TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

Aug-16-08  hitman84: A Bolt out of the blue!

What a run! It was as though he knew it already that he would break the record the way he started celebrating before the finish line! Amazing feat!

TheAlchemist: It's not inconceivable that he could break Michael Johnson's fantastic 200m record of 19.32, and also the 4x100 relay should be pretty strong with Bolt, Powell, Frater (all finalists) and the 4th runner is surely fast as well, they could also break the 37.40 world record held by the US. But there perfect exchanges are also required.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <TheAlchemist: But there perfect exchanges are also required.>

Jamaica is more than a second's worth of leg-speed up on the French team that ran 37.79 at Split EC. Considering that, they can afford messing up a bit with the exchanges. (That said, I still don't think they'll break the WR.)

Aug-17-08  hitman84: Federer and Wawrinka won the doubles gold. I guess Federer is somewhat happy. I expected them to win as they were playing tired Swedes who won a marathon match against France in the semis. They won the decider 19-17 which lasted almost 3 hours :)

The Russian girls are set to take the gold and silver in women's singles. It's going to be difficult to call the winner, but I think Safina will win. Russia is set to make a clean sweep as Zvonereva is trashing Li Na.

<Nadal will probably win the gold medal and then the US open title next month. Federer was owning these grand slams for a while, but now the baton has been passed. Will the Fed come back strong next year, or will he be Nadal's whipping boy from here on in? We'll find out.>

I expect Federer to come back strongly, but he can't match Nadal's fitness. He has to play only a few select events like Kasparov used to do. BTW Blake just played the best tennis of his life against Federer; he is one of the best hard court players I've ever seen.

TheAlchemist: An incredible dejavu in the men's triple rifle position, like 4 years ago, American Matthew Emmons had a big lead before the last shot, 4 years ago he shot into the wrong target, this year he only hit a 4.4 and slid down to 4th place, in the process giving our Rajmond Debevec the bronze. Debevec was leading after the qualifying round and seemingly blew everything away with his first and third final shot.

And here it gets even more complicated, 4 years ago Debevec had, after Emmons' error a chance for gold, but he made a bad shot himself and ended up 4th. In what turned out to be his 2nd chance, he made an almost perfect final shot (10.8) and finsihed 3rd

Aug-17-08  hitman84: LOL its not at all suprising - that's how it goes in these shooting events. Consistency is the key as the placings keep changing with every shot. The first shot and the last shot are very important from what I know.
Aug-17-08  chessmoron: <TheAlchemist> I was going to write something but fearing that no one watch it I didn't write it.

That Emmons guy choked BIG time...leading by 4 at the end of 9th Round and just choked scoring a 4.4 (death) and China miraculously from nowhere from 3rd to Gold Medal.

TheAlchemist: Yes!!! Our first gold after of these games and the first one since Sydney, Primoz Kozmus in the men's hammer throw.
Aug-17-08  hitman84: Congrats!
Aug-18-08  chessmoron: Jeezies Louises...Liu Xiang vs Dayron Robles not going to happen. Liu Xiang strained his Achilles heel. I was going to wish an Asian descent to repeat a event that is dominated by African descent. That is disheartening.

I'm really upset about the coach.

Aug-18-08  YouRang: <TheAlchemist: Phelps won no. 7 today in the 100m butterfly, this time a great final stroke by him won him gold by .01 over Serbian Milorad Cavic, who had been ahead almost the whole time. I saw the replay a few times and I wasn't really convinced >

It appears to be unbelieveable, doesn't it? Some things to notice:

- At the end, Cavic is "gliding" (i.e. slowing) through the water with his arms extended, while Phelps is taking one last stroke (accelerating) followed by a quick lunge for the wall. This difference in speed in the final moment makes it so difficult to tell.

- Cavic lifted his head above the water to look ahead, which (I hear) is a swimming no-no since it increases drag.

- It appears (to me anyway) that Phelps may have first hit the wall above the water level, which makes it hard to see from the underwater cameras.

- It is, after all, just 1/100th of a second. I'm not sure it's even possible for a person in that time to fairly see both swimmers well enough to tell who touched first.

- Perhaps there is an issue with the sensitivity of the equipment. Phelps, with his final lunge almost certainly hit the wall harder than Cavic, which might cause his time to register sooner even if they actually made initial contact at the same time.

