Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-25-12  Jim Bartle: Tim Lincecum just pulled off a great double-purpose play. He hit Eaton in the back, by all intents on purpose, then picked him off before throwing another pitch.

Phony Benoni: OK, do you know the only player ever to pinch-hit for Johnny Bench?

Sep-26-12  Jim Bartle: And that was in his major league debut.
Sep-26-12  Jim Bartle: I hate it when new sports terminology comes into vogue, and announces and writers can't stop using it. Last night I was listening to the Angels announcers and one guy must have said ten times that an Angel batter had a chance "square up" or "square one up." It's like some new toy.

Plus both announcers just were incapable of saying "ball." It was always "baseball," as in "Aybar had a long way to run and let that baseball drop."

Phony Benoni: Back in my day, that meant "bunt". Or was that "square away"?
Sep-26-12  Jim Bartle: Now it means "hit the ball solidly for power."
Sep-26-12  technical draw: I like it when they say "this guy bats for average". Who doesn't? I batted for average too, .039.

Phony Benoni: Tigers pulled it out, 5-4, ending a streak of eleven straight losses in one-run games. Incredible. You wouldn't expect the 1962 Mets to do that, much less a playoff contender.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> No, they settled the strike because Las Vegas told them too.

Actually, I hear that the haste was probably a competitive issue, so that no team had to play another game with the replacements. If there had been no Thursday night game, it probably wouldn't be settled yet.

Sep-27-12  Jim Bartle: I don't understand betting very well.

Don't the bookies and casinos try to set the odds (and move the odds) so that the amount of money bet is about 50-50, so they will win their percentage no matter what? Who wins or loses any bet shouldn't affect the bookie/casino, just the people who place bets.

Of course if bettors don't think the games will be decided by the players but by the referees, they may not bet at all. But that's a different issue.

Phony Benoni: <JB> It's a good question. I thought about it as well, and concluded it was just the media being the media.

Yes, maybe $300 million changed hands, but that money was going to change hands in any event. The fact that it went to the wrong set of hands is actually irrelevant.

This should be an historic game tonight. Do you realize the refs will actually get cheered?

Sep-27-12  technical draw: I think they have to payoff the bets made prior to the strike. A lot of longshots can kill a bookie.

Phony Benoni: By the way, the Tigers won today on a walkoff groundout. Not a botched double play. The winning run scored from third when the batter grounded out to first base.

If that sounds odd, here is the highlight:

http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/mlb/g...

Yes, maybe he had no chance to get the runner at the plate. But he still could have tried.

And they're putting him up against R.A. Dickey. Some second chance. Here's the other game:

WannaBe: Trees are up on the Washington Woofers, expected more scoring coming into this game.
Sep-28-12  Shams: <And they're putting him up against R.A. Dickey. Some second chance.>

Maybe they wanted to make sure he didn't face real heat? Honestly, I don't know how anybody steps in to the batter's box and ever thinks about anything but not getting hit in the head by a pitch.

Sep-28-12  Jim Bartle: I can't blame the first baseman on that walk-off ground out. First, he made a great stop, and really had no chance to throw home while lying on the ground.

Touching first base was meaningless, though.
