 | | Tabanus: <Phony Benoni> I'm not American so I don't know how well known this DVD is in America - but it should be a good start for collecting US Open games? http://www.masterchessgames.com/, scroll down to bottom. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> Thanks for the reference; it's always good to know about large databases. However, I don't know if it will be useful for finding US Open games. I downloaded one section, and it appears that no tournament or site is given for the games. I'm pretty sure that 90% of the US Open material I have has never been appeared in databases, and may be lost unless I get my act together. |

| Nov-08-09 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony when does baseball season start?
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/foot...Of course with the new Cubs owners it will probably be wait til next year in May!

 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, baseball season never ends. They just don't play any games for a couple of months. |
| Nov-08-09 | | Jim Bartle: I ain't in a slump. I'm just not hitting.
PB, you're an aficionado of the smothered mate. Did you notice that Morozevich tempted Kramnik to take the rook on move 22 and get smothered? |
| Nov-08-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Jim I heard Sosa is slimming down to a svelte 140 lbs for a movie offer to play the Queen of pop LOL!! |

 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Have to admit I'm not following the Tal Memorial at all. In fact, I've never enjoyed following live events. I can think of few activities more boring than watching two other people play chess--and remember I've been watching Lions games for years. To show you the kind of activities I indulge in during my spare time, right now I'm engaged in sniffing out games from the Anglo-American Cable Matches of 1896-1911. Yes, I live in the past. |

 | | Open Defence: Happy Birthday!! may all your Benoni's end up in swindles :) |

Nov-08-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <Open Defence> Thank you! That's one wish that never goes out of style. |

| Nov-09-09 | | Travis Bickle: Sigh... I miss gentle souls like this. ; P
"I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important -like a league game or something".
- Dick Butkus |
| Nov-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: Except that Singletary and Payton played as hard and as well as Butkus, and never wanted to hurt anyone. I'm reading how tough it must be to be both a Republican and a Yankees fan. They haven't won a World Series with a Republican in the White House since 1958. (Keep winning, Yanks. Hey Albert, want to sign with NY?) |
| Nov-09-09 | | A.G. Argent: <...Albert...NY.> Jiiiiiiim, don't you go there. I would kill myself. |
| Nov-09-09 | | A.G. Argent: And is it really your BD, David Benoni? If so, best of returns. |
| Nov-09-09 | | A.G. Argent: Also, Travis, I've been meaning to ask you what you thought about the new owners of the Cubs. Why is it a bad thing? |
Nov-09-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Tes, it's true, the Arsovic twins share a birthday with me, as do Mike Roarke and Shane Halter. <JB> You may have something there. Since the World Series began in 1903, Republicans have been in the White House 58 years, Democrats 49--yet the Yankees have won only 7 of their 27 titles under third-party rule (1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1953, 1956, 1958). Here's their alltime political World Series scorecard: Under Republicans: +7 -10
Under Democrats: +20 -3
I wonder if other teams have similar discrepancies. I know the Tigers are +1 -4 with Republicans, +2 -2 with Democrats. |
| Nov-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: I can see the Bears losing because they just don't have much of an offense. That's happened plenty over the years. But to see them giving up 30, 40 points per game just goes against the whole history of the team. They've always had a solid defense. |
| Nov-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: A.G., I meant they were trying to lure Albert Belle out of retirement. |
| Nov-09-09 | | Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent: Also, Travis, I've been meaning to ask you what you thought about the new owners of the Cubs. Why is it a bad thing?> A.G. I'll give them a chance but what I have heard is the new owners are the same old conservative wallet types who get 2nd tier players instead of 1st and probably will be as stupid as The Tribune Company in sighing the wrong 'star' players to huge contracts. |
| Nov-09-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: Except that Singletary and Payton played as hard and as well as Butkus, and never wanted to hurt anyone.>
Jim Dick Butkus was made to be a football player. I read his autobiography
In the book Dick reminisces about when he was a boy for fun he and a few friends in Chicago would ride their bicycles full speed into one another and crash em. When the bikes were destroyed they would steal some more for more demolition fun LOL!! He was born for physical contact. If you think Walter Payton or Mike Singletary didn't play as hard as Butkus you're wrong. Jack Youngblood said "Walter Payton would knock the hell out of me with a vicious stiff arm and then help me up", LOL!! Singletary and Bears safety Todd Bell hit a reciever on a slant route and sandwiched the poor fellow. On that play Singletary broke his own helmet on the guy and knocked him out, but is was a clean hit hahahah!!! |
| Nov-09-09 | | Jim Bartle: No, I meant to say Singletary and Payton did play as hard as Butkus, they just didn't try to hurt anybody. IMO Singletary was the best middle linebacker ever, better than Butkus, Lanier or Lambert. And I thought that when he was still playing, not just when he became 49ers coach. |
Nov-09-09
 | | WannaBe: Bill Laimbeer, not Lambert, was the best middle linebacker that I ever saw!! What an elbow he had!! |
| Nov-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Ha ha! Good point. Another candidate: Wes Unseld. Or Wayne Embry for those whose memory goes way back. |
| Nov-10-09 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Singletary was a great MLB but Singletary benefitted from two awesome DT's Steve McMichael who beat the hell out of opposing linemen and Dan Hampton who refused to be blocked. Those two created a triangle that Singletary used to to find the holes and beat blocks whereas Butkus besides DE Ed O'Bradovich didn't have a whole lot of help. |
| Nov-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: 49ers guard Randy Cross used to say he'd hold Hampton every play (his only hope, he said), and he'd just get up and get set for the next play. Never complained. |
