Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Thanks. I'm pretty certain the game was begun on August 14, 1916, in round 1.

Harry Fowler Lee's report does not mention the game, but he does indicate that some other games were adjourned. That might account for the incomplete score, though it might be expected the <Star> would have the full score two weeks later. (And that's the Washing Star, right?)

Unfortunately, Lee's report for rounds 3-4 on the 15th, which would have included the adjourned results, was not published. (Or I didn't find it.).

Lee doesn't indicate colors at all, but he does provide a great deal of information. I have reconstructed the pairings based on the Berger Table, but haven't checked them thoroughly against the known information. I should probably do that, and possibly add them to the collection.

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlet> Clarification: Lee's report int he Chicago Tribune, August 15, 1916, states that Whitaker and Isaacs did play on the previous day, when the first two rounds were held.

The result is not mentioned. However, both have results given for their round two games against different players, so they must have played in round 1.

Oct-22-16  Deus Ex Alekhina: The Cubs finished with a record of 103-58, a rain-shortened 1-1 tie with the Pirates not included in their record. The tie game is therefore an *asterisk* game, and maybe the *asterisk* game bodes well for them this year, an omen of good things to come; perhaps it will cancel out that damned billy goat.

Penguincw: Kershaw's line today looks a lot like the 2013 NLCS, Game 6:

2013: 4 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO

2016: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R (4 ER), 0 BB, 4 SO

I just found one: Eddie Robinson. Still alive at age 95 and played 134 games for Cleveland in 1948. Wonder what his thoughts are on the team:

Just realized that during Vin Scully's long career, neither the Indians or Cubs won the World Series. The very year he retires, one of them will end their drought.

The second is Harry Caray after the last game of a season saying "The Cubs will be in the World Series some day," and "It requires a veteran manager."

WannaBe: Baltimore Ravens set an interesting record today, they are the first team to lose two consecutive games in the same stadium to two different teams.

Last week, they visited NYG, and today, they lost to the NYJ.

That's nothing, one time, in the same tournament playing hall, I lost 6 games in a row from Fri-Sun.

Sheeeeeeeeeeet.

saffuna: But how many times has a team played consecutive road games in the same stadium? Very few I would think.

Maybe a team might play the final game of a season against one team, then play them the next week, also away, the first week of the playoffs. But otherwise I don't see it happening more than once a decade.

Phony Benoni: Candy Maldonado. Mitch Webster. Familiar names, perhaps. But what distinction do they share with no other players?

You can probably figure it out if you play around here long enough:

Penguincw: I see Lester and Kluber have been announced starters for G1. Not bad choices, but I would've gone with someone else, like Vaughn (CLE) or Rowengartner (CHC).

---

I assume these are secondary tickets or whatever, but $1,000,000 is a bit too much for tickets if you ask me: http://www.12up.com/posts/3995563-c....

I didn't think they would exceed $25000 period.

saffuna: I have an idea how to watch the games at Wrigley without paying. There are some buildings across the street beyond the outfield seats with roofs high enough to see over the bleachers.

So why not just knock on the door of one of those buildings and ask if you can go up to the roof and watch? Has anybody ever thought of that?

saffuna: Question, ca. 1964: Would you consider trading Kaline?

Detroit GM Jim Campbell: I would consider it, yes sir. If the Giants would offer Mays and Marichal and Cepeda for Kaline, I would have to give it some consideration.
