Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: Chalk up another for Mr. Traxler:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5 5.Nxf7 Bxf2+ 6.Kf1 Qe7 7.Nxh8 d5 8.exd5 Nd4 9.c3 Bg4 10.Qa4+ Nd7 11.Kxf2 Qh4+ 12.Kf1 O-O-O 13.Nf7 Rf8 14.g3 Bh3+ 15.Kg1 Qe4 0-1

I'm not sure of the correct tally, but my losses department is still empty :-)

Dec-12-09  Travis Bickle: Professor here's a band I found by accident on limewire called The Gathering. This song is called Strange Machines and their playing it live. I have the album version on my forum.

TheAlchemist: The draw for the basketball world championship that will take place in Turkey from August 28 to September 12 has just taken place. These are the 4 groups:

<A> Argentina, Serbia, Australia, Germany, Angola, Jordan

<B> USA, Slovenia, Brazil, Croatia, Iran, Tunisia

<C> Greece, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Russia, China, Ivory Coast

<D> Spain, France, Canada, Lithuania, New Zealand, Lebanon

The first 4 qualify. Groups A, C and D will probably be more interesting in that regard, while B seems pretty straightforward, but we'll see.

TheAlchemist: You gotta love the computer lines sometimes...

I remembered this game I played some time ago. In this final position my opponent's time ran out:

click for larger view

I had just played 31.Rd5-d7

The lines I was looking at were something like 31...Re1+ (31...Rb8, preventing Rxb7, runs into 32.Qxa6+) 32.Ka2 (32.Kb2 Qe2!) Rxg1 33.Rxb7 and if 33...Kxb7 34.Qd7+

However, in the last line, there's the even prettier 33.Qxa6+!! bxa6 34.Nc6! Ra1+ 35.Kb2! Rb1+ 36.Kc3!

click for larger view

In the original position 31...Nd4 is probably the best response (hoping for 32.Bxd4? Qd1+, 32.Rxd4? Rxd4 33.Bxd4 Qd1), but white is still winning after 32.Rxb7 Kxb7 (or 32...Qd1+ 33.Kb2 Kxb7 34.Qd7+ Ka8 35.Qd5+) 33.Qd7+ Ka8 34.Qd5+ Kb8 35.Bxd4 Qd1+ 36.Ka2 Rxd4 37.Nc6+

Dec-19-09  Where is my mind: Good game.Is 25...Nd7 the missing move?
10.a4!? is interesting.I wasn't so sure about 11.f4!? at first, preferring 11.Nd5,but it worked very well.22.Rxf5!and White has a great finish with an unstoppable attack on the king.

All the best to You in the New Year!

Branko.

Jan-01-10  Travis Bickle: <TheAlchemist> Thanks Professor for the fine U2 live peformance in Chicago! Also that was a great symphonic performance as well! Here' a song that U2's New Years Day reminds me of for some reason. Maybe they were being played on the radio at the same time.

Jan-03-10  Where is my mind: Heh,everything looked fine for White in the first diagram.White problaby thought there was going to be an easy win after picking up the 3 pawns... then 22.Qh7 and its all over. The best part about it is you take no great risk.Even if 22.Qh4 is played and the position is still close to equal.
Jan-03-10  Thrajin: Happy New Year (somewhat belated, I know).
Jan-04-10  brankat: Hello Uros,

I just received Your card today. Much appreciated!

You mentioned the Olympics. I'll be watching the games the same way as You. On TV :-)

Jan-08-10  Travis Bickle: Thanks Professor for all the Elvis tunes! It's funny after I read your suggestion for an Elvis tribute I went to work on my playlist and I diddn't see the playlist that you entered on my forum. Luckily I only played 1 song the same as on your list and it's a different performance! ; P
Jan-11-10  Travis Bickle: Professor thanks for the Blackmores Rainbow 2 part song!! Excellent performance agreed!! They really played well live & also a great vocal!
