I transcribed most of these games from the daily bulletin, which often did not include full player names. For instance, Pal Benko's first round opponent is given simply as "Cohen".

I am hesitant to send out these games without fuller information, since it will be very difficult to update them later.

Fortunately, I have just found a partial crosstable fron the event, which should help in answering most of the questions. It will take some time, but now that I have a specific request I'm willing to drop my other projects for a bit and work on this.

I would like to clarify one point.
In Atlanta collection, the last round game is given as Gheorghiu-Fedorowicz, which means Gheorghiu had white and "Fed" black. Could you tell me precisely which is the source of such identification of colors?! Or maybe even you have this game!?

This can be checked bylooking at their colors for the previous three rounds:

Round 9: Black
Round 10: White
Round 11 Black
Round 12 would normally be White

Fedorowicz
Round 9: White
Round 10: Black
Round 11: White
Round 12 would normally be Black

First, many thanks for everything you are doing for CG: game collections, posts and apparently many other things, I'm still discovering this site. Not very clear yet who does what.

GOTDs and puns are part of the fun as well as knowledge: GOTDs for sure, it's the site's main feature with POTD, puns sometimes because they can trigger interesting debates on chess or non-chess related items (we sometimes need a break).

I understood yesterday MissScarlett is alone doing this and doesn't take into account the voting booth (I'll disregard the fact he/she didn't know about pun submission page even though his/her selection impacts this). Not blaming him/her, it's just too much for one person, aggravated by the fact it's under-processed.

Probably CG admins need to think for a while how to improve. Ideally the process should be:

1. Transparent: clear rules on who does what, when, how GOTD+puns are selected/on hold/deleted/other status.

2. Staffed: many users would agree to participate to the selection and help poor MS in his/her dantesque task (7000 entries, wow). There could be a a small reward, e.g. a label for the user doing this or reduced/free membership given a level of commitment. The voting booth could be an element but at least it needs to be advertised and used.

3. Structured. Instead of going through the 7000 entries randomly (it that the case? see transparency above), there could be a first automated filter based on e.g. not a previous GOTD, no/little/old kibitz, famous players or tournaments, etc. Then an automated filter based on voting booth. Then at least two "super-users" could select.

The USCF rating suplement pulishd in the June 1971 Chess Life included results from the 1970 American Open, so anyone who played there would be listed. There are in fact three Ervins: Gary, Roy and Walter.

Now, the LAT report gives some other pairings from the third round. Thee include Robert Byrne against "K Nelson" (Keith Nelson, AZ, rated 2016) and James Taran losing to Bill JOnes (2033).

This would indicate that Saidy's opponent was probably over 2000 as well. That could only be Roy Ervin, as the other two Ervins were below 1500.

Looking through other rating supplements of the time, I do not see an "A Ervin" anywhere. So that appears to have been a mistake, perhaps influenced by the opponent being "A Saidy".
