 | | rodchuck: Suddenly I cannot "see" chessviewer any more: instead I get the message ERROR: CHESS VIEWER () IS NOT DEFINED; java is OK, Any suggestions?
Thanks |
|
Jun-18-10
 | | Viewer Deluxe: The message doesn’t look like as if it’s coming from CVD or Java. If you don’t see the chessboard at all then the problem is likely out of CVD’s control. Have you tried selecting another viewer in “Java Viewer:” dropdown? Also you can visit my blog and confirm that CVD (and Java) is still working fine. If the problem persists you should contact CG team. They may have introduced some changes recently which could be related. |
|
| Jul-03-10 | | zarg: Has there been a change in the PGN viewer at <cg.com> in 2010? I had it working on Linux w/firefox, and has now tried to figure out why PGN viewer stopped working (a while back), assuming the problem was on my side. However, I've checked that my installation works for at least 1 other Java app. |
|
| Jul-03-10 | | zarg: Nikolay,
when I use this link
http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2010/... CVD works perfectly, but when using
Carlsen vs Kramnik, 2009
there is no board, as it used to be. BTW, I've documented in my forum, what I did to verify my Java & firefox installation. ... but are running out of ideas now. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: Hi zarg,
Nothing has changed on CVD’s side and/or the way it needs to be configured. If your Java installation works fine with my blog you should be able to bring it back here on CG.com I think, few other people also experienced side effects due to some recent changes on the CG’s side. Maybe if you switch the default viewer temporary to something else and then back to CVD you might make a difference. I have no idea how exactly CG are detecting the mobile platforms they’re targeting but (at least in theory) your browser settings could cause a possible confusion. |
|
| Jul-04-10 | | zarg: Problem solved! Sometimes I miss the most obvious things, didn't notice AdBlock Plus had been activated again. On <cg.com>, CVD need it off for some mysterious reason. That is not needed for your blog, as the CVD viewer show up either way. |

 | | WannaBe: <Viewer Deluxe> I have Vista Home, with IE 8.0, when I try to view games using CVD, I get a security feature blocking the add-on. When I select 'allow' to run the add-on, my browser would block it, because /cvd is an unknown publisher. Do you know how I can solve this problem without changing my security setting level for the browser? If the only way to solve it, is to lower my setting, then I may have to do so. |
|
Jul-08-10
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <WannaBe>, there’re no special security requirements and you shouldn’t lower the level in this case. Java is the only add-on required to run CVD and I assume you have it installed and working properly. The easiest way to test (both Java and CVD) is to visit my blog http://chesstuff.blogspot.com If the problem persists there, then we would know for sure that the issue is CVD related. If not, it could be something specific to the way CG does the integration here. In both cases we’ll be able pin-point and resolve the cause. |

 | | WannaBe: <Viewer Deluxe> When I access the site, I am not able to see any pictures, I get a small white box with the red X in it. This is for Knight Moves, Sharp Chess Tactics and Counter Attack Chess Tactics. |
|
Jul-08-10
 | | Viewer Deluxe: Well, well. That’s usually a sign of missing (or mis-configured) Java. By visiting this page http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2009/... you’re going to know for sure. To cut the chase you may as well just re-install Java. BTW, are you using the 64-bit version of IE8 as opposed to more common 32-bit version? |

