Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  Penguincw: I think I made the suggestion of during a rain delay, home team forfeits the game.

Meanwhile, my "conspiracy theory" that MLB doesn't want a Canadian team in the World Series continues: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/....

But FTR, now that the game is tied 3-3, I feel a bit better. :)

  WannaBe: <Penguincw> sorry to let you in on this secret, since everyone in these United States have been sworn to secrecy.

We have hated Canada since 1700s, you guys have all the whale oil, seal oil, and all those ice for them cocktails.

We, us poor folks down south have to drill our own oil, and make our own ice for iced tea. We've been holding this grudge for 300+ years.

Don't even get us started on them Montreal Canadians or Canada Dry Ginger Ale.

Last time I ordered one, there was no Ale!!!!!

Oct-23-15  Jim Bartle: And I keep looking for this Canadian Club but I can't find it.

First and Third, no out. Top 9th. 3-3 game.

  Penguincw: My comments on G6:

Okay, the Blue Jays could not come through with RISP tonight. That's one thing. But that home run call, so costly. The game could've been tied 3-3 (more like should've), heading into the bottom of the 9th. Just because the Jays haven't come through with RISP tonight, doesn't mean they won't, in say, <extra innings>.

But the Jays had one of their best seasons in decades, standing ovation for them. If someone told me at the beginning of the year, that the Jays would make it all the way to G6 of the ALCS, I'd be more than thrilled. Just, such, a, controversial, call...

As for the World Series, from a neutral point of view, a TOR-CHC WS would've been the best possible outcome. Longest postseason drought vs. longest championship drought. Instead, it's NYM-KC. Any significance with that?

Honestly, I kinda hate both teams, I don't even know who to cheer for. In the baseball offseason, I watch hockey, but you guys watch football, so I guess I'll see you guys in March, but I'll drop by from time to time.

Oct-25-15  playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues> Some baseball names to conjure with, if you can figure out how to pronounce them:

Doug "Eyechart" Gwosdz
Rocky and l'il brother Mike Krnsich

Mike Krnsich's baseball card used to give me fits.

  WannaBe: This day in history, BOS/NYM, E3 Buckner.
Oct-25-15  Jim Bartle: My story about that game is interesting. Back in the 80s there was no Internet, and I didn't have cable or see newspapers very often.

A friend of mine sent me VHS cassettes with important sporting events, which I got through the embassy mail a couple of days later.

So I got tapes of the 1986 World Series, two to a tape, and watched "doubleheaders" without knowing the result. It was odd getting excited watching games which had been played a week or so before. (Once I caught myself screaming at Candy Maldonado for missing a fly ball, thinking it was happening at the moment.)

Anyway, game six went into extra innings. I watched the Sox score two in the top of the tenth. Then one out in the tenth and Hernandez came up to bat. And the tape ended.

So I thought, great the Sox finally won a World Series. Then about four days later my Sports Illustrated arrived with the Mets on the cover. I couldn't understand it. Then i read the story and found out what had happened.

  WannaBe: <JB> Thanks to YouTube, you can (re)live history as if it is happening right now!!

I don't have a story as good as yours, mine is the '88 Gibson HR, I was taking my evening bath.

I had the radio tuned in to the game (very far away from the tub, thank you very much), and when Vin Scully officially announced the ball was out of the park, I jumped out and started screaming.

Me mum thought I'd gone mad.

Oct-26-15  Jim Bartle: Similar things have happened with boxing matches, particularly those which ended in the first round. A friend of mine was in the kitchen at the start of the Spinks-Tyson fight, and missed the whole two minutes.

In the 80s when I was getting those videos via diplomatic pouch (regular mail would have taken forever) I sometimes went to great lengths not to hear the results of games or matches.

Baseball and football were pretty easy, but tennis was often a challenge, because that was in the papers here and quite a few people were interested.

In 1987 a consul asked me, "About this guy who won Wimbledon, who is he?" I said, "Don't tell me, don't tell me!" So he said, "OK, about this Pat Cash..."

  WannaBe: Week 7 for RTTTZMR! We only had one game this week that involved 'distance' travel, and road team lost

<LOST> Baltimore @ Arizona

The season's running total is now 8-19.

While the other road team in week 7 went 5-8, and the season total is now 38-40.

Week 8 will feature the following games where the road team have to travel two time zones or more:

<???> Arizona @ Cleveland

<???> San Francisco @ St. Louis

<???> San Diego @ Baltimore

<???> New York Jets @ Oakland

<???> Seattle @ Dallas

Oct-27-15  Jim Bartle: I think we've got some visiting teams as big favorites there: Arizona, Jets and Seattle.

Kansas City made a minor roster change for World Series play.

Must be getting old, seeing all these kids of ex-major leaguers playing now.

Mondesi, Gordon, Van Slyke, Fielder, etc.