Here is a very slow-motion video:

TheAlchemist: <Liu Xiang vs Dayron Robles not going to happen>

It's a great pity, I was really looking forward to it as well. I feel very sorry for Liu, I think he was preparing all his career for this moment and an injury prevented him from competing. I can only imagine the great pressure he was under which probably caused him to overwork himself and train like crazy. In the end, even the greatest athletes are only humans, with a human body that has its limits. A tragedy, but I hope it will serve as a warning for the future, though, honestly, I doubt it.

TheAlchemist: Now a happier news, Britain's Rebecca Romero won gold today in the cycling on track. 4 years ago she won silver with the British quartet in rowing (!). I think this is the first time an athlete won 2 medals at consecutive summer olympics in 2 different sports.

Aug-19-08  achieve: Marianne Vos sailed home with GOLD by winning the Points Race! (Cycling, Track)

Only 21, and THE cycling talent at every discipline!

<Romero> Incredible double! At two different events.

Usain Bolt's style of sprinting, along with Phelps' Freestyle 200m, and Isinbayeva's pole vault, are among the most enjoyable, almost poetical, technically outstanding performances at these Olympics in Beijing.

Anyone has other contenders or performances that made them go: aaaaahhhh

??

TheAlchemist: <achieve> If I have to exclude our competitors :-), I also liked the Chinese divers (all of them were so far ahead of the competition it was almost embarassing :-)), the Korean Choi Min Ho in the men's 60kg in judo, there's Rafael Nadal, Kenenisa Bekele, there were some amazing gymnastics performances, and probably many events I didn't/couldn't see...

I guess you especially look forward to the table tennis finals?

Aug-19-08  achieve: <TheAlchemist> Oh YESS!!

The team final was already a treat, with german's Timo Boll being the one of two or three Europeans able to beat one or two Chinese top players in succession... But he lost to Ma Lin and that was that...

Will Boll be able to upset the Chinese team of Ma Lin, Wang Liqin and Wang Hao in the singles event??

Tough call, but he will be a big outsider.

Samsonov has an even more outside chance, IMO.

But beautiful play to watch, both technically, as well as mentally.

TheAlchemist: <achieve> I was just watching the repeats, too bad about Epke Zonderland in the high bar, I really liked his (spectacular) routine up to the failed Kolman, maybe he could even have won a medal without the fall, though spectacular isn't always viewed as best by the judges (see Alexei Nemov in 2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMH... ), and I can't really understand why dismounts aren't more favored instead of various grips etc., since they're at least as difficult (some are much more) and they're the real characteristic of the apparatus. And it's exactly the dismounts that make it one of my personal favorite events of the whole Olympics and surely the highlight of the gymnastics competition, (traditionally it's the last event after all).

Aargh, I guess I'm still disappointed by the fact our Aljaz Pegan wasn't even allowed to participate because of the idiotic rules. Oh, well...

Aug-19-08  DukeAlba: <TheAlchemist>

Hi, I didn't know there was an Olympic forum here on CG!

In that case I'm here representing Cuba :) I predict we'll take the majority of gold medals in boxing. We'll also win baseball, and we have a good chance of getting another gold or silver with the ladies volleyball team.

It kinda sucks that we didn't get to win any gold medals in Judo. We got 3 silver and 2 bronze. Usually we get at least one.

Cuba's now 1 5 5 11

I think we'll be at 9 6 5 20 by the end of it all :)

Aug-19-08  achieve: <And it's exactly the dismounts that make it one of my personal favorite events of the whole Olympics and surely the highlight of the gymnastics competition> I agree with you there... The dismounts (or flight elements, as we call them here) are simply spectacular, and Epke Zonderland was putting in one heck of a performance.

<Aargh, I guess I'm still disappointed by the fact our Aljaz Pegan wasn't even allowed to participate because of the idiotic rules. Oh, well...> I'm sure you know our 'Lord Of The Rings' Yuri van Gelder? He didn't qualify for the Olympics, yet he dominates the apparatus for quite some time now... That would have been an almost certain Gold for Holland-- but we're doing quite well with 4 Golds, and our waterpolo women's team having reached the final!! Big surprise there, while our beach volley aces Schuil/Nummerdor surprisingly lost in the quarters. Field Hockey offers another two medal chances.

I'm so looking forward to the Men's 200 metres, withthat insanely talented Bolt, and a Dutch guy: Martina, going for a medal!

Aug-20-08  hitman84: <Ma Lin> is in a league of his own!

TheAlchemist: Bolt won the 200m with an incredible 19.30, amazing.

Even the others ran really fast, but they were completely eclipsed. <achieve> Martina won silver!
