Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

cu8sfan: <Finland are better than Switzerland> That doesn't matter. We beat the Czech Republic and Canada! What more can you expect from us? The loss to Finland was crushing and I'm sure it woke the team up. And most of the success is due to two of the best goalkeepers - Aebischer and Gerber. I hope Switzerland can advance.

TheAlchemist: <cu8sfan> They have an "easier" job now, with Germany and Italy. Of course, they aren't granted wins, but in this form Switzerland should be able to win both and finish in 2nd or 3rd place.
Feb-19-06  babakova: Im not trying to take anything away from Switzerland, of course it is a great achievement to beat two of the top nations in hockey, but.. They lost to Finland simply cause the fins play the kind of hockey you would expect in a quarter/semi/final. Most of the top nations will begin playing this kind of hockey when the playoffs begin, and then the swiss will have an incredibly tough time.

TheAlchemist: <cu8sfan> I was wondering, some Swiss players seem to be from Canada. I know Switzerland has very rigorous rules about attaining their citizenship. So, are these players at least 1/2 or 1/4 Swiss, so they were given the Swiss citizenship? Because I know of one athlete (whose name currently escapes me) from Cuba, who competes in the long jump (or triple jump, I'm not sure), who has been living in Switzerland for many years and still hasn't received the citizenship.

cu8sfan: <TheAlchemist> Yes, it's not easy to get Swiss citizenship. I think the Canadian players have gotten it due to marriage with Swiss women.

By the way, after the 2:2 draw versus the Germans Switzerland has advanced to the quarterfinals. Hopp Schwiz!

  tpstar: <TheAlchemist> How's Slovenia doing?

I'm also intensely curious about Swederland. ;>D

Is there an updated medal count?

TheAlchemist: <tpstar> So far, we've had many disasters, only a few have justified their "trip" to Torino. Our best result so far is 6th place in the women's 10km cross country, where our best competitor was a bit unlucky with the weather conditions. I hope Slovakia wins the hockey tournament, maybe it will be attributed to us :-D.

I will post the update medal count shortly.

TheAlchemist: A most amazing (and tragic) thing has happened today. In the men's 4X10km cross country relay, the coach of the Czech team listed the wrong man for the competition as the 4th member of the team (who has never raced in a 10km race in big competitions before, he just does the sprint - 1-2km).

The "chosen one" was still sleeping, when the race had started and had only 30 minutes to warm up. The Czechs were in 3rd place after 3 legs, but they ended up in 9th place. This incident cost them the medal and cost the coach his job.

tpstar: <TheAlchemist> That's not a very inspiring Olympic story. Please find a better one for tomorrow. ;>D

TheAlchemist: Ok, how about this one. It happened during the same event (4X10 relay)

The Italian radio commentator was close to a nervous breakdown during the final leg, when the Italians were winning, because he couldn't get on air. Only when the race was over, was he able to communicate the good news. Reason: the national radio was broadcasting the mass held by the Pope Benedict XVI.

Feb-21-06  Cogano: Hello <TheAlchemist> & I sincerely hope this finds you well. I don't know about you or anyone else, but I found your latest olympic story, whatever else it may also be, to be quite hillarious. Thanks much for sharing it. Say have you heard from <meloncio> lately? I hope he's okay & doing well. :) Anyway, take very good care & have a great day.
Cheers mate! :)

tpstar: Next time around, Swederland should just march in under one banner and stop this charade for good. Think about how confused the poor athletes must be, pretending to be two countries and all.

Do you think we'll ever see a combined Europe team enter the Olympics? How about Scandinavia?

cu8sfan: This is getting more and more complicated, now it's also the women's curling team... Swedzerland will play against itself tomorrow to decide who gets the gold medal.

I heard somewhere that down in Swaziland they have one guy at the central post office that does nothing else but sort out mail that should go to Switzerland...

TheAlchemist: Sweden is leading 5:1 against Switzerland. I guess the Swiss won't repeat the Belarus miracle of Salt Lake City. Objectively, it would be a surprise if they placed higher than 8th place now, I guess. Don't lose your hope yet, <cu8sfan>!

TheAlchemist: Finland beat USA 4:3 in a spectacular game. Canada-Russia and Slovakia-Czech Republic still to come. Especially the latter should be a real treat.
Feb-22-06  square dance: especially the latter?!? i realize the implications of a czech-slovak matchup, but canada vs russia in the first round!! do you have any idea how much of an embarrasment it would be for canada to lose in the first round? and russia has been arguably the best team in the tournament since losing its first game to slovakia.
Feb-22-06  babakova: Both Canada and the Czechs have turned in lackluster results, Sweden too for that matter. I think Slovakia vs Czech republic will be the better match tonight though.

TheAlchemist: Well, that was my personal view. It's hard to choose between them, and I realize Canada could go out. But that happens in every quarter final, be it the Olympics or World Championship, there are 7 super strong nations, so it means 3 big clashes in every quarter final, so Canada has been in this situation many times before. Why is this time any different?