 | | WannaBe: If you mean my OS, it is 32, the encryption is, of course, 256. I have Java SDK 6 with JRE 6_20 update installed, this just started happening today. Also, as a side note, I always have my java console pop up when java is activated, I do not see this now. I was programming just now with Eclipse earlier, and was able to compile, debug, and jar my work. I was experimenting with awt.Desktop packages. So, I do not believe this is Java related, but if you think it is, of course, I will reinstall my stuff, because I have not changed any configurations at all. |
|
Jul-09-10
 | | Viewer Deluxe: If the console is not coming up (where it should) so isn’t Java. Strictly speaking that’s just the plug-in’s fault but I’m sure you already know that. Sometimes the plug-in’s configuration might get corrupted or otherwise messed up. It won’t hurt if you clean up your Java cache and/or do a hard refresh in your browser (Ctrl-F5). How does LiveConnect page work? If you’re not getting that tiny applet you should plan for a plug-in re-installation. You made me curious and if this keeps happening I should try JRE 6_20 myself. Hopefully we can get a feedback from somebody else. |
|
Jul-09-10
 | | WannaBe: Thank you, by visiting the liveconnect page, I was able to fix the problem. Somehow, after installing Java 2 1.4.2 everything is OK again. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <Viewer Deluxe: Hi <SwitchingQuylthulg>, It’s possible that you might be just kidding but, if not, I bet one of us is missing something so let me explain first. Pretty much every live relays out there shows the basic clock information, ie overall time left. I’m talking about special info about the time spent (per move) by a player before making a move. I call it a <pondering time> and my relays shows it on every game in progress (select the latest move or press END). Please, check it out during the next round! You made me curious and I double checked with FICS. I failed to find any similar feature in their relays and only the overall time left was available. Am I missing something? Also, I’m not a ICC subscriber to their paid service so I can’t testify. I’d highly appreciate if you can confirm (or deny) your claim about their software. From what I’ve known so far they also lack such feature.> I can definitely confirm FICS records (and shows live) the time taken for individual moves in relayed games. Your numbers may be somewhat more accurate (FICS numbers are usually only accurate to within a minute or so, the normal update speed of their automatic relay) but they definitely have this feature. It may not show up with all interfaces, though; if you use a real FICS interface like BabasChess, this information will be viewable. For example, the FICS version of time Kramnik spent on 12...Nxe5 was 21:35.4. (This specific bit of info is now lost outside my memory as the relay was interrupted and restarted from scratch, when copying such information isn't possible, but similar numbers can still be seen for moves made after the restart, and for yesterday's games which were relayed smoothly.) I'm not an ICC subscriber either, but I know they have it for normal games and in most other respects they're identical to FICS (the two do have a common origin, after all), so I'm pretty sure they have it too. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: Thanks <SwitchingQuylthulg>, now I can see what you mean and I’m extra curious. The funny part is that I also used BabasChess but, obviously, I’m missing some FICS settings/commands. I connected as a guest account and I then issued “tell relay observe 30” command. Would you help me setting this up? Is it a parameter inside BabasChess or a command that is sent to FICS? So far I never had a chance to compare the way that feature worked with anybody else. Trust me, there’s a whole list of small problems to be resolved until pondering times start getting close to accurate or even make sense. In fact, the clock information is so badly affected by the delays over the Net that only an ongoing refresh can help improve it. Thanks in advance. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: You have to have "show last move" enabled. You can access this setting through Preferences/Board/Board window/Board window display options. |
|
Jul-17-10
 | | Viewer Deluxe: I got it, <SwitchingQuylthulg>, thanks (once again). I did follow some games today and here is what I found out. Keep in mind that I’m still not very good with FICS and my observations might not be complete. Yes, now I know that they do provide info (per move) about the time spent by players while considering their moves. It looks similar at first sight to what I call “pondering time” but (after a while) I realized that it’s quite different. What they have should better be called “ponderED time” because it’s only available for moves that are in the past (eg already played). I failed to find that same info about the next move (ie the one that’s being considered now). In my relays, that’s the piece of data that I refer to as “pondering time” – the time elapsed since the latest move was played. Also, note that the info is dynamic – it changes while we wait for the next move. In FICS’s relays the info is static – it never changes because it only applies to previous moves. Sure, one may try to get an estimate by comparing the clock info on player’s previous move to the current clock read outs but (come on) I don’t think many people will be excited doing it. Why are we using software if it isn’t helping us? Needles to say, I like my design better. I feel that in the context of live relays that info is significant and highlights the game progress. For example, if GM Kramnik has already spent more than 10min on a move we know that the position might be critical and we can switch our attention to it. In case of FICS relays we have to wait until he finishes the next move and only then the time spent will be obvious. Please, share your thoughts on this otherwise I will never be sure. |
