 | | Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Thanks. I'm pretty certain the game was begun on August 14, 1916, in round 1. Harry Fowler Lee's report does not mention the game, but he does indicate that some other games were adjourned. That might account for the incomplete score, though it might be expected the <Star> would have the full score two weeks later. (And that's the Washing Star, right?) Unfortunately, Lee's report for rounds 3-4 on the 15th, which would have included the adjourned results, was not published. (Or I didn't find it.). Lee doesn't indicate colors at all, but he does provide a great deal of information. I have reconstructed the pairings based on the Berger Table, but haven't checked them thoroughly against the known information. I should probably do that, and possibly add them to the collection. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, I'll have to pass on flying to Chicago. Ever since I grew the beard, I've been getting these looks from the T.S.A. folks and I don't trust them. Nobody touches my cavities except my dentist. |
|
| Oct-21-16 | | Travis Bickle: Sad to hear that Mr Benoni.. As you are the only pal I would ask to a ballgame because of your baseball wisdom, witty anecdotes & I could steal your chess secrets between innings!... ; P |

 | | Phony Benoni: <MissScarlet> Clarification: Lee's report int he Chicago Tribune, August 15, 1916, states that Whitaker and Isaacs did play on the previous day, when the first two rounds were held. The result is not mentioned. However, both have results given for their round two games against different players, so they must have played in round 1. |
|
| Oct-22-16 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: The Cubs finished with a record of 103-58, a rain-shortened 1-1 tie with the Pirates not included in their record. The tie game is therefore an *asterisk* game, and maybe the *asterisk* game bodes well for them this year, an omen of good things to come; perhaps it will cancel out that damned billy goat. |

 | | Penguincw: Kershaw's line today looks a lot like the 2013 NLCS, Game 6: 2013: 4 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO
2016: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R (4 ER), 0 BB, 4 SO |

 | | Penguincw: Game 6 of the NLCS, and the Cubs made it through the 8th inning without any trouble. Jansen out there with a possible 12 out save? |
|
Oct-23-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Just checked, and there appear to be no living players from either the 1945 Cubs or 1948 Indians. |

 | | Penguincw: < Phony Benoni: Just checked, and there appear to be no living players from either the 1945 Cubs or 1948 Indians. > I just found one: Eddie Robinson. Still alive at age 95 and played 134 games for Cleveland in 1948. Wonder what his thoughts are on the team: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b... ---
Just realized that during Vin Scully's long career, neither the Indians or Cubs won the World Series. The very year he retires, one of them will end their drought. |

 | | saffuna: Cubs' fans sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame":รง https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZc...
Harry Caray "Sure as God made little green apples, someday the Chicago Cubs are going to be in the World Series" "I requires a veteran manager"

 | | saffuna: Sorry, the urls aren't working I guess. The first is Harry Caray and Hillary Clinton singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." The second is Harry Caray after the last game of a season saying "The Cubs will be in the World Series some day," and "It requires a veteran manager." |
|
Oct-23-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Hmmm. Thought I checked on Robinson. Must be losing my touch. It's all this chess stuff. Ruins your mind. |

 | | WannaBe: Baltimore Ravens set an interesting record today, they are the first team to lose two consecutive games in the same stadium to two different teams. Last week, they visited NYG, and today, they lost to the NYJ. http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/schedu... That's nothing, one time, in the same tournament playing hall, I lost 6 games in a row from Fri-Sun. Sheeeeeeeeeeet. |
|
Oct-23-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Heck, the Lions do that whenever they have two home games in a row. |
|
Oct-23-16
 | | WannaBe: I should have made my post a bit clear(er).
<On the road>. =)) On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I cant wait to get on the road again |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: But how many times has a team played consecutive road games in the same stadium? Very few I would think. Maybe a team might play the final game of a season against one team, then play them the next week, also away, the first week of the playoffs. But otherwise I don't see it happening more than once a decade. |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Candy Maldonado. Mitch Webster. Familiar names, perhaps. But what distinction do they share with no other players? You can probably figure it out if you play around here long enough: http://www.baseball-reference.com/f... |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: J see Maldonado was a free agent five times, and Webster four. Maybe related to that. |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | Penguincw: I see Lester and Kluber have been announced starters for G1. Not bad choices, but I would've gone with someone else, like Vaughn (CLE) or Rowengartner (CHC). ---
I assume these are secondary tickets or whatever, but $1,000,000 is a bit too much for tickets if you ask me: http://www.12up.com/posts/3995563-c.... I didn't think they would exceed $25000 period. |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: I have an idea how to watch the games at Wrigley without paying. There are some buildings across the street beyond the outfield seats with roofs high enough to see over the bleachers. So why not just knock on the door of one of those buildings and ask if you can go up to the roof and watch? Has anybody ever thought of that? |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: Question, ca. 1964: Would you consider trading Kaline? Detroit GM Jim Campbell: I would consider it, yes sir. If the Giants would offer Mays and Marichal and Cepeda for Kaline, I would have to give it some consideration. |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Maldonado and Webster are the only players who have played with the Cubs, Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Indians. (Both played on other teams as well.) |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: Oh yeah, I had that right on the tip of my fingers. |
|
Oct-24-16
 | | saffuna: OK, a question, maybe easy: What player was named for one president and played in the movies by another? |
