You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points. However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it. For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you. If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking. As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull. My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long. My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!" Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

May-13-12    Jim Bartle: Hey, they're showing a "classic" Yankee game on TV. Andy Pettite is pitching and Derek Jeter just made a diving catch of a line drive. It's great to watch and remember how they used to play. May-13-12    Jim Bartle: Even if Boston gets by the Sixers, I don't think they have a chance against Miami this year. Pierce and Allen are going at half-speed, and I don't think Garnett can maintain his spectacular play (29, 28 points) of the past couple of games. And Rondo can't do it by himself. San Antonio has three no-doubter HOFers on its roster right now. People made the same argument after the NFL implemented free agency; then the Patriots went to three Super Bowls in four years. As long as organizations are smart, there will always be a team or two to corner the market on taleny. And, in the case of Miami, big money will snap up available talent. I don't think Bosh is a true star, and as good as Parker and Ginobili are, I don't see them as on the level of the top guys on those 80s Lakers and Boston teams. OKC clearly has two stars, Durant and Westbrook, and the rest are supporting players. (I think Westbrook is going to fade incoming years; there's something I don't trust about his game.) I'm still picking San Antonio this year, by the way. As I remember it, the Patriots built their team by picking up lower-rated players who were actually good and fit the system. What's the name of that linebacker who also played fullback sometimes? He was a nobody when they picked him up yet he became a key to the defense. And of course they got Brady with a 6th-round pick. May-13-12    Jim Bartle: I see that David Stern said today that flopping is a problem in the NBA. I know some guys let themselves go down (a lot less since Reggie Miller retired), but I think so much is asked of defenders in order to avoid blocking fouls that guys are going to look as if they're flopping all the time. A defender is required to be absolutely still, not even the upper body moving, as a guy drives into him to get a charging call. He has to be a statue--it's ridiculous. So natually an unmoving defender is going to go down when he's hit even if it's not that hard. If he prepares himself in order not to go down, he'll get called for the block. Most first-round series are not that competitive--for simplicity we can say only the 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5, even if 7 and 8 seeds have won a couple of times--so that would leave only 54 of the 107 series as possibilities. Of those 54 let's say half go to a seventh go to a seventh game, probably more than actually occurred. That leaves 27. So the visiting team only wins 25% of game sevens, that leaves us with seven times the visitor won a game seven. And only one of those seven also won the opening game on the road. May-15-12    Jim Bartle: Pretty good old-time face-to-face argument between Charlie Manuel and Ump John Davidson today. Lamentably Manuel stopped before kicking dirt on Davidson, and he didn't turn his cap around to be able to get closer. What I couldn't figure out is what the argument was about it. An Astro swung and missed (struck out) on a wild pitch and was easily safe at first. Somehow this started a very heated argument.
