Aug-11-08 | | hitman84: Well noted :) Oh! our hockey administration is completely useless - not professional enough and no money. Recently our hockey technical advisor Ric Charlseworth quit.. Here is an interview:
http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=FKI65... You can't expect the players to keep on performing well without any help from the govt. and stupid officials. But yes it was shocking that they failed to qualify; they were playing after a long lay off and went easy on the weaker teams. Australia or The Netherlands will probably win the gold in hockey. |
Aug-11-08 | | hitman84: Phelps was spectacular indeed!
<Will he make it a magic <8>?> I'm pretty sure he'll make it.
Aug-11-08 | | chessmoron: <hitman84> Congrats on India's first gold. Made the Chinese silver medalist cry like a baby. |
Aug-11-08 | | hitman84: <chessmoron>Thanks. I don't know anything about the event and find the scoring confusing. I didn't see him crying :) But the bronze medalist from Finland was frustrated from what I saw on TV. China will win a heap of golds in Badminton and Table Tennis and I'm sure they will end up with the highest medals tally. |
Aug-11-08 | | chessmoron: <hitman84> I saw the Chinese in the press conference and he couldn't contain himself. He was sobbing excessively. I wish the Chinese govt stop pressuring the athletes so much. |
Aug-11-08 | | hitman84: <chessmoron>I was a gymnast when I was 11 years old. The training regimen was very tough and I quit when I twisted my neck badly. I saw some videos of very young children being trained just for the sake of winning golds in Olympics which I think should be stopped. |
Aug-11-08 | | arifattar: The Chinese have been catching up on the Americans lately. They were second in Athens, 4 short of the Americans. These Olympics could be the one where the baton changes hands. |

Aug-11-08 | | chessmoron: <chancho> Thanks. I find it shocking that North Korea has more medals than Canada. Just WOW! What is Canada thinking? It's not a trip to vacation...win some medals!! |

 | | TheAlchemist: Well, a crappy day for us, two of our favorites have blown it big time. When you have only something like 5 or 6 potential candidates, losing one is a big blow, hopefully we'll bounce back in other disciplines. |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: < TheAlchemist > Chin up bro'.Early days still. |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: < The Alchemist > & < achieve > Frankly Gentlemen, medal counts mean diddly squat to me.What really matters is individual effort -- and in the team sports too. Four fourths can be more 'important' than six Golds, witness our own Bruce Biddle, in Munich, 1972. |
Aug-12-08 | | achieve: <mckmac>--<Frankly Gentlemen, medal counts mean diddly squat [...]> In all honesty, you are right.
The curse of "score-board journalism" has gotten us by the tail, too. I promise improvement in that regard, Sir. |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: <achieve> ...but we're still putting the House on Lars Boom.Right?!!. |
Aug-12-08
 | | TheAlchemist: <mckmac> I'm mostly disappointed for the athletes, of course I have expectations, but they're mostly based on what I feel they're capable of (and I sincerely wish for them), none I think are (too) unrealistic. I can only imagine what they must feel after 4 years of hard work and then, e.g. in judo you're out in the 1st round after 30 seconds. Or our competitor in the kayak, who had flown through the qualifiers and had another very good semifinal run, but because of the penalties he was out of the final. Destiny? Bad luck? Whatever you may call it, we've had our fair share of it in all sports and it's quite frustrating :-) But you're right, the medal counts are little more than "trivia", maybe some teams get additional reward money for the overall finish. Of course it's nice to be at the top, but since 1896 maybe 6 or 7 nations have finished 1st in the overall standings (let's see, US, UK, Germany, USSR, Sweden, France, maybe I missed some). Or just being ahead of some rival/neighbouring nation for bragging rights. |
Aug-12-08 | | achieve: <mckmac: <achieve> ...but we're still putting the House on Lars Boom.Right?!!.> RIGHT!!
Boom can carry the weight; he's like Atlas!
<TheAlchemist> Pretty balanced view, I'd say. ;-) Do you know why Shaq wasn't selected for the US team? |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: < achieve > & < The Alchemist > Just in case I get branded with cryptology (ooh please) -- a little background. Biddle crossed the line in fourth place after Kuiper powered away from the break. The Bronze Medalist tested positive and although Bruce presented himself to 'Doping Control' he has never got his medal.Yet. |
Aug-12-08
 | | TheAlchemist: <achieve> I don't think he wants to play anymore, he isn't young anymore and I think he alyways had problems with injuries (imagine him now) and took summers off for regeneration. |
Aug-12-08 | | achieve: <TheAlchemist> Thanks - Of course... I saw him coming up at the time Jordan quit, but didn't realize it was THAT long ago... I found the centers in both the China as well as the Angola games not that impressive. <Biddle> No medal?? !@#$ |
Aug-12-08
 | | TheAlchemist: <mckmac> Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_...) they say he was never tested. Weird. Anyway, it's a shame, but I guess even if he did receive it, even if after a few days, let alone years, it wouldn't be the same. But if some files (if they weren't already destroyed) came out, wouldn't they have to change almost all medallists say in Seoul in athletics or swimming? For example, why they didn't take Lewis' 1988 medals yet is still a mystery to me (he was found positive 3 times before the event, but since he "didn't know", he was cleared). The men's individual all-around in Athens was a disaster in a different way, I'm sure you've at least heard about it. Anyway, I guess the olympic spirit and fair play disappear when given the option of returning a medal you didn't deserve. I can only think of such an example in the ski jumping world championship, but that's about it. |

I saw some videos of very young children being trained just for the sake of winning golds in Olympics which I think should be stopped.> I agree with this. This has been very common, but I do think it is getting bettor these days. The Chinese are realizing that such a system would be bound to produce a high burnout and injury rate, as well as producing athletes who really don't have much interest and passion in the sport, and they are changing their method somewhat. There are more and more Chinese athletes who are no longer "mass-produced", and who began their carriers outside of government-run sport institutions. (I believe Liu Xiang, the 110m hurdlist, is an example.) We still have a long way to go though. |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: < Captain > Thanks for that link. Our 'point' is that Biddle was turned away from the 'Doping Control Caravan', and told no-sample-is-required.So we have a big beef with the Olympic Movement itself. |
Aug-12-08
 | | TheAlchemist: <mckmac> Ah, yes, of course. Only the top 3 were probably being tested at the time. I would test a few more just as a precaution. Well, what can you do? Sometimes the international sporting organizations/associations/federations or whatever are so blatantly absurd (and corrupt) it's sickening. And the worst part is, mostly they just enjoy preserving the status quo. Why are some organizations run by 80+ year olds who live in the past |
Aug-12-08 | | mckmac: < The Alchemist > "And the worst part is, mostly they just enjoy preserving the status quo. Why are some organizations run by 80+ year olds who live in the past" It's all 'business' bro'. |

Aug-12-08 | | Xenon Oxide: <TheAlchemist>
Sorry, I am not quite following the discussion about doping here. Are you referring to a recent incident in the Beijing Olympics? |
