to his opinion but he's a moron. Why in Miami of all places would he say stuff like that?
Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: Deadly PR for any Miami team to say "I like Fidel Castro and his beard." Maybe even so bad that a winning team won't overcome it.

WannaBe: Another blown save, as the Rays score 2 to tie the game at the top of the 9th...
Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: Not really a blown save, as Verlander let in the tying runs...

So hindsight is better than 20/20. But Verlander had gone eight scoreless, then loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Threw a wild pitch. Still in. Gave up a single, finally taken out.

But it's early in the seaason. Maybe they're trying the old Earl Weaver routine, where he'd wouldn't mind if his best pitchers get roughed up in April and May. He knew they'd be shutting 'em down later in the year.

Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: Gotta check attendance at KC at Oakland today. Might be some kind of record. And it appears the "crowd" has been told to keep quiet.

WannaBe: It's $2.00 BART Wednesday Special, plus it's not raining outside, just cloudy, windy and cold, betcha it's a sell-out!
Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: Quietest sellout I've ever heard.

So if you arrive via BART it's $2? Years ago I went to an A's night game on BART, game went long and we had to leave in the 13th because the trains were going to stop running.

We were in Berkeley, so of course we took the Humphrey Gobart to get home.

Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: The A's first year I worked at the Alameda Naval Air Station, the summer before going to college. Liked to go to the night games before going home, and it was fun to watch the young A's with good starting pitchers and some promising position players. Always sat in the outfield and paid a couple of bucks.

As I've mentioned before, got to see McLain win his 18th in July (!). And Mickey Stanley made the best catch I've ever seen about 30 ft. in front of me.

WannaBe: Just checked, all seats in the $2 section for the July 4th game vs. BoSox are <SOLD OUT>... Imagine that!!

The Dodgers Wednesday game does not have a $2 section! =((

Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: How can you expect to see a team worth $2 billion for $2?

Phony Benoni: Verlander wasn't just tossing a shutout, it was a one-hit shutout--and he had only thrown 81 pitches in eight innings. No-brainer to leave him in.

But all the Hindsight Honchos who criticized Leyland for taking Verlander out in the opener will now lambaste him for leaving Verlander in.

Apr-11-12  Jim Bartle: Of course we do.
