Jul-26-10 | | Jim Bartle: Things seem to be getting worse and worse for the Tigers. I see the "Stork" got them this time. |
Jul-26-10 | | Jim Bartle: Not "Stork," sorry. It's "Heron." |
Jul-27-10 | | Travis Bickle: The 'Stork' played on The Raiders Jim. ; P |
Jul-27-10 | | just a kid: Should I dare say...Matt Garza anyone? |
Jul-27-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <just a kid> No problem. It'll probably happen again with what players the Tigers have left. <Travis Bickle> Hey, looks like Lou Piniella gets to go out with dignity. |
Jul-27-10 | | just a kid: to be honest,I was more surprised it wasn't the Rays getting no-hit but the one giving the no-hitter! And with some of the inconsistency of our hitting lineup,I was a little surprised that we didn't get no-hit first |
Jul-27-10
 | | WannaBe: No hitters and perfect games are now as common, as me losing chess games. It used to be as common as me winning a chess game! |
Jul-27-10
 | | WannaBe: There are now 2 teams that does not have at least a no-hitter in their record book, San Diego Padres, and the New York Mets. Now, the Mets surprises me, since they had Nolan Ryan, the Pads, well... |
Jul-27-10 | | Jim Bartle: The Mets without a no-hitter is a real surprise, and I'd say a fluke. Among all the major league teams, and the unlikelihood of a no-hitter in any one game, there's bound to be one good team without one. However ex-Mets have done very well. Seaver, Gooden, Cone, Ryan and a couple others have thrown them. Hideo Nomo threw a no-hitter before he was a Met and also after he moved on. |
Jul-27-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> Hey, looks like Lou Piniella gets to go out with dignity.> Yes I agree. The names that have come up so far in the Chicago media are Ryne Sanberg, Joe Girardi, Bobby Valentine & Bob Brenly who's up in the Cubs broadcast booth. Who do you like Dr. Benoni? |
Jul-27-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> Hard to believe Girardi would leave the Yankees for the Cubs, unless Jeter wants to take over as player-manager. Have to believe they'd go with Sandberg. He's been climbing the ladder and it would be a popular move. It's a much different situation than we had in Detroit when Alan Trammell took over. Smart ballplayer, but no manangerial experience and it showed at times. Plus a pretty bad team. |
Jul-27-10
 | | WannaBe: Surprised that Detroit did not retain/hire Kirk Gibson, front office, or as bench coach, hitting coach, etc... He now is managing a terrible Arizona team. |
Jul-27-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Gibson was the bench coach for Trammell in 2003-2005, when the Tigers had some horrible teams. When they hired Leyland in 2006, they just wanted to sweep away the entire mess of the previous administration. Gibson impresses me as the kind of manager/coach who can give you a quick jump start via a kick in the pants, but would wear thin over the not-so-long run. Sort of the way George Steinbrenner kept alternating Billy Martin and Bob Lemon. |
Jul-27-10 | | A.G. Argent: Yeah, Travis, I agree; I would think Sandberg would be a lock. If nothing else, you need a good vibe or two at Wrigley these days. But wouldn't you agree who(m)ever it is, it's pretty much a rebuilding situtation? |
Jul-27-10 | | A.G. Argent: And sorry, Czar you got ho-hit. That has to have just that much more salt-in-the-wound to it. 5th no-hitter this year and we're still in July. |
Jul-27-10 | | Jim Bartle: I'll bet if Sandberg becomes Cubs manager, he'll have a pretty long honeymoon. But if he doesn't win, eventually he'll join Piniella, Frey, Baker and the rest. I still remember where I was, in a photo studio in Palo Alto, when I heard about the DeJesus for Bowa trade on the radio, and the report made it sound as if Sandberg might be a decent player. Bowa was a key to the Phillies' pennant in 1983, but still, what a bad trade. |
Jul-27-10 | | Travis Bickle: JB, Jim Frey's Cubs won 13-0 at Wrigley against the Padres in the 1st game of the NCLS and needed 1 game in San Diego to advance to the World Series. The Cubs who had the best record in the National League had to be a road team because they didn't have lights. I think they played 1 night game! Dusty Baker was no loser either. He had the Cubs 5 outs away from The Series in 2003. The way they lost could only be told in a Twilight Zone episode. |
Jul-27-10 | | Jim Bartle: You're missing the point, Travis. No matter how popular a manager at first, eventually the fans are going to turn on him if the team doesn't win. Sandberg would get more time than most, but not forever. I remember Green Bay fans being pretty angry with Bart Starr as coach when he couldn't produce results. |
Jul-27-10
 | | Phony Benoni: OK. I think we've reached a new level in freak baseball injuries: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... |
Jul-27-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> I know what you're saying. That's the nature of the beast in professional sports, the bottom line is winning. Unfortunatley for most Cubs managers the bottom line is the bottom line for the owners. besides the great Vince Lombardi who was a genius, I don't know of any coaches or managers etc. capable of winning at the pro level without having the players it takes to get the job done.
P.S. Recently The Chicago Bears were #13 on Forbes list of most profitable sports franchises. I think that frugality explains why The Bears played in Super Bowl XLI without a legitimate QB. |

 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni: OK. I think we've reached a new level...> I agree, at least Jeff Kent was 'washing his truck' when he slipped and got hurt. |

Jul-27-10 | | crawfb5: The Munich collection looks great. The round 3 game Maroczy vs Pillsbury, 1900 had an interesting finish: click for larger viewOne thing I find odd is that some thought that Pillsbury was not going to play at Munich. Marshall even said one reason he came back to the US right after Paris, 1900 was that neither Lasker nor Pillsbury was going to be at Munich. Probably not compelling enough to add, especially given we don't know the details. Anyway, I can now delete the collection I started on Munich and if I run across anything that might belong in the introduction, I'll pass it along. |

Jul-28-10
 | | sleepyirv: After Sandberg paid his dues for this moment, the Cubs aren't going tell him no- they already have enough fan's wrath on their hands. The only reason not to is that is a cruel and unusual punishment to hand this team over to anyone who's been through this show already. Girardi just won a World Series. Yeah, I don't think he's moving away. Valentine... well, is a bit mercurial for the team.
Brently is a first-rate analyst, for his management abilities all I have to say is "How many games did Kim pitch back in the 2001 World Series?" In conclusion, FIRE JIM HENDRY! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Fantastic! Thank you.
A particularly robust and useful introduction- Coupled with <Crawfb5's> stellar detective work, I think I can make an interesting segment on <Munich 1900> with all of this outstanding material you've collected. Just great, thank you again. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hello!
I have a quick question:
You are a library scholar, correct?
Did Libraries just finish archiving tons of stuff on mircofilm, and now they have to re-archive it on "the internet"? Nobody reads microfilm today right?
Do you think that one second after they finish re-archiving all of the microfilm to "internet ether", there will be a new technology rendering the archive useless again? |
