TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

Feb-18-09  fich: Good afternoon <Alchemist>. The game we had on the Fischer Tour is no stranger to me. 6...a4 is the third time I have encountered the move. First was a blitz game where I drew and the second, a 1 hour timed tournament game which I won.

Round 1 QA Fischer Tribute Tournament 2009

fhazzick-TheAlchemist

1. d4 f5 2. c4 Nf6 3. Nc3 e6 4. Nf3 Bb4 5. Qb3 a5 6. a3 a4 7. axb4 axb3 8. Rxa8 Nc6 9. Nb5 d6 10. Bg5 h6 11. Bxf6 gxf6 12. d5 exd5 13. cxd5 Ne7 14. Nfd4 Nxd5 15. Nxf5 Qd7 16. e4 Nxb4 17. Nbxd6+ cxd6 18. Bb5 Nc6 19. Rxc8+ Qxc8 20. Nxd6+ Ke7 21. Nxc8+ Rxc8 22. Kd2 1-0

My manual analyses will be posted at a later date.

Feb-18-09  nescio: <Thanks for pointing that game out, I haven't seen it before.> I suppose there will be more today. One of the most terrible grandmaster games I have seen is A Matanovic vs J H Donner, 1965 (7...d6??, 21.Qxh6???)

TheAlchemist: <nescio> Thanks! I've actually decided to put it in Game Collection: The Best Of The Worst instead.
Feb-27-09  Travis Bickle: <TheAlchemist> I think this was Queens first hit and probably my favorite.

Feb-28-09  meloncio: Hi, young Alchemist. Flamenco is not my favorite kind of music but here's a very special Paco de Lucía's song for you, 'Entre Dos Aguas' (Between Two Waters):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oyh...

The title is referring to the fact that he was born in Cádiz, between the Atlantic Ocean & Mediterranean Sea Waters. If I had to choose a song to represent Andalucía, my homeland, I would choose this one for sure.

Feb-28-09  meloncio: <Would you mind maybe posting a few more clips of bands you like, and if there are any who mix flamenco and other traditional music with rock?> What do you think about this modern flamenco version of the Roberta Flack's classic?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwmj...

It's a hit here now!

Mar-27-09  arsen387: hello <Alchemist>, what about a game on QA, or maybe 2 (1 with white and 1 black)? It's been a while since the last (and yet the only) game :)

TheAlchemist: <arsen387> Hi! Sure, I've already started them, if you don't mind
Mar-27-09  arsen387: great, thanks. good luck, then :)
Apr-08-09  arsen387: hello, well done in the first game, I missed mate in one, but my position was hopeless anyway. Have you played previously against 1.e4 b6 openings, I think the line you played is the hardest to meet for blacks, I mean the 11.c4 move. I've met that move only once and then too encountered serious problems. Unfortunately I won that game due to a tactical trick and then forgot to analyze that line :) At least now I'll take a look at it. Maybe you have any suggestions for blacks after 11.c4?

TheAlchemist: <arsen387> Thanks! It was a tough fight. I haven't played against 1...b6 for a really long time, 11.c4 seemed like the most logical continuation at that point, because I didn't want to trade bishops, especially since I was quite certain you'd castle kingside. I think your main mistake was going into the queen sacrifice line, 16...O-O was probably a mistake as well, but it wasn't so easy to prove. I'll post some more comments and suggestions later, when I get home.
Apr-08-09  arsen387: <I think your main mistake was going into the queen sacrifice line> actually I thought I'll get mated otherwise, after 18..Qd7 (or somewhere else) isn't it mate starting with 19.Qg5 or do I miss smth?

TheAlchemist: <arsen387> Yeah, you're right. I guess it would have been better to say that in conjunction with castling it wasn't a good idea (I thought you planned it, or did you miss Bxf6?). Ok, at first glance, how about 16...Nbd7 instead?
Apr-09-09  arsen387: 16..Nbd7 was my first intention too, but then after 17.b3 seems like I was losing at least a pawn. Actually b3 is a big threat (at least so seemed to me :) ) in any line but 16..O-O. I saw Bxf6 and thought that trades gonna favour me but missed the mate threat after 18.Qe3! btw, is there any GM game with the same first 10 or more moves as ours?

TheAlchemist: <arsen387> I wet only briefly through the game with Rybka and the first mistake seems to be 11...dxc4, it was about +0.3 after 10...Ba6 11.c4 Nc6, but after 11...dxc4 it jumped to around +1.2. It further suggests 16.b3 for me instead of 16.Be5 and 16...Nbd7 instead of 16...O-O, which seems to have been the decisive mistake (!).

In this database there are only 3 games up to 7.O-O, where 2 played 7...Be7 (Khalifman vs C Bauer, 2004, G Marcotulli vs K Gawehns, 2002) and one 7...h6 (C Land vs K Chaney, 2005)

Apr-09-09  arsen387: so my 11th move was the start of the disaster, thanks for Rybka suggestion and the posted games.

SwitchingQuylthulg: G Marcotulli vs K Gawehns, 2002 transposes back to <arsen387>'s (more accurate) move order after move 8 and then shows 9.a3 a5, but 9.a3 c4 is also theory.

I think this alternative ...c4 plan works even better after 9.Bf4 since in the resulting position White's natural plan is to push the f-pawn forward and after Bf4 it's obstructed by two pieces rather than just the knight. Therefore I'm inclined to recommend 9...c4 to anyone not actually allergic to closed French positions.

TheAlchemist: <SwitchingQuylthulg> Thanks for your insights! During the game, I was also thinking that c5-c4 might be a possibility, but I suspect <arsen387> didn't want to release the tension yet at that point. I guess either 9...c4 or 10...c4 was an alternative, or simply castling and Nc6, developing, was probably possible as well around that time. Acutally I think you are the right person to ask if <arsen387> has any more questions about the theory of 1...b6, I'm not too familiar with it to be honest.
Apr-09-09  arsen387: thanks <Switch>, 9..c4 in the line played with <Alchemist> looks plausible with the plan of expanding on Qside I guess, but I somewhat doubt about it if white's DSB is developed to d3. Then black pieces are too passive and whites all pieces look to the Kside, though no evident way to convert it. Or maybe c4 implies other plan for blacks than Qside expansion?

<Acutally I think you are the right person to ask if <arsen387> has any more questions about the theory of 1...b6> yes, <Switch> is a master of it, and actually I was repeating his moves from our game with him http://queenalice.com/game.php?id=4..., unfortunately I never even considered c4 in that game :)

Apr-09-09  Travis Bickle: <TheAlchemist> I really appreciate your musical contributions to my forum! As I was adding my musical selections on the forum it dawned on me, we are submitting too many music entires per day. We are going to run out of quality music at this pace LOL. How about if we both enter only 5 music entries per day? Thanks again I enjoy your music! ; )
Apr-10-09  Travis Bickle: <TheAlchemist> Keep in mind you may occasionally get a musical inspiration 3 song set you just have to add!!! LOL
Apr-10-09  Travis Bickle: <TheAlchemist> Professor Im a man with a plan. How about we limit our songs to 5 in the morning and 5 at night? <kurtrichards> had a request for some Jethro Tull and Creedence. I'll supply The CCR if you want to provide some of your Tull favorites. ; P
