Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: And it looks like the Cleveland Indians' winning streak has...

Never mind.

---

In other news, I see LAD recently clinched a playoff berth. Took them longer than most expected, but oh well. I believe CLE's magic number is 2.

Sep-14-17  Travis Bickle: Well Phony that's a good question.. We had the Falcons beat, (a Superbowl Team last year!), last week but could not score from the 5 yard line on 4 tries & lost...
Sep-15-17  Travis Bickle: How ya feeling today Mr Benoni? How are those Lions doing this Football season? I know your QB got paid Big Time Moola $$$$$$$$$$!!

P.S. I never was 1 to tweet but last night I was tweeting the Prez, hot female actresses & singers, a few Cubs & some Rock heroes of mine!

Here's the Cubs lineup I found on twitter for tonight against The Redbirds! So I thought I'd copy & paste & send this beautiful picture right over to you! ; P

saffuna: Wild goings on in St. Louis-Cubs. Batter thought he was out on a called third strike, Lackey walks toward dugout, and the umpire calls it a ball.

Big argument.

Hitter smashes double on next pitch. Lackey goes nuts, gets tossed.

Gotta see video of this.

Sep-15-17  Travis Bickle: The crooked ump blew strike 3!! Lackey would have punched out that supid blind ump! Catcher Willson Contreras also got tossed as he would have given the S.O.B. a beating after Lackey was through...

Penguincw: < Hitter smashes double on next pitch. Lackey goes nuts, gets tossed. >

And it was the pitcher too who got a hit (albeit a good hitting pitcher)!

I do wonder if the batter's reaction (ex. walking to the dugout toward vs. staying at the plate) affects the umpires' call (at least on borderline pitches).

Looking at the actual pitch, I think it's a strike too, but I don't think the way Contreras caught that really helped. Sure, it's where it crosses the strike zone, not where it ends up, but I've seen many pitchers get the call, even if it's outside, if the catcher frames it well, and the pitcher has pinpoint accuracy. I'm sure the opposite exists as well.

It can be hard to tell from just looking at the pitch in 2D, but I'm not an ump. And an important question as well (in general): did <both> sides get that call (probably just one bad call).

Well, Cubs did win, so doesn't matter, no harm, no foul.

< Lackey would have punched out that supid blind ump! >

The HP umpire is Jordan Baker, who at 6'7'', is the tallest ump in MLB, so who knows. ;)

Penguin, Lackey is 6'6" & weighs 235, plus he was rabid like a Rotweiller not a fatso who eats donuts for breakfast! ; P

Penguincw: And the Cleveland Indians' long winning streak comes to an end. Did Sports Illustrated put them on the cover?

Hmm, time to rest for the playoffs I guess? Or go for those top seeds?

P.S. Just realized Indians blew a 3-1 lead in this game. :p

saffuna: Oops. Matthew "Oil Can" Boyd falls one batter short. Solid double with two out in the ninth.

But haven't one-hitters sort of become a Detroit Tigers tradition?

Sep-17-17

Penguincw: So close to the no-hitter. Of course it occurs on the last out.

---

In a related note, the HP umpire for the game was Dan Iassogna. Interestingly enough, he was also an ump for the 2 no-hitters by ex-Tiger, Justin Verlander. Verlander is pitching today for HOU, and a win, and the Astros are going to the playoffs.

Penguincw: Interesting thing I noticed in the NL WC standings earlier today:

Team, W-L, Pct., E#

MIA, 69-80, .463, 1
PIT, 68-81, .456, E
ATL, 67-80, .456, 1
SD, 66-83, .443, E

So PIT was ahead of ATL in the standings, but ATL still had a chance to pickup the WC, but PIT didn't!

Obviously, ATL is now eliminated, and while they may have been mathematically alive, even if they won every game from here on out, and COL lost every game, they still wouldn't have made it. And yes, this is due to the W-L record, and the fact that Elimination Numbers only take into account number of losses.

WannaBe: We very well could see two teams finish in triple digits in victories, something not seen since 2004 MLB season.

LAD 96-53 could have already reached 100, if they had play .500 ball and not have lost 11 in a row and 16 out of 17.

LAD's remaining schedule: @PHI (4-games) vs SFG (3) vs SD (3) @COL (3). If LAD only win 1 game in each series, 100 Ws.

CLE 93-57 would have best record in baseball had they not gone 1-5 after the All-Star break (Swept at OAK, and lost 2 of 3 at SFG).

Remaining schedule: @LAA (3), @SEA (3), vs MIN (3), vs ChiSox (3).

LAA and SEA will be tough road games, LAA still in the WC hunt, SEA is technically alive, but methinkth they are done.

Scheduling wise, looks harder for CLE to get to 100 Ws.

Phony Benoni: Well, Travis, we'll know more about theLions in a few minutes. They bezt a supposedly good team at home, but now play another good one on the road. I'd sy the fans are cautiously optimistic, but Lions' fans know better than being any kind of optimistic.
