TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: Ok, the first day is over, with some very exciting moments, it's even been good for my country as well (I hope it means even better things are to come :-))

19 countries have already won a medal, with the top 10 being as follows (gold - silver - bronze - total) :

China 2 0 0 2
USA 1 1 1 3 (a sweep in the women's sabre)
South Korea 1 1 0 2
Czech Rep. & Romania 1 0 0 1
Italy, Austria, Cuba, Russia & Turkey 0 1 0 1

Aug-10-08  achieve: <Swimming>

First historic <<< GOLD MEDAL >>> for the Dutch Women's 4 x 100 meters Freestyle Team!

To leave the Super Powers USA and Australia in their trail is just extra-ordinary.

Now let's see if we, over the next few days, can add another historic GOLD, with three consecutive Gold medals on the 100 M Freestyle, for Mr. Pieter van den Hoogenband, as he tries to improve on Popov's 2 consecutives; this will prove very difficult, but there is a small chance he'll pull it off.

<Marianne Vos> will have good chances to win the women's Road Race today.

Netherlands 1 0 1 = 2

Aug-10-08  achieve: This guy's worth a (second) mention here:

<Michael Phelps>

Starting off his bid to win < 8 > gold medals in swimming, surpassing Mark Spitz' < 7 > - Phelps won his first in the 400 meters Medley, thrashing his own world record by gaping 1.5 seconds...

The writing is on the wall; this was supposed to be one of his 'more diffcult' events, was expected before hand.

Bit hard to fathom how the heck he can pull it off in these modern times, but I wouldn't bet much against him getting that incredible record.

Aug-10-08  chessmoron: Ian Thorpe said Phelps can't do it.

Phelps is the Posedion of the swimming pool. 3 more gold medal....he will have be the most decorated athlete.

Aug-10-08  achieve: <Poseidon> Indeed. Perfection in the water?

Well, his first slashing of the world record, but more so the style with which he cruised the last 100 Freestyle, was what impressed me the most. In fact I haven't seen such intimidating style and technique for quite some time. In any sport. The length of his stroke and the leverage... We're dealing with a rare phenomenon here, I feel.

It will be fum to watch Phelps in the other events.

Aug-10-08  achieve: *fun*

TheAlchemist: <chessmoron> In Athens he was close with 6, so who knows...
Aug-10-08  chessmoron: I know. Now he's at 7 gold medals in his career. He needs 3 more gold medals to top Mark Spitz, Larissa Latynina, Paavo Nurmi and Carl Lewis's career golds and be the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.

TheAlchemist: <achieve> Congratulations! Your relay was already the best at the European championships (with the world record), now they added the Olympic title. Especially Veldhuis is incredible, though the decisive advantage was gained by Kromowidjojo and Heemskerk. BTW, Veldhuis' split was 52.58, which was the 3rd best, behind Libby Trickett's 52.34 and Dara Torres' (she's fantastic, she could be a mother to some here) 52.44. It will be very interesting in the individual final, Steffen broke the Olympic record, but it wasn't enough for Germany.

Phelps started in the best way possible, he seems in great form. He completely overshadowed the great performance (European record) by Laszlo Cseh, who is also incredible, but he just can't get close, each time he closes the gap a little, Phelps pulls away. It was also surprising he lost in the backstroke, the only event he should be better. It's interesting to compare their split times, i nevery one Phelps was a bit better and in the end it amounted to quite a big gap:

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/E...

A bit of a surprise (to me) was also Grant Hackett only in 6th place in the 400m freestyle, but he didn't seem himself. Park was great, though. Thorpe's world record still seems out of reach.

Aug-10-08  achieve: <TheAlchemist> Thanks, mate! ;)

Kromowidjojo and Heemskerk, heh, those girls were tremendous!

Thanks for the detailed splits... Do you have a link to the website with all the splits?

I was looking for it re Phelps' Freestyle from the ind. Medley...

