<Open Defence> Your question has so many answers, that I'll tell you what doesn't interest me: ballet, classical music, feminism, etc, etc. |

 | | rinus: <zanshin> It's what we call in Dutch: mattenklopper = carpet beater (English)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpet... |
|
| Feb-10-08 | | zanshin: <rinus> I see. The article also says: <It is used in the James Bond novel Casino Royale as a torture device. In the film, a knotted rope is used. In either case, Bond's enemy, Le Chiffre, uses the instrument to try to force information out of Bond by striking him repeatedly in the testicles.> I will remember this as we try to force your fellow Dutchman into submission ;-) |

How to run xboard with a UCI engine under Linux.
Step 1) Install a utility program called "polyglot" that translates between xboard and UCI. Polyglot is packaged for many distributions. Let me know if you have any trouble with this step. Step 2) Create a sub-directory of your home directory called ".polyglot" (just a suggested name). In that sub-directory, create a config file to tell polyglot about each particular chess engine you will use. I've set this up for Toga and my file is called "toga.ini". The contents of that file look like this: ***
[PolyGlot]
EngineDir = /tmp
EngineCommand = /usr/local/bin/toga
Book = false
BookFile = /usr/share/games/fruit/book_small.bin ; same directory as INI file, use full path otherwise [Engine]
Hash = 64
***
I recall that a few examples came with the polyglot distribution. Now you are ready to run xboard. As part of the command line for invoking xboard you will you use the -fcp (first chess program) option. This option takes a single argument, so if you need to pass it a command line with several arguments you will need to enclose those in quotes so they get treated like one argument by the linux shell. So it might look like this: -fcp "/usr/games/polyglot /home/rinus/.polyglot/toga.ini" What I usually do after that is load the saved position (FEN file created by xboard when you save position) and then ask xboard to go into "analysis mode". Step 4) (optional) - if you want you set up a shell script to help remember the syntax and save typing if the last invocation is no longer in your shell history. So I have an executable script called /usr/games/ptoga that looks like this: #!/bin/bash
/usr/games/polyglot /home/j/.polyglot/toga.ini
Then I can just call xboard with -fcp ptoga

 | | rinus: <izimbra> thanks for your explanation. I will try it on a Ubuntu machine in time. |
|
| Mar-21-08 | | izimbra: polyglot is packaged as part of universe for Ubuntu gutsy so that part should be straightforward for you. |

 | | rinus: <izimbra> Right now we're in a h4/Kg2 struggle as world team; I don't think any engine will see the rooksac from the current position at let's say at least 34-ply. In many lines without the knowledge of the Rook sac it's Black's objective to get his King to d6; it would be nice if GMT would do as such. But we should get good positions if GMT doesn't act like this, i.e. makes moves like Ra6 or so. I'm going to analyse!
(The linux experiment will take place, but later; I will inform you right here) |
