 | | Sneaky: I vote <Magnus Carlsen> for Best Player. I arrived at this conclusion through what I call the Theorem of 'DUH'. |
|
Jan-17-13 | | Abdel Irada: <I reckon being in the Rogoff page, his posts say nothing of chess. He may be most informed in most subjects...but if he lacks basic chess awareness he does not deserve the plum- we are looking for most informed chess guro ...not a jeopardy game show contestant. Let him prove me wrong by posting about Wesley So and his potential then I may reverse my stand.> Why do you sound so much like <magnifico>? |

 | | HeMateMe: Why not just call it "ELO player of the year"? seems boring to me. 1. Fabio had a breakout year, jumped from No. 17 to No. 5, gaining 45 points, as someone above mentioned. 2. Boris Gelfand, perhaps underestimated by many people, won the Candidates matches and nearly beat Anand to win the title. He wasn't even nominated. 3. People who play for the world championship are special. 4. I'm really, really happy that no one from "the World" voted for themselves [though they secretly wanted to]. 5. Who is Feona Mutesi? |
|
Jan-17-13
 | | OhioChessFan: Another 25 minutes of voting, so no arguing please. As always, this page is available for disuptes per the Caissars and everything else: Argue |
|
Jan-18-13 | | Abdel Irada: One question before we close out voting: Do we count votes from sockpuppets? |
|
Jan-18-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <Abdel Irada> Under "Other rules" in the profile section above: <If you have more than one Chessgames account you are welcome to participate in this process but you must choose *ONE* account to use only. Sockpuppetry shan't be tolerated.> I would like to thank <Chessgames> for maintaining this tradition. If I may make a suggestion, you might consider setting up a private voting booth in the future. This would better automate the counting process, but most importantly get voting away from the distractions which are the inevitable outcome of a forum such as this. Of course this forum should remain, but not as a place for voting. Voting has been public in the past simply because that was the only way to contact the person counting the votes. If you are willing to continue this, I think a private process would encourage even greater participation. Of course there would have to be safeguards against ballot stuffing and sockpuppetry, but I would hope those could be overcome. It might not hurt to consider making the nomination process private as well, though I have a feeling that won't fly. |
|
Jan-18-13 | | Abdel Irada: Good points all, <Phony Benoni>. If the process could be made private, much squabbling would cease for want of cause. The one question is a practical one: How could this idea be implemented? |
|
Jan-18-13 | | Blunderdome: CG has private voting for the consultation games, I'm sure they could set one up for this. I prefer public voting, though. |
|
Jan-18-13 | | Abdel Irada: <Blunderdome: I prefer public voting, though.> Why? |

Jan-18-13
 | | The Caissars: Do I even need to do a count? ;-)
Congratulations to <Magnus Carlsen> for being the Player of 2012, and congratulations to all of the people who won Caissars this years. Plus, thanks to all of you for participating. As most of you know this is the first year CG has taken over this function, so we approached it somewhat conservatively and didn't want to change things much. Perhaps next year we'll change the proceedings somewhat, but we have an entire year to discuss that. |

शुक्रिया आप को!! ありがとう!! Thank You!! |

 | | Sneaky: I've never paid much attention to the Caissars in previous years (beyond gracefully accepting my few accolades) but it would have been a crying shame to see the tradition stop. With that in mind I'd like to nominate <The Caissars> for some kind of post-ceremony recognition. From what I can tell you guys did it as well as in previous years, and bravo for that! |

 | | OhioChessFan: Thanks much. |
|
Jan-18-13 | | Blunderdome: <Abdel> Well, there's no cash prizes. All of the fun is in getting together to recognize the people who contributed during the year. You would really take away some of the party by silencing the voting. I thought the point of a secret ballot was to protect people who might be persecuted for their political beliefs, unpopular choices, etc. Surely, that can't be a concern here. |
|
Jan-18-13 | | chesstoplay: < The Caissars > and < cg.com > Great fun!!
TY!

Salamat (thanks) for hosting 2012! Looking forward in 2013 and perpetually ever :) Congrats to all the winners and those who were nominated! |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Blunderdome: I thought the point of a secret ballot was to protect people who might be persecuted for their political beliefs, unpopular choices, etc. Surely, that can't be a concern here.> Perhaps it shouldn't be. But it is. Or at least some fear it could be, whether their fears are justified or not. Voters should not be disenfranchised if they prefer to keep their choices private. This forum should be kept open, probably serving as a spot for some friendly electioneering. But I don't think a voter should have to visit it if they prefer not to. Having a private voting booth or survey, besides making the count easier, could avoid the problems of early/late voting and votes not cast in the proper format. |