Torres is like 41? Not sure, but I overheard something like that... Jeannie Longo is 48 or 50, at the moment in the road race, which will likely end up in a in freestyle swimming; from what I heard it is pouring rain at the finish there...

*splash*

Aug-10-08  achieve: Oh. Oops, I see you already added the site with all the split times! Great minds think alike ;)

TheAlchemist: The first basketball big match has just finished, in the World Championship final repeat Spain demolished Greece with 81-66 with another great defensive performance, they do really look strong. Last year they couldn't handle the pressure in the European Championship final, where they were the absolute favorites, maybe it was a useful experience and made them stronger.

The next match will be another (on paper) close one, Argentina-Lithuania, with the defending champions making their first appearance. Later, the home team face the US team, the home supporters are already extatic in expectation, hopefully the Americans will be "humane" and won't trash them too much :-)

TheAlchemist: <achieve> Yes, I was just about to write about Longo, she's 49(!) and making her 7th Olympic appearance, she's really incredible, she still seems competitive (she was just recently leading the pack, now she's at the back controlling the situation...)

Pity about the weather, it's really pouring...

<Torres is like 41?> Yes.

Aug-10-08  achieve: Congrats to Cooke! But awful weather. No excuse for Vos, though... She rode too much in the back of the bunch, unable to react to Cooke in time. And maybe she just wasn't strong enough in this weather. Two more chances for her, though.

Longo was indeed phenomenal; she still took the lead of the bunch in the climb of the last round, at <<< 49 >>>

Respect!

China-USA: will be fun for the Americans, perhaps? Not sure what the potential of the Chinese is.

Gonna take a few hours nap now - bin up since 5:15 ;)

TheAlchemist: How about this for the Olympic spirit:

Russia's Natalia Paderina and Georgian Nino Salukvadze, who won silver and bronze respectively in the women's 10m air pistol, embrace and call for peace with their gesture.

TheAlchemist: After day 2, 32 countries have already won at least 1 medal, the current top 10 are:

China 6 2 0 8
South Korea 3 2 0 5
USA 2 2 4 8
Japan 2 0 1 3
Czech rep. 2 0 0 2
Italy 1 2 1 4
Netherlands 1 0 1 3
Australia 1 0 1 3
Spain 1 0 1 3
Romania, UK and Thailand 1 0 0 1

Aug-10-08  ravel5184: Hee hee ... I just realized that "Anonymous Blunderers Club" initials are "A B C"!
Aug-10-08  chessmoron: I wish the China vs USA game finished in the 3rd qtr with 4:20 minutes left where China lost by 13. 31 point lost is so embarrassing.

Next up...Spain. Ugh!!

Better than we got in Athens already (0-2-0) and our best events are yet to come! :-)

Aug-11-08  hitman84: India 1 0 0 1

We opened our account with a gold :) Thanks to Abhinav Bindra for his efforts in the 10m air rifle event.

This is our first 'individual' gold in the Olympics ever!

TheAlchemist: <SQ, hitman> Congratulations! I wish I had something to brag about, but our best events haven't started yet. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring good news. :-)

BTW, I expect/hope for 5 medals for us, which would be a record since our independence and equalled overall (in 1928 as part of the Yugoslav team, our gymnasts got 5 medals)

Aug-11-08  hitman84: Good luck <TA>. Our shooters have been performing very well at the world championships. Two more shooting events tomorrow and that's about it :)

And then there's Lee-Hesh playing together in Tennis doubles event. I hope they win a medal this time, but not too optimistic.

I'm hoping for another Federer-Nadal showdown for the olympic gold!

BTW The football grounds looked funny. I think they are playing on some kind of artificial turf.

TheAlchemist: <hitman84> I saw your field hockey team didn't even make it to the Olympics, what happened?
Aug-11-08  achieve: We (the Dutch) are at 1 1 1 3 now!

Whoopaaa!!

Lots of excitement still awaits us - Phelps' Gold at the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay was spectacular!!

Will he make it a magic <8>?
