The Caissars: Thank you for participating in the 2019 Caissars! We apologize for the very delayed start, which probably contributed to the difficulty of selecting deserving candidates, and will do our best to run the Caissars at the beginning of January in the future. <And now here are ...

Jan-06-13  morfishine: I nominate <perfidious> as Best Historian

I nominate <FSR> as Best Historian

I nominate <Honza Cervenka> for Best Analysis

Jan-06-13  Abdel Irada: Is there a category for Most Annoying Troll?

If not, a poster in this forum reminds me why there should be.

Jan-06-13  Jim Bartle: Anybody who would simply nominate <tolengoy> in all available categories is not to be taken seriously. Anybody who says he will nominate someone as Player of the Year this <and in the next years to come>, when the games to determine Player of the Year have yet to be played, is not to be taken seriously.

How can tolengoy be nominated for best avatar when he doesn't have one, best game collection when he doesn't have one, best profile when he doesn't have one, or best analysis when he has never analyzed a game?

Then we have the problem in the voting when magnifico can easily vote five to ten times using his different usernames.

Jan-06-13  Abdel Irada: <Then we have the problem in the voting when magnifico can easily vote five to ten times using his different usernames.>

That, of course, is the sort of reason FICS and many other sites and servers absolutely forbid creating duplicate accounts, and enforce that rule with zeal and vigilance.

While nothing is at stake in this "contest," the mere existence of any contest at all seems to be sufficient motivation for certain personalities to "game the system" to the extent possible.

Amen to that. btw, CG.com doesn't forbid duplicate accounts. It <does> forbid using such accounts to vote more than once:

<If you have more than one Chessgames account you are welcome to participate in this process but you must choose *ONE* account to use only.>

Jan-06-13  Abdel Irada: I have one word, incidentally, to describe duplicate nominations: inevitable.

As this forum continues to grow in length, it becomes increasingly difficult to scan all of its contents to ensure that one is *not* repeating someone else's nomination. I think it's unreasonable to demand that anyone attempt to do so.

The admins are quite capable of compiling a list of nominees from the names occurring in this document (the forum viewed as text when nominations are formally taken) — may even have automated this part of the process — and will do so despite our collective best efforts to foil them.

Annie K.: <AI> of course they will. These lists are not for them; they are meant to help participants see more easily who hadn't been nominated yet - exactly because the forum is growing too long.

I've too often seen people remembering that they would have liked to vote for more candidates during the voting stage, but by then they can't, because these members had not been nominated. So now is the time to look around and fill in those names, and that is the purpose of the recap.

Nobody actually expects duplicate nominations to be eliminated entirely. :)

I'm at work now, so will catch up with the updates later. ;p

jessicafischerqueen: I don't think we need worry about sockpuppet voting, because the admins are running the show.

They have a record of IP addresses and account creations that should make it easy to prevent such shenanigans.

Jan-07-13  hms123: I nominate <frogbert> for best avatar.
Jan-07-13  benjinathan: At the risk of being a jerk, what is the point of the nominations? Would it not be easier to simply have a vote?

I found this which sort of reflects my view and which does not appear to apply here:

<A nomination process provides an electorate with the assurance that an implied level of support exists for a candidate before consideration by the entire electorate. This allows the voter to limit his consideration to the serious candidates who are guaranteed to garnish support from at least some members of the electorate. A candidate who receives a strong nomination commands an increased likelihood of success in the final balloting>

Perhaps the nomination process is for the purpose of making a lot of people feel good by providing recognition to many without wasting a vote on them?

Which is fine by me.

As far as I can tell, all that very much applies here - plus, having a list of candidates to pick from means the risk of simply forgetting about someone highly qualified is much lower.

Jan-07-13  Blunderdome: <SwitchingQuylthulg> I don't think this process creates much in the way of "implied support," since it only takes one nomination to make someone a candidate, and every user has unlimited nominations.

SwitchingQuylthulg: One supporter is one more than most members have. One supporter plus you makes two supporters, and two supporters are a snowball waiting to happen. Considering people have won Caissars on the strength of three votes...
