I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

Sneaky: <Congratulations for successfuly starting yet another war on RJF page> I do my best! ;-)

<<Other players who I admire: ..., Diemer,... > Diemer? I´ve heard Donner called him "a maniac" in one of his book. Wasn´t he a fan of nazis?> Emil Joseph Diemer was more than a fan of Nazis, he was a Nazi. He was the "official chess reporter of the Great German Reich" and got flown all over the world to cover important chess events with Hitler & Co. footing the bill.

Of course that's not why I admire him, I admire him for his outrageously original ideas on the chessboard. But since you brought it up, I'll add that I don't disparage somebody because they were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's not like German citizens received a ballot one day where they could check off on "Allies" or "Axis", you know what I mean?

Look at this game for a real treat - NN vs E J Diemer, 1978 By the time checkmate has come, Diemer has sacrificed a pawn, two rooks, and the queen!

Feb-26-06  Raskolnikov: Thank you for this answer. The sympathies of people are sometimes irrational but as I read the bio of Emil Joseph Diemer I thought thats why some people see chessplayers as "nerds"

Feb-27-06  refutor: who is your email provider? you need to get the POP3 information from them...the username and password are your email accounts username and password (that was was kinda obvious). for the incoming mail server it is normally something like mail.youremail.com. you'll have to contact your email provider to get the "POP3" settings
Feb-27-06  Joshka: <refutor> Why thanks for taking my question!:-) Ahhh i was afraid of that asnwer;-)...my email provider is AOL. Enough said;-)

<Sneaky> I remember that you were the first kibitzer's comment I've ever read on this site. I think it was in a Benko vs Fischer game or something I don't know.

Mar-03-06  64 Squares: Sneaky, what's your rating at these days?
Mar-03-06

Sneaky: I've only played in one tournament in the last 3 years (US Open in '04) so my official rating probably doesn't reflect my true strength. With that disclaimer aside, it's just over 1800. My performance rating at the US Open was around 2000 so I think with a little effort and a return to tournaments I should be able be able to get out of the alphabet-club. And that's all I ever really wanted.

The way I see it, experts know things that A-B-C players don't know. But experts and masters pretty much know the same stuff, it's just that the masters, well, they've masted it!

<...Bg8> yes that's the tactic. I guess you'd call this a clearance sac? h7 must be cleared out so the queen can get there. ...g6 would let him off the hook if it weren't for the fact that f7 is underdefended. As a GM once said, "all tactics are really double attacks."

Mar-03-06  blingice: <Sneaky> What if black moves g6? Wouldn't the queen threat be taken away on both levels?
Mar-04-06

Sneaky: 1.Bg8! g6; 2. Nxf7+ Rxf7; 3. Bxf7 and White not only wins the exchange but is threatening Qxg6 etc.

WannaBe: Got a question for you <Sneaky>. Currently reading 'My System' which I know you have recommended to others and probably have it yourself more times than I can count. Plus you have a great understanding of the game itself.

Nimz. mentioned of picking a square and focus on it, (Chap. 2? 3? Don't have the book in front of me.) is this square determined by which kind of opening is used? Or pick the weakest square in the middle game? Or do I arbitrary pick a square?

Much appreciated, thanks in adv.

Mar-07-06  Stevens: hey <sneaky>. I wonder if you can help with a question i have. I figure you are a knowledgable (sp) who uses Fritz and the like. My question is : is there a formula of sorts to calculate someones rating if they play a certain amount of games vs a rated opponent. ie if play 10 games vs an 1800 rated opponent, and my rating performance (as calculated by fritz) shows to be -94, does this mean my estimated rating would be 1706? Or would that be true after 20 games? Or 100?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Or if you know anyone who would know the answer?

This is a deep question and I'd like to tackle it but I don't feel qualified to answer. I will dig up my copy of Nimzowitsch's book and get back here. Anybody else who wants to tackle this in the meantime, be my guest.

Sneaky: <Stevens> One way to estimate a rating based on a small number of games is this: make a list of numbers, and each number is (a) your opponent's rating if you drew them, (b) 400+your opponent's rating if you beat them, (c) your opponent's rating - 400 if you lost to them. Then average all of those numbers.

The USCF uses that formula to compute provisional ratings.

Mar-08-06  Stevens: hey, thanks sneaky. But i was wondering if a calculation could be done using the performance rating given in the table view of a specific match in fritz.

However, in you example, if i play 10 games vs a 1600 player, and i get +4-2=4 my rating would be estimated at (4x2000)+(2x1200)+(4x1600) divided by 10 = 1680.

Sound about right with that performance against that rated opponent? I better start playing some games!

Thanks again

My rating based on Sneaky's performance rater is approximately 2300. I have played many games against Fritz8 (on my laptop maybe it plays like a 2700) and lost all of them. :)

Mar-09-06  Stevens: <who> ha ha! yes, i guess that formula relies on a spread of results rather than all 0's!
