Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

TheAlchemist: <goodevans: Will we have another Milan-based pun tomorrow when its two big football teams face each other in the Champions League Semi-Final? https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl... It's a huge reach, but you could call it even timelier. Unfortunately Slovaks call it ...

Aug-12-08  rogge: Hi!

<achieve>,

I somehow get the impression basketball is not your <thing>?

I don't watch it much, but it's fun to see the US NBA stars, they're really something when they decide too.

I believe Spain-USA will be a good one, we'll see how good they really are.

jessicafischerqueen: I' m fine <Captain> thanks for asking. I'm on vacation in Canada and having fun.

Wheat are you up to?

Have you been assigned to <The Manhattan Project> yet?

I advise you to lobby hard for a position there, as I've heard good things about this exciting project.

  TheAlchemist: Good afternoon, <Marie>.

Not yet, but when I do, I'll be coming in with a bang. I heard it's a blast.

I'm happy ou're doing well. It must be a weird feeling going home on vacation, huh?

I'm dividing my time these days between a little work, the Olympics and some studying, so I'm very sleep deprived. It should all normalize after the Olympics.

Well, keep on having fun! And take care of Pierre a bit better.

Aug-12-08  NakoSonorense: The 4x100m Freestyle relay final was insane! Especially because 2 teams broke the previous world record and didn't even win a medal! Unbelievable!

TheAlchemist: Finally, Sara Isakovic won our first medal, a silver in the women's 200m freestyle. An incredible race with the top 3 going faster than the old world record, gold went to Italian Pellegrini and bronze to China's Pang.

Meanwhile, Phelps won his 4th gold medal (and a record breaking 10th overall) with a 4th World Record in the 200m Butterfly, he's really an alien.

Aug-12-08  mckmac: < The Alchemist > Congratulations to Sara Isakovic and Slovenia!!

Just missed the race myself (grrr -- work), but hope to catch it in the highlights later on.World Record too!

Gustav Larrson of Sweden takes Silver

American Levi Leipheimer secures Bronze

Aug-13-08  hitman84: Congrats <TA> WOW that was the closest race I've watched in this oly. I liked the way Isakovic attacked in the end - she was very close to winning a gold.

Our shooters failed to make it to the finals. Our lightweight Boxers and Lee-Hesh are the only hopefuls.

Aug-13-08  chessmoron: Ha! I'm stoked that Liu Zige in WR time got Gold in the Women's 200m fly and Jiao Liuyang 2nd also UNDER WR.

Now we just need a Chinese version of Michael Phelps.

TheAlchemist: <chessmoron> Out of the swimmers right now there doesn't seem to be anyone who could win even a few medals, they're all more or less competing in 1 or 2 individual disciplines (at least at world class level). He/she still needs to be produced :-)
Aug-14-08  hitman84: <TA>You are right they need to be produced(not reproduced) Phelps is an alien being :)

Federer lost to Blake and will now take on Lee-Hesh in the doubles. Lose Federer lose! :)

Aug-15-08  arifattar: And somehow Lee-Hesh managed to lose.
Aug-15-08  hitman84: I expected them to lose. Mahesh is now a coach and doesn't play too much tennis - he runs his academy. Paes was not in form either, but full credit to the Swiss for playing error free tennis. I never knew Federer was such a good doubles player. Wawrinka was pretty good too his service was excellent.

TheAlchemist: Yes!! We have medal no. 2, Lucija Polavder just won bronze in the women's over 78kg in judo!

TheAlchemist: A really great match between Nadal and Djokovic, with the Spaniard just edging out his opponent. A bit of an anticlimactic ending, though, it must be really tough for Nole.

The other finalist is Fernando Gonzalez, bronze medallist from Athens, who won against James Blake in a 11-9 third set.

Meanwhile, Safina is the last semifinalist, after beating Jankovic. Not a good day for the Serbian team.

Federer and Wawrinka reached the finals after defeating the Bryan twins (though it's hard to cal it a surprise it might be just that). The Swedish pair, who won in the other semifinal won the last set with 19-17 (for a total of almost 5 hours of play!)

Aug-15-08  arifattar: Federer's success in the doubles should throw the 'doubles specialist' concept out of the window I think. If you are a good player you will excel in any form of the game.

chancho: Nadal will probably win the gold medal and then the US open title next month. Federer was owning these grand slams for a while, but now the baton has been passed. Will the Fed come back strong next year, or will he be Nadal's whipping boy from here on in? We'll find out.
Aug-15-08  chessmoron: Somebody is happy at the Beijing Olympics:

Wait...can this be allowed in China?

TheAlchemist: Meanwhile, in the women's tennis singles it will be an all-Russian final, Dementieva-Safina. Even with some of their best missing (Sharapova and Chakvetadze above all), they could win all three medals (Zvonareva-Li for 3rd place)
Aug-16-08  arifattar: The Russians are having a tough time in the boxing ring though. Three World Champions from Russia have lost in the initial rounds.

TheAlchemist: Phelps won no. 7 today in the 100m butterfly, this time a great final stroke by him won him gold by .01 over Serbian Milorad Cavic, who had been ahead almost the whole time. I saw the replay a few times and I wasn't really convinced (though it was 4AM here and I wasn't exactly the most focused :-)), I think Cavic touched first, maybe he didn't press hard enough. British Rebecca Adlington broke Janet Evans' 19-year-old record in the 800m freestyle.

Later today the men's 100m (at 22.30 local time), the slight favorite seems Bolt, the ease with which he ran 9.92 in the heats was really impressive. I think he might even win with a new world record.

It's really, really close, too close to see in realtime.

TheAlchemist: Bolt and Powell routinely made the finals, they should have no problem bringing Jamaica gold and silver, especially since Gay didn't make the finals (!), which is surely the biggest uspet so far in the athletics competitions.

TheAlchemist: I guess Bolt is another alien camouflaged as human, what a run, he's like a gazelle and even though he started celebrating before the finish line, he still managed an incredible record 9.69
