Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

Jul-10-08  positionalgenius: very nice games, <thealchemist-tpstar> and <thealchemist-robin01>. Some good chess there
Jul-13-08  brankat: Good show in the <Pos.genius> tournament so far. Keep it up!
Jul-22-08  Robin01: <TheAlchemist>I have two more results posted on <positionalgenius's> forum for your crosstable.
Jul-23-08  arsen387: hello <Alchemist>. My compliments about your Game Collection: Brilliancies By "Unknowns". Some really outstanding games. That collection is now on my favourites list

Jul-24-08  hitman84: Hi buddy <TheAlchemist> How are you doing? It's been a long time since I talked to you. Gearing up for the Olympics eh? :) I read about a tourney in your profile long back. What happened? Did the tourney take place?

TheAlchemist: <hitman84> Hi! Whazzup? I'm doing well, but nothing exciting :-)

Unfortunately the tournament didn't take place as it was imagined (classical with one 2700 GM), it ended up being 1 rapid and 1 blitz during a weekend due to lack of sponsors. Such a shame, since the 1958 interzonal was probably one of the best and most significant tournaments of the 20th Century.

It now seems I'll be pretty busy during the Olympics (damnit), I'll try and watch what I can (which will mean very little sleeping), but I'll manage somehow :-)

Jul-27-08  mckmac: <TheAlchemist> Ship Ahoy Captain! It's been a long time.Hope all goes well with you.

Greetings also to <Marco65>,<Zebra>,<Hitman84> and <chessmoron>.

TheAlchemist: Ahoy, <mckmatey>! I'm doing alright, thank you. How about you?

I was just going back through some of our "quarrels" during that game yesterday and now you pop up all of a sudden. Quite a strange coincidence...

Jul-27-08  mckmac: <TheAlchemist> I'm doin' fine thanks. What quarrels? All I remember is a much needed steep learning experience and a great deal of enjoyment.Of course,I am far too timid to actually go back and have a proper look - unlike your good self. One day maybe...:-)

TheAlchemist: Though it hasn't officially started yet, I declare open <The Olympic Forum>.

Everyone is welcome by and post whatever comments they might have.

Like before, I'll try and keep a regular update of the medal count, cover the most important events and post curiosities, although this year I'll be a bit busy. Still, it won't stop me :-)

Some of the highlights:

<Men's 100 m>, final on August 16, with world record holder Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay

<Men's Basketball>, final on August 24, with the last champions Argentina, the US, Spain, Greece, Lithuania, China, ...

<Michael Phelps> will try and break Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals in one games (Munich 1972)

<Tennis>, women's singles final on August 16, men's singles final on August 17

Plus, there are a number of storic battles that will continue this year, which will be introduced as they come.

Anyway, I hope we'll see great battles and with the fewest possible scandals.

Aug-08-08  Where is my mind: Asafa Powell is in good form to get his first Olympic win. http://www.smh.com.au/news/athletic...

TheAlchemist: The first two gold medals have already been awarded, both in women's events, the first one for the Czech Republic in shooting and the second one for the home country in weightlifting. Right now, the men's road race is under way

<...Right now, the men's road race is under way>

It's not a race to democracy is it? =)

TheAlchemist: <WannaBe> Hi, I did now, well, of course the critiques are in place and I agree with many things you wrote, and I know it's an especially important issue to you personally. But I'll still try to focus here only (or as much as possible) on the sporting side, it's politicized enough as it is (I still hate that they show all those politicians attending, who cares about them?).

TheAlchemist: A very exciting finish to the men's road race, Spaniard Samuel Sanchez won (they're winning everything), with Italian Davide Rebellin in 2nd place (on his 37th birthday) and Swiss Fabian Cancellara 3rd (he's also a favorite for the time trial).
Aug-09-08  mckmac: < TheAlchemist > Top ride by Samuel Sanchez.Terrific effort from the evergreen Rebellin.Cancellara was unbelievable!
Aug-09-08  achieve: <Cancellara was unbelievable!>

Don't cancel him out for the Time Triumph, yet.

TheAlchemist: <achieve> Yes, that would be an incredible achievement (no pun intended). Only Ullrich managed to get two medals at the Olympics, he got gold in the road race and a silver in the time trial in 2000 (the time trial is at the Olympics only for the 5th time, and this is the 4th time where we have both races). Maybe someone else managed to do it in the World Championships, but it must have been a long time ago.
Aug-09-08  achieve: <TheAlchemist> You will be my first nominee for this year's Best Informed Kibitzer, for 2008 Caissars! ;)

But yeah, that must have been Ullrich's finest hour, looking back now... Curious here too, if the double medal scoop has been done before, Olympics or WCHs.

TheAlchemist: <achieve> The only recent double medallists at the WCH I could find are either in the U23 section, where Russian Evgeni Petrov who won 2 golds in 2000 (whatever happened with him?) and Dutch Thomas Dekker who won 2 silvers in 2004, and the junior section. In the women's competitions it happened more frequently, though.
Aug-09-08  achieve: <Russian Evgeni Petrov who won 2 golds in 2000 (whatever happened with him?)> You said it... Could be several reasons for that. But one may be that, at the time, Doping was already very much in zwang, in the youth ranks (Espoirs, even Juniors), too... A lot of worries and discussion that evoked from people in Belgium who were willing to speak up about the moral issue raised there, with minors involved. But I am speculating...

Watch out for Marianne Vos, a dutch young woman who indeed is going for a triple gold:

1 Road
2 Time Trial
3 On the piste (indoors - I forgot which event, doh )

Aug-09-08  achieve: Sorry, <Alchemist>, I wasn't clear in my previous post; I meant that the eastern european riders, were thought of as giving in more easily to the Doping possibilities, along with the health dangers involved, than eg young riders from Holland and Belgium. But most of those rumours hardly came out, because of the taboo surrounding the issue, then. There are more examples. But I am still speculating so better not get into that again ;) It all depends on the individual personalities, and the social control within those teams, as well. I think cycling has improved enormously in that respect.

PS - Marianne Vos' third Gold medal attempt will be in the Points Race, Piste/Track.

TheAlchemist: <achieve> Well, I still think there's a long way to go, but I would also like such rigid controls in other sports, in some WADA isn't even allowed near them, etc.
