  TheAlchemist: <Damn, so close...>

Again.

Sep-21-09  SirChrislov: <TheAlchemist> Yes, the name did sound serbian to my ear and I was right. my last name Cavic, is also of serbian/slavic origin as are most last names ending with 'ic'.

I don't know how I got a slavic last name because my ancestors were Lebanese who settled in Mexico and married mexican women. It could be that there were some slavic roots in the bloodline of those Lebanese thou I wish I knew at what time Lebanese got mixed with Serbians, who began immigrating to the US in 1892, mostly settling in California which is where I live now. I guess once settled in Cali, a few dropped down to the northern Mexican states and stayed there for generations.

anyway, I'm sure you are very proud of your roots and people, as I am.

TheAlchemist: <SirChrislov> Wow, interesting. I have to say I too find it a bit puzzling, have you ever done any more research about that? It seems unlikely Lebanese would have much to do with Serbians, but you can never say. My guess would be that somewhere down the line a female ancestor of yours married a Serbian with that last name, do you think that's possible?

In any case, thank you very much for stopping by.

Sep-22-09  SirChrislov: No, I haven't done any profound reaserch on the subject but it is quite possible and I think most likely that involvement with Serbians did take place at some point. otherwise it would be a made up name and I'm sure its not.

I got a good laugh visiting your "alter ego". very funny stuff. well let me know if you make new discoveries in your laboratory and Hvala lepa to you too.

TheAlchemist: I just dug up this game I made up a long time ago, it was a sort of hobby at the time. I know it's not ethical, but I actually thought of using some of them in case I met one of my friends in tournament games, we would usually draw, so why not make it interesting (in fact, one such occasion presented itself, but because my friend couldn't learn a longer game by heart, we settled for a short line in the Petroff, which ends in a perpetual). Compared to some others it's not so bad, I think:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.O-O Nxe4 6.Re1 d5 7.Bxd5 Qxd5 8.Nc3 Qa5 9.Nxe4 Be7 10.Bg5 f6 11.Nxf6+ gxf6 12.Bxf6 Rf8 13.Bxe7 Nxe7 14.Qxd4 Qb6 15.Qe5 Qf6 16.Qxc7 Bg4 17.Ne5 Qxf2+ 18.Kh1 Be6 19.Qxb7 Rd8 20.Nc6

click for larger view

Qxg2+ (<The saving move>) 21.Kxg2 Rd2+ 22.Re2 (<Forced, or black mates>) Rxe2+ 23.Kg1 Rg8+ 24.Kf1 Bc4 25.b3 Rf8+ 26.Kg1 Rg8+ 27.Kf1 Rf8+ 28.Kg1 Rg8+ 29.Kf1 1/2-1/2

This is another one which isn't too bad:

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c3 d6 4.f4 Nf6 5.Bd3 O-O 6.Nf3 c5 7.Nbd2 cxd4 8.cxd4 Nc6 9.d5 Nb4 10.Bb1 e6 11.Qb3

Qc7 12.Kd1 (<I know, castling would be better, but it's more interesting this way.>) Ng4 13.Re1 Qc5 14.a3

Bd7 15.Qxb4 Nf2+ 16.Ke2 Bb5+ 17.Qxb5 Qxb5+ 18.Kxf2 exd5 19.a4 Qb4 20.exd5 Rfe8 21.Bd3 Rxe1 22.Kxe1 Bxb2 23.Rb1 Qc3 24.Bxb2 Qxd3 25.Bd4 Re8+ 26.Kd1 b6 27.g3 Qe2+ 28.Kc2 Qa6 29.a5 Qxa5 30.Ra1 Qxd5 31.Rxa7 Qb5 32.Rc7 Qa6 33.Kd1 b5 34.g4 b4 35.g5 b3 36.h4 Rb8 37.Bb2 Qa2 38.Kc1 Kf8 39.Rc3 Qa4 40.Rc4 Qa8

(<And here we've "made" time control, black has a Q+2P vs 3 pieces, it should be an advantage, but it's hard to break through. I didn't see it at the time and I still think it's tough if white doesn't make any mistakes. Maybe it might eventually lead to a draw, who knows.>)

I have tons many others, but most are very one-sided, which is too unrealistic.

Oct-07-09  Travis Bickle: That was really a great set you put together on my forum professor! I really like that song about Elvis 'Advertising Space', Black Velvet and Real Good Looking Boy. Here's a clip of The Who working on that track in 2003. Notice Greg Lake on bass for the late John Entwistle and Zak Starkey Ringo's son on drums trying to fill the big shoes of Keith Moon.

TheAlchemist: Ok, a few more songs I forgot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2Wf...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfZc...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57na...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtG2...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz3t...

I'm sure there are many more I forgot, but I think these should be a good start :-)

Oct-14-09  valiant: Hej, tusen tack!

That must be the greatest collection of songs ever put together!

I never suspected that our very popular and classic 'Lyckliga gatan' was an Italian written song (Ragazzo della via Gluck) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE0-...

The song that made the biggest impact on me: Dolcenera

The happiest: Nord sud ovest est

I think my mother will love Massimo Ranieri!

Thanks, a truly fantastic work!

Oct-15-09  Where is my mind: Thanks <Alchemist> I will definitely give it a try, that last game was too complex! I have no luck with the other line,so a new approach should be good.

  TheAlchemist: <valiant>

Glad to help.

<The happiest: Nord sud ovest est >

Funny you should say that, since the lyrics aren't happy at all, it's about a woman leaving and the singer wandering around, searching for her, himself and meaning.

By the way, this is another recent San Remo winner I like and forgot to mention: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGuO...

Oct-31-09  SirChrislov: <Alchemist>
No offense, but you forgot to include a classic (and my favorite) from Eros Ramazzotti: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7NH....
Musica E with Bocelli is also amazing and to me the greatest Italian song of all time.

btw, I have all cd's and dvd's of Laura Pausini in Spanish. her voice raptured me from the beginnig. I've been following her career since day 1 (la solitudine).

thank you for that amazing collection. I t brought back memories.

TheAlchemist: <SirChrislov> Yeah, thanks. He has a lot of great songs, me missing/forgetting a few was bound to happen :-). I willingly omitted many songs (especially by the old guard like De Andre, Battisti, Dalla etc.), since I wanted to cover as many important artists as possible, focusing on more modern songs as <valiant> requested, more songs can also be found on YouTube by doing a search. I don't follow the scene as much anymore, however, I feel it has been declining lately a bit and thus my interest began waning. I'm not really a fan of the Spanish versions, but that's just me, I know it expanded their fanbase a lot.

Btw, this is a classic song I forgot to mention, a couple of verses were censored at the time. The artist was only 30 when he tragically died in 1981. This is the complete version, originally it was divided into 2 parts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8io...
