Tabanus: <rinus> Perhaps I was too confident vs <whatthefat>. Let's say draw (with best play) at 99 % certainty - not 100 as my post could indicate.

Damn he played 43...c5, I had a lot of 43...Ra7 analyses ready :/

Btw, I have nothing particular on mind as regards <firebrandx>. He's a nice guy, fine artist, rated at my level, I envy his quad core :)

rinus: <Tabanus> Luckily I'm reading this; I nearly had typed in the main forum: Is it now 'Catch 22' or 'Catch 36'?

I decided not to do so (before I had read this); <firebrandx> is a good winner.

I liked <g.mueller> more this time; did a lot of backsliding along his lines, and they were largely correct.

It could be though, that <g.mueller> is not a real chess-amateur.

I've been on that drawish <36...Kf6>-line a thousand times, and still think GMT could draw.

It will be a victory for GMT, if he can point out to us how we could have won after <36...Kf6>, and we are still ignorant.

May-07-08  MarkThornton: <rinus: re your analysis on C Van de Loo vs M Hesseling, 2008;>

<rinus: <MarkThornton> After <40...Kf5> Analysis by Fruit 2.3.1 (30-ply):

1. (-0.30): 41.Nb4 Ke4 42.Nc6 a5 43.Nxa5 Kxd4 44.a4 Kxe5 45.Nb7 d4 46.a5 d3 47.Kf1 d2 48.Ke2 g4 49.Kxd2 g3 50.a6 g2 51.a7 g1Q 52.a8Q Qg2+ 53.Kd1 Qh1+ 54.Kc2 Qe4+ 55.Kb3 Qd5+ 56.Kc2 Qc4+>

Here is the position after White's 52nd move.

click for larger view

Black to move. Please could you feed this position into Fruit?

I find it hard to believe that the Black Q+B can do no damage here, although I haven't found anything myself. I wonder if Black has a good line that is over the horizon of your original analysis.

If not, then White must have missed a chance to draw with <41. Nb4>.

May-07-08  MarkThornton: From the diagram in my last post, here is the best I have found for Black so far.

52...Bg5+ 53. Kc2 Qc1+ 54. Kb3 Qd1+ 55. Ka2 Qd5+ 56. Ka1 Bd2!

click for larger view

Black's plan is to restrict the Nb7, keep his Queen and Bishop close to the opponent's King, guard the squares in front of the e-pawn and then advance it. One possible continuation is <57. Qb8+ Ke4 58. Nd6+ Kd3 59. Nb5 e5>

Realistically, Black cannot force a win here, as White must be able to exchange Black's final pawn for his knight. But Black does have enough initiative to make White work for the draw.

To sum up: in a rapid game, Black has excellent chances, at classical time-limits, he has a few chances, in a correspondence game, it's a draw.

May-11-08  hms123: <rinus> I have opened my forum and would value your input. Here is the theme: Engine use. I have been collecting suggestions for how to use chess engines effectively. As I get time, I will post them in the forum. Others are encouraged to post their tips here as well. Off-theme comments are also welcome.
May-14-08  MarkThornton: <rinus> Your latest analysis of C Van de Loo vs M Hesseling, 2008 is fascinating. I have posted a couple of replies for you to consider.
May-22-08  MarkThornton: <rinus> I haven't forgotten your analysis on C Van de Loo vs M Hesseling, 2008, but I am about to go on holiday, and my analysis of your analysis is still inconclusive. The lines that you came up with are tricky!

Best wishes,
