TheAlchemist: Thank you, you too!

Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

   Oct-28-23 D Lazavik vs Wojtaszek, 2023 (replies)

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

TheAlchemist: <goodevans: Will we have another Milan-based pun tomorrow when its two big football teams face each other in the Champions League Semi-Final? https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl... It's a huge reach, but you could call it even timelier. Unfortunately Slovaks call it ...

TheAlchemist: Amazing, what a finish, what a match. Congratulations, Ding!

Feb-14-06  babakova: Two gold for Sweden today so far :)
Feb-14-06  meloncio: <Cogano> Thanks for your kind words. I know Spanish grammar is hard for English-spoken people (these bloody verbs!) :-D. On the other hand, English phonetics are very hard for Spanish ears.

In my case I'm an English autodidact, because I never studied it at the school; only thanks to the pop-rock music in 70's I began to learn some English, and I'm still go on as you can see. BTW, I studied French at the school, mais j'oublié presque tout.

I hope <El Alquimista> don't care about how I use/abuse his forum for my own interest. :-D

WannaBe: Looking at the medal table of today, U.S. have the won the most gold, with 5, but total medals is tied for 3rd with 7 (Germany also has 7 total medals)

Wonder what does this little statistics mean...

Feb-14-06  Cogano: <meloncio> Glad to hear from you again. I don't know enough about Spanish to comment on the grammar. But I don't think it'll be any worse than English or French! I wish I could say I'm a Spanish autodidact, even though I listen to Spanish music during most of my time (I'm just in love with it!)! But, the words are spoken so quickly & the ends of words are so melded with the beginning of the ones after them that I'm never sure how to separate them into two proper words, hence my uncertainty about the spelling of what I wrote. As for French, though I took it for many years, j'ai j'oublié de plus de mon Francais aussi, par ce que je n'ai jamais eu la chance d'utulizer (I'm not sure about utulizer's spelling, specifically if it ends with er or et, in the standard non-conjugated form!)! But, difficult as Spanish may be, I'm determined to learn it, if I learn nothing else. I'm too in love with that language not to do so! Anyway, take very good care & have a great day. Cheers mate!

cu8sfan: All right! Switzerland beat the Czech Republic in Hockey!

I'm also following the Curling match Switzerland - New Zealand which is 5-5 with NZ having the advantage of the last stone in the 8th end. A friend of mine is playing on the Swiss team.

Feb-16-06  babakova: Sweden got soundly beaten by Russia today, unfortunately. I think Slovakia looks even stronger than the russkijs so... It will be a tough few days...
Feb-16-06  square dance: ovechkin has a goal in each of the first two games. is ovechkin russian for phenom?

cu8sfan: I can't believe Switzerland won gold in the women's skeleton competition...

Olympic organizers never fail to emphasize how the Olympics bring nations together. I disagree. All we do is compare nation charts, during the competition we only root for someone else if there are no hometown guys to root for and we like to boast about how many medals our country has won. Hey! We've got more medals than the Brits! Na-na-na-na-na-na! (-:

tpstar: <women's skeleton> What an odd sport.

<bring nations together> It Takes an Olympic Village ...

Remember when North Korea and South Korea marched in together as "Korea" before? Only the Olympics could do that. =)

cu8sfan: <<women's skeleton> What an odd sport.> Indeed. Calista Flockhart and Nicole Richie should be good at it. (-:

TheAlchemist: A curiosity about Skeleton is that it was held for the first time in the Olympics in St.Moritz in 1928, then again in 1948 (again St. Moritz, no wonder the Swiss are good at it), but because it was so dangerous back then it was canceled as an Olympic sport until it was resurrected in 2002, when the women's competition was also held (for the first time).

cu8sfan: <Switzerland> just got it's second gold medal! Tanja Frieden won the snowboard cross event. Apparently the US' Lindsey Jacobellis was in front by a mile and figured if she was going to win she would do so in style. So she pulled a little trick on the last jump and fell. (-:

cu8sfan: I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!! Here's what NBC has to say: "Lindsey Jacobellis had the gold medal all to herself, and fell with just one jump to go. Sweden's Tanja Frieden won the first women's snowboard cross gold."

TheAlchemist: <cu8sfan> How can they mix those two? Sweden and Switzerland seem pretty "famous" countries to me, but I guess this isn't that far from the truth, it seems: http://www.squarechicken.com/USA_Ma... :-))

TheAlchemist: This is part of the Olympics too:

This Sunday at 10:00 a Norwegian priest will, instead of the regular mass, organize the viewing of the men's 4 X 10 km cross country relay.

Feb-17-06  babakova: I saw Jacobellis fall and I laughed out loud in front of the tv, which is rather rare for me. As for the Sweden Switzerland curling match, Im happy to say the blue and yellow won.

When it comes to the world mixing Sweden and Switzerland up... well... The names resemble eachother and also that whole "staying out of all the wars" thing..

TheAlchemist: Great job by the Swiss. How did they lose against Finland so badly, then? Or did that loss wake them up?
Feb-18-06  babakova: Finland are better than Switzerland, also they play more like a team than Canada and the czechs who have been acting like divas so far.

The teams who have made a positive impression on me so far are: Slovakia, Russia, Switzerland and Finland.
