I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

Sneaky: I assume you mean the anecdote in my profile? Thanks.

I wonder what became of some of those people who used to hang out at that chess park in Miami's South Beach. It was a rather unsavory place, to tell the truth. A lot of homeless people used it as a shelter at night, people would panhandle, con-men would look for their "marks", and kids on bicycles would drive through and discretely sell little bags of marijuana. But I never saw any violence take place, and I never saw any hard drugs there, so I felt comfortable. I met a lot of interesting characters at that place.

Open Defence: heh! thanks, that pic was taken about 10 years ago... I hope to have not aged significantly since then :)
Jun-05-09  GeauxCool: My dad had a friend who lived in Homestead, who's home was totally destroyed by hurricane Andrew. He said that the criminal element wasn't so bad in Miami, either. That more cash changed hands over dominoes than over drugs.

Anyway, thanks for THAT anecdote as well. I was originally referring to the John Medeski story - quite entertaining!

Sneaky: < I was originally referring to the John Medeski story - quite entertaining!> Ohhhh, THAT anecdote. Yes I find it amusing as well. Medeski was one of those kids so full of talent that nobody had any doubt that one day he would etch out a name for himself in the jazz world. In fact, as a child of single mother, my mother was dating a doctor for a while who was also an amateur jazz musician (a trumpeter). The good doctor told me one day "I'm going to jam tonight with one of your schoolmates. This kid one day will be world-class. WORLD CLASS I TELL YOU!"

When I heard that Medeski had become the leader of the one the most popular modern jazz bands, it made me smile, but it didn't surprise me in the least. I've never seen him play live, but I've seen videos on the internet. He certainly never "sold out"; he plays hardcore jazz for hardcore jazz fans. Those who don't get his music probably never will, and I'm sure that's fine with John.

Jul-22-09  Knight13: <Sneaky> Hey, I live in Florida too! Do you still play over-the-board? Any chance you played in US Class Championship in Boca Raton this past weekend? :-)

Sneaky: <Sneaky> <Hey, I live in Florida too!> Do you? I didn't know that! <Do you still play over-the-board?> Only with friends lately, but I would be up for a chess tournament. <Any chance you played in US Class Championship in Boca Raton this past weekend?> Oh man did I miss that? I thought there was some big event coming up soon in Florida. Labor Day weekend is always good for chess.

Wonder what's with all of these black helicopters flying around?? And why do they all say IDEA on them? :-D

Oct-09-09  technical draw: Um, <sneaky> I have noticed that you are dead last in the chess bookie rankings. Which means I am proudly ahead of you like everybody else! You just resting for the finals?
Oct-10-09  eightsquare: <Sneaky> You sure are dead last in the chess bookie rankings. :) BTW , nice game collections.

Sneaky: I guess it's my style. I make more and more radical bets until I'm either "worst or first". Well I qualified for the finals last leg so if I don't place #1 it doesn't really matter where I place. I guess there is a strange pride in being the absolute cellar-dweller. All it takes is to log in daily and make some really bad decisions.

Sneaky: MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!! I was out of town, so I missed the CG xmas fest (mostly), but great to see my CG friends come by on Xmas. Thanks to all of you.

<USCF 1800 is equivalent to FIDE's what? thanks..> I don't think FIDE wastes their time with players like me HAHA, no just kidding. I've heard "it's harder in FIDE" and I don't doubt that's true, exactly how harder I have no idea.

Sneaky: Benzol -- I just picked it from the avatar list (back in the golden era when there was only one page of them to choose from!) It was the only one that fit my handle, but it really fit it well!

Looking at your link I'd say there is a definite resemblance. Maybe that's where CG got it from. If it's not that, my next best guess it that it comes from a logo on a bottle of hot-sauce.

Jan-28-10  Silverstrike: Hi there, I know we played the odd correspondence here and there a while back, how would you feel like giving it another shot? I haven't played chess so I'm undoubtedly rather rusty :P

Sneaky: Hi SS -- honestly the situation is that I am swamped this month, big business contract takes up all my time. I only visit chessgames to play ChessBookie and watch the occasional live broadcast.

Check back in with me in a few weeks, I like the idea but I lack the time. I forget, is it my turn for White now?
