| Mar-27-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Dear Viewer Deluxe:
I've been meaning to ask this for a while now: my firewall tells me that the Chess Viewer Deluxe attempts to open a port for accepting INCOMING internet connections. Why would it want to do this? This seems to be a relatively new symptom (a couple of weeks). Of course, I always deny the attempt, and all seems to be working fine. What's the deal here? I am running Safari/OS X, latest version of everything. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: <MostlyAverageJoe>,
The only time CVD initiates a network call is to get the PGN data from the server. The connection is outgoing and the request is a standard HTTP GET. The incoming part of it is the server response delivering the actual PGN data. There is very little difference in the way this is done by CVD compared to the way MyChess is doing it. Here is the bottom line. If you are worried about a possible malicious activity of CVD rest assured there isn’t any. Even more, opening a port and listening for incoming connections (acting as a server) is not at all possible for regular, unsigned applets like CVD. This is part of Sun’s “sand box” security concept. Feel free to check out “Applet Security” http://java.sun.com/sfaq/ |

| May-13-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Bug report. Take a look at this game:
W Heidenfeld vs Kerin, 1973
The viewer deluxe refuses to replay the illegal (third) castling. In a recorded game, the move may be illegal, but it is still valid. Should be shown as recorded. The old viewer behaved correctly in this respect. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: Nice try <MAJ>!
Nope, that’s not a bug. I will be surprised if you can find a commercial chess software that will handle this game the way you suggested. An illegal move cannot become valid because somebody didn’t notice it. Here is an example:Let’s say you’re playing an OTB game and you go to the bathroom. Meanwhile your opponent steals one of your rooks. On your return you miss that important (“hidden”) move and proceed with the game. Luckily in the happy end, justice is served, and you win the game anyway. How would you like a chess viewer to portray this situation? Thanks for your feedback though. Please, see the “Handling illegal moves” entry (from today) in this thread http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpB... where I suggested a good workaround to this and similar cases. |
|
| May-14-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Nice try, <Viewer Deluxe> (somehow I did not think you'd appreciate an acronym here :-) However, this is definitely a bug. A quite commercial Shredder (Deep Shredder 11, if it matters) accepts and replays PGN without problems. FIDE rules only require correction of illegal moves that are noticed during the game. After the game is over, tough. This is supposed to be a viewer, not an enforcer, no? |
|
May-14-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <MostlyAverageJoe>,
Of course, CVD is an enforcer. It implements and closely follows the PGN standard. As we all know having a portable notation turned out to be very important for chess. Claiming PGN compatibility is taken very seriously in CVD.
Another enforcing aspect is to allow only legal moves to be made by the user (drag-and-drop feature). You made me curious about Shredder and I decided to try it. I have no access to Deep Shredder 11 but I’m very familiar with their PGN parser. I just tried the latest Shredder Classic and I’m afraid I have to disappoint you. Not giving you an error message is not the same as replaying the PGN without problems. Pay close attention to the number of moves in the game and the invalid moves that turned into comments (by magic). I’m happy to report that CVD does much better job in error-handling department. If you think your result is different I suggest you attach a snapshot so that we can see it. You are welcome to do it on chessdiscussion.com forums if you like. |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: Few days ago I noticed a game on CG’s forum submitted by <Benzol>. There were some minor problems with the PGN data. chessgames.com chessforum
This is a very common issue which shows a typical difficulty with PGN parsing. Handling errors and invalid data is much harder than most people expect. I dedicated a page to this game trying to illustrate some aspects that aren’t well known. | | Viewer Deluxe: Advanced Java troubleshooting isn't a rocket science but some preparations
are always a good idea. The first step is the java console which covers
most common problems. Here is a short description of "Java Console":
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs... Next step will be turning tracing and logging features. The results will be stored onto your local disk and the exact location depends on your platform. Here is a short description of "Tracing and Logging"
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs... Next step will be to try setting the trace level to higher number (1-5). That way you might catch even deeper
troubles but it gets less suitable for the faint of heart. For Mac users I found this link "Overview of Java for Mac OS X"
http://developer.apple.com/document... |

 | | Viewer Deluxe: A very <important warning> for those who're brave enough to play with trace levels (see above).
When you're done with your tests double check that you turned off both logging and tracing.
Otherwise you will experience fast degrading performance while potentially big
amounts of trace/log data is being written to your local disk in the background.
Once you change the settings you can make sure they will be in effect by
closing all active browser windows.

 | | Viewer Deluxe: I put together a simple test for some quick troubleshooting.
Please, try it if you have problems loading games in CVD or
just want to make sure that your Java installation is working fine. "Platform compatibility quick test (for CVD)"

| Jun-10-08 | | Red October: I was able to play through each and every one of those games, annotations, variations etc, no problems whatsoever |
|
Jun-10-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: Well done, <Red October>. This is good news and means that Mac OS, Safari and CVD can live together peacefully. Of course, such a quick test isn’t the ultimate proof and particular issues (like your own case) might still exist. I do have some more ideas to share that might affect your configuration. First of all. Do you use any firewall or antivirus software? Not always, but some of those can affect your Web experience, so try turning them off. Same applies to any type of proxy that might eventually cache the Web pages. I’m not sure if similar effect can be caused by router software (if you have one) but you may want to eliminate that possibility to be certain for sure. |
|
| Jun-10-08 | | Open Defence: <Nikolai> thanks, I just use a DSL modem so no other proxy configuration, I run Net Barrier but I dont see an option to turn it off |
|
| Jun-22-08 | | Hesam7: Apparently my problem is a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+... |
|
Jun-22-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: Excellent resource, <Hesam7>.
There is more bad news because people are reporting both OpenJDK <and> Sun’s Java 6 JRE problems. It doesn’t seem that FF3 is going to make our life easier. The good news is that some good suggestions are already available. As usual one should take extra care when setting things on Linux but eventually, I’m sure, everything should be back to normal. Please, share your experience and help others who will face the same issue. |
|
| Jun-23-08 | | Hesam7: <VD> for the time being I am using the old viewer. The other good news is that in the next couple of months Sun will make Java completely open source so in the worst case scenario by the next Ubuntu release (Intrepid Ibex, 30th October) everything will be fine. Here is where I got the news for Java: http://developers.slashdot.org/deve... |
|
Jun-24-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <Hesam7>, if a savvy user like you is giving up on the plug-in issues I wonder what the majority of ubuntu fans will do.
The real good news would be if we had a solution in the present. I agree that OpenJDK should have a huge potential of changing the Java world. I’m still curious why the plug-in worked fine with FF2 and stopped working with FF3. |
|
| Jun-26-08 | | Hesam7: <VD> I do not count myself as a savvy user (my image of a savvy user is someone who runs Gentoo or Slackware and hacks into the kernel!). And as you mentioned the problem does not go away when one installs the Sun version I also recreated the symbolic links but it did not work. I think the reason not that many people are complaining is that OpenJDK works for most of the purposes, I can still use the MyChess player for example. Now that I am at it what do you think is the best Chess GUI for Linux? On the engine side Fruit 2.3.1 (UCI) has a Linux edition and is really strong but I have problems with GUIs. |
|
Jul-13-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <Hesam7>, No matter what user classification we use a solution for such a problem should be available very soon. I expect JVM gurus to come up with at least a workaround sooner or later.
Hopefully the plug-in troubles will not involve kernel changes. I don’t recommend relying on a non-compliant partial implementation, for example, where MyChess (only) seems to work. For the record, CVD is not even using latest and greatest JVM features so I suspect many other applets will fail as well. Moreover, unstable environment like that can easily and unexpectedly break in more critical situations. Meeting the full specifications is not only possible but was already done more than once on different platforms. I’m only a sporadic Linux user and I'd better not give you advice on any chess GUIs. |
|
Jul-25-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <Hesam7>, It’s been a while since you first reported about your OpenJDK troubles on Linux.
Is there any good news?
You are not talking about 64-bit Linux, are you? It seems (to me, at least) that 64-bit Java for Linux is not available yet and most people use hybrid 64/32 bit installations. Anyway, keep us posted if you get any working solutions. |
|
| Jul-28-08 | | Hesam7: <VD> I have not done anything since the last time we spoke. I am using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu right now and yes there are always more problems with this version (for example couple of years ago the Flash players did not work on the 64-bit version). |
|
| Jul-29-08 | | Z.Ramsay: Im getting URL Exception on my site, need urgent help! |
|
| Jul-29-08 | | Z.Ramsay: my website is caribchess.net, anyway the thing is down for now, i get it up and running normally, but when i stick in to a cms it gives me the URL exception error message |
|
Jul-29-08
 | | Viewer Deluxe: <Hesam7>, Even the original Sun’s 64-bit JVM doesn’t quite work inside browsers on 64-bit Linux. For example, on this page http://www.java.com/en/download/man... there is a note about 64-bit Linux (and Solaris) that says: <“Please use the 32-bit version for Java applet and Java Web Start support.”> On the other hand, I’m often getting feedback from Linux (Ubuntu, Suse) users using FF 3.0 and all’s well for most of them. I can’t be sure if they use 32-bit or 64-bit OS though. <Z.Ramsay>, What does the URL Exception say? If the path to PGN file is invalid you need to fix it first. When you have your site up send us a link where we can see the problem. |
